I've used both Android phones and iPhones, and prefer iPhones. I can't see spending over $600 on an Android phone.

For a backup line, my Moto G5 plus works fine, and only spent $253 on it. And, except for security updates, it already won't be receiving new OS upgrades.

I also bought an iPhone SE recently for a backup phone, subsidized from ATT, for about $150. An older model than the Moto, and I expect at least 2 more years of OS upgrades.
[doublepost=1551922936][/doublepost]I'm trying to get back to my old pattern of replacing my iPhone every 2 years (which was an easier decision to make when cell phone companies knocked $350 or so off the price in return for a 2 year contract, especially when, if you didn't upgrade, your bill didn't go down anyway).

If something happened with my X, I would probably wait to see what the new models look like this fall. Including whatever replaces the Xr. Since I now have a backup older model iPhone, I would just switch to that phone.

Nope sorry. Judging from the responses on this thread, it seems people would prefer an apple calibrated lcd display, over a cartoonish, uncalibrated oled with high-end specs that display an uncalibrated picture.:p

Really? Tell that to those millions who are using the X/Xs/Xs max. :p
Apple wanted to use OLED for all their phones (but held back because of cost as simple as that). Compared to Samsung which even put OLED screen in their mid-range phones. You can console yourself that LCD in the XR is as good blah blah...but that's just self-consolation.

And stop with the nonsense of OLED not calibrated. Apple gives you only one screen mode (cost saving duh) whereas Galaxy has many screen modes from vivid to natural to color accurate. Plus Apple skimmed on the extra few bucks for hardware to support Always On Display for the premium X/XS/XS max OLED screen.

This is completely false. If you’ve been following anything Apple before they even implemented OLED for the 2017 iPhone X and then for the XS, Samsung was the _only_ supplier that could meet Apples demands to supply the necessary OLED panels for those specific phones. No other supplier was able to do that, it has nothing to do with ‘cost’. To help subside the demand, LG was most recently rumored to start helping supply OLED panels for future iPhones after they passed Quality stringent test.

[Also, If Apple wanted to have a lower cost iPhone, an OLED panel would only raise the cost, hence why the XR has an LCD panel.]

Well, Samsung mid range uses OLED but sells for much less than XR. Cost? Of course, when apple wanted to make 35 cents off every dollar. No valid excuses except greed

How about quality of the screen? You know, OLED does not equal OLED, there's much more to that.

What has happened to these forums? It’s no better than Twitter these days. Is there any need to be so pompous and arrogant towards others just because of their choice of Apple device? Isn’t this meant to be a “community” for Apple users?

The LCD in the XR isn’t a bad display. If there’s people out there enjoying their devices, why be so negative and arrogant towards them? Why the elitist arrogance?

It’s getting more and more noticeable on here, and there’s no need.

> In terms of market value, is the iPhone XR already outdated?

Only if you consider this part of an "edge-to-edge" display

IMO, current Samsung devices look so much nicer with the floating camera.

Millions? Oh hyperbole does reign supreme.

Please stop spreading fud, it was never about cost as it was about volume. With Apple dumping millions into display tech though, the reliance on Samsung will be lessened.

If it makes you feel better to say Samsung put oled screens in mid-tier phones when apple’s lcd panels beat it in trueness and color calibration; go for it.

I have the XR and I'm very happy with it. However the thick bezels and the notch will be much smaller in the next version of phones (Apple or others). Therefore I expect the resale value of the XR to be low. The A12 processor, Battery and the camera are very good and will help keeping the prices a bit up. But in the end people want new designs and when the notch is half the size and the bezels much thinner on all other phones in that price range the resale value will drop.

I came to my XR from a 1080

I don't care 3.5 cacas about new designs. I want a device that does what I want it to, and the XR checks every box for me, and I love the screen and I came over from a 1080 Android. I bought this phone planning to keep it for 5 years if possible regardless of anything new that comes out.

It's not rocket science. Get what you want to. Enjoy what you want to. Grant others the same consideration.

The next 2 years would probably be more enjoyable on the Galaxy. If you are thinking long term, iPhone is better than anything android has ever made.

This is true. Apple does amazing support for older devices if you ask me.

Well, there was the slow down issue.

But now I'm happy lol.

In my opinion, the XS is more outdated than the Xr.

If I would buy a used phone, I would not buy the XS because people will try to charge the maximum amount possible.
I believe the XS has the worst resale value, because the X was a fine phone already.

I actually looked at the iPhone XR in store and honestly forgot the screen wasn't 1080.

It really does look good.

What was more an issue was the clunkiness tbh.

It just seems kind of like a brick. I think it's the thickness tbh.

I would actually prefer the XS Max.

But frankly, I'm happy with my X lol.

If I was buying for someone, I'd prob get them a refurb X at this point or a XS.

Where is the moderation on this forum. Do we need 100's of threads about the same topic?

As an Xr real world user I can tell you one piece of advice which might prevent 100 more threads on the same topic - go to an apple store and try them yourself. I did. Walked in wanting an XS walked out with an Xr. I can afford most things in life so bore off with your affordability arguments. Screen is awesome too.

What he said. Word for word.

The nice thing about this is that we all have choices, and while one person may be happy with one device for particular reasons another may choose a different device because of specific features. I have the iPhone XS and am very happy with it; a friend is equally happy with her iPhone XR. Another friend is delighted with his XS Max. Each of us had our own reasons for choosing the models we did, and no one can say any one of us is "wrong" for our choice.

I gather what you’re saying, but the XS doesn’t have ‘worse’ resale value compared to the X. In terms of the XS and the XR, they’re actually highly comparable to each other in terms of features offered, what you’re really buying with the XS that the XR lacks, is the aesthetics with the stainless bands, the dual camera, OLED panel and 3D Touch, those are the main considerations.

I feel like the XS is like the "lost" iPhone lol. I don't know how to exactly explain that, but it just feels like too similar to the X and now that the X is refurbed on Apple, it is especially feels out of place.

IMO, the update is too minimal. I'd take a 769 refurb on the X than 999 on the XS, but that's just me.

EDIT: Also, IMO, the XR for 749 is a much bigger difference in terms of the phone itself than the XS.

The only REAL appeal for me personally on the XS is that GOOOOLLDDDDD lol looks nice especially with a black leather apple case :D

I wouldn't swap my XR for a XS, reception not as good, battery not as good, screen smaller. Way overpriced imo even second hand sales.

haha Yes, i have thought about going back to a 8 but i got it for such a good price, got it new for $529AUD below retail here, actually did a clean swap $ wise for my 1 year old 8. So its hard to justify.
I don't walk around all day with a phone in my pocket mainly office and car.
Also i am home button free now with a 11" iPad too, i prefer it over TID.

In it's defense it is a bit lighter/smaller than the XS max i had :)

I would do an even swap, iPhone 8 for iPhone XR.

I feel like my X with a case is kind of big but I’ve learned to manage. Don’t really put it on my pocket.

I just use a thin light case like the sheath and a Mujjo leather, i do have a OB Moderne i like but makes it very wide.
The sides of the XR are less slippery than the X/XS series. It's a nice phone to hold with no case.

The same could be said for the 7 relative to the 6s. In fact the 7 was debatably inferior due to the loss of the headphone jack.

The problem Apple faces, as well as all mobile device makers have, is that phone upgrades are relatively minimal at this point. The phone is a mature device.

That said Samsung seems to have hit a home run with the S10 showing that the potential is still there. Hopefully apple responds in kind beyond just an iterative update.
