The same could be said for the 7 relative to the 6s. In fact the 7 was debatably inferior due to the loss of the headphone jack.

The problem Apple faces, as well as all mobile device makers have, is that phone upgrades are relatively minimal at this point. The phone is a mature device.

That said Samsung seems to have hit a home run with the S10 showing that the potential is still there. Hopefully apple responds in kind beyond just an iterative update.

Yes I agree!!!!!!!!

The s10 honestly is a true upgrade. and it does show there is potential for real improvement in the market.

In apple's defense, the iPhone X imo was that real upgrade for apple

There’s nothing inferior about the transition from the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 7, the deleted headphone jack was merely a move Apple made early in this Bluetooth era that we moved into. For the majority, I doubt they cared that the Jack was moved, because Bluetooth was already in use as it was. And the counter argument, Apple Still provided the adapter at the time where someone could still use their wired headphones if they needed to.

Regardless, the iPhone 7 was a significant update over the iPhone 6s in every way, with a water resistance, stereo speakers and the dual camera for the Plus version.

That’s the problem with every smart phone manufacturer is facing right now, it’s not just Apple. Also, it’s due to inflated prices with these phones that are also cost prohibitive from consumers wanting to upgrade, and with the performance of iOS 12 sustaining older model iPhones, has also provoked consumers retaining their older iPhones because they have a stronger performance.

That said Samsung seems to have hit a home run with the S10 showing that the potential is still there. Hopefully apple responds in kind beyond just an iterative update.

Yes, the S10 is a nice device, and it’s expected that Apple will also debut their triple lens camera this fall, which seemingly, Apple has had a transition of only really being incremental with their updates with iPhones on annual basis, I really don’t think that smart for manufacturers need to release ‘groundbreaking’ features every single year.

I know it's off-topic, but I cannot understand why anyone is using BT to listen to music.
Even a $79 headphone with cables is better than a $400 BT headphone.
The batteries are way too small to drive any speaker, as thin as it might be.

XR is garbage. Get a proper phone like S10 or Mate 20.

What do you think about the S 10e?

I’ve been looking at reviews on YouTube and honestly I think is my favorite phone on the market right now. I use the iPhone X and I love it and I’m not planning on changing rn but Samsung is doing a good job right now with smart phones

how so, same shape same curved screen, just a few more features

I don’t really like the curved screen to be honest. But I really like the S 10e.

convenience. i can't understand why people would want to work out with cords attached to their phone.

Why? I do all the time, I charge my phone proactively and use my phone at the same time when multitasking. Also, when I did own the iPhone 6s when it included the 3.5 mm Jack, I also used my wired headphones _and_ charged simultaneously.

You charge and use wired headphones while you work out? would like to see that.

It wasn’t really that difficult, I would benchpress, set the phone next to me, use my wired earphones and charge the phone near the outlet. I mean, it’s not necessarily a feasible solution for every situation in the gym, but it does work depending what you’re doing.

Just bring a battery canister or pack with you in your workout things, no need to plug it in to the brick charger.

Do you feel like the XR is a bit clunky? Hard to explain, but it just feels like a brick sort of IMO

It’s thicker, absolutely. But with that battery life, I don’t care. The obsession with thinnest phone needs to end.

Such a fascinating thread, but at the end of the day folks we’re all Apple and iPhone users. We’re on the same “team” folks!

The one common trend that I see some XS owners bring up to belittle the XR and those who use it, are the bezels being dramatically thinner than the XR, but I think these folk are a little bit guilty of hyperbole.

Yes, they ARE thinner ... but not as dramatically so. Even the official gallery images from the Apple Store app clearly shows this (see above). XR has bezels, so does XS. Look at where the screen edges are and where the aluminium/steel bands start. There’s “large” bezels on both devices, XS are a little thinner but not by the margins you’d think listening to some.

End of the day ALL these devices are fantastic to have in your pocket.

Really? Tell that to those millions who are using the X/Xs/Xs max. :p
Apple wanted to use OLED for all their phones (but held back because of cost as simple as that). Compared to Samsung which even put OLED screen in their mid-range phones. You can console yourself that LCD in the XR is as good blah blah...but that's just self-consolation.

And stop with the nonsense of OLED not calibrated. Apple gives you only one screen mode (cost saving duh) whereas Galaxy has many screen modes from vivid to natural to color accurate. Plus Apple skimmed on the extra few bucks for hardware to support Always On Display for the premium X/XS/XS max OLED screen.
I think you need to come to terms with the fact not everybody buys a phone with the same obsessive criteria that you insist on. You seem generally annoyed and dismissive that anybody can be happy with an LCD screen and accuse them of being liars because it doesn’t fit your own narrative?

We’ve been members of MR for a similar amount of time and you’ve never liked Apple for anything they’ve done and have promoted your anti Apple bias the entire time. If it’s not mistruths about iCloud hacking it’s squabbling over insignificant component differences and leaving juvenile one liners. You clearly get something out of it but it’s tiresome to many here I’m sure.

That's why I have the black XR. You notice the bezels much less...

It's a great phone. I am 50/50 on switching from my XS Max to my S10e permanently. The S10e feels like a XS anyways because it has a great display, nice cameras, fantastic performance. I don't like the facial detection or the FP sensor on the S10e compared to FaceID though.

I just picked up the XR today and I don’t feel like it’s outdated. The camera is fantastic. I don’t need anymore with the one exception that I can’t use portrait mode on my cat. Otherwise it’s the newest chip and battery life is top of the line.

I think that the S10 being the newest thing entices people a bit more than a normal S model. For me, the S10 is the model I think that would've been right for me rather than the S10e. But economically, I spent such a fraction of the price on the iPhone XS Max that it doesn't make sense to sell that to get the S10 to pay more out of pocket for a phone and another smart watch.

I feel the same way about my XR got it for such a steal $529 below retail, to sell it and a Xs or Xs max i would be outlaying another $850-1,000 here, not worth it no matter how good they are. Still a iPhone.
Even a S10 + would be another $700.
