we could use discord? i can run the web version of discord on my G5. :)

We could also use Slack, since that has IRC and web support. You can use Adium or quiloquy for IRC support. But yeah, somehow we need to get a group chat going...

iMessage would be my pick, although that does run on iOS... unless anyone out there uses Android lol

My G5 is almost ready, I need to install Leopard in the morning and set up some programs.
ld have to agree with the idea of iMessage as well. What programs will you be installing? All I currenly have installed on my iBook G4 is TenFourFox 45 and Office.

I'm all for iMessage... but that may be a problem for those who have android phones or no smart phone. However, with iChat and AIM, it's literally available on every single PPC Mac. If AIM doesn't want to play ball, Jabber or Google Talk are also viable options. Frankly, I think either AIM or google talk being that it can be accessed online, on phone/tablet, and on PowerPC

I have TFF, iWork and iLife 09, Office 2008, TenFourBird (ThunderBird for PPC), VLC, CorePlayer, Spotify, couple of games...

TenFourFox, Photoshop CS4, Spotify, and Office 2008. I'm sure I'll install more as I go through the week! Maybe Dropbox since I use iCloud drive quite often!

For my iBook I'll buy a SSD tomorrow, I can't stand slow hard drive speeds but that will have the same programs installed.

I can confirm that Google Talk/hangouts will work on iChat... I think that is our best option. So in that case, everyone PM me your Google emails and I'll add you. To sign into google talk on iChat, go to iChat>Preferences. Then go to accounts and hit the plus. Where it says the account type, open the drop down menu and select Google Talk. Sign in with your google account (remember if you have 2-step enabled, you will need to make an Application-specific password since iChat doesn't support Google's fancy new 2-step authentication ;) ) and then you'll be on your way. To chat with someone, all you have to do is hit the plus on the buddy list, type in their gmail, as well as their name, click add, and then send them a message. The messages will show up on Google Hangouts, which is accessible via app or online.

Officially starting my challenge, I wanted USB 2 Firewire 800, Wifi and a better GPU for leopard before starting this, but its 11:59 PM 2016 Pacific Time and I'll just install them as they show up.

Pre-Concerns
Lack of Intel Apps
Steam
A Secure TS3
Itunes Music Subscription
Certain Powerpc apps not working
Mactubes

Overall this MDD windtunnel is living up to its name of being much louder than my Mac Pro thus far

Happy NewYear everybody.

Day 1 started on the 12" PB G4 1,5Ghz.
Browsing this forum using Webkit, checking Youtube with the ClicktoPlugin.
ShowRSS and Automatic 2 delivered uTorrent the first episode of Homeland Season 6 which I will watch later using Coreplayer.

Further I wil complete my install of UnetLab using Terminal (SSH) and Fugu on the Xserve I bought earlier this week and which has Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS running , still need to figure out ipmitool to configure the L(ights)O(ut)M(anagement).

Toying around with Qemu to get a PanOS VM running.

Yeah, Happy New Year everybody too!
Though there's a lot of stuff to do next week which requires my intel-machines and win-server-connection I'd like to be on board too.
My "Books" (PBG4-12", PBG4-15"1.67DLSD) are allready maxed out for my purpose, since they've been on regular use during the last year: webkit, TFF, TFFB, Office'04'/08, Handbrake, iMovieHD-5, CorePlayer, DEVONthinkOfficePro with OCR, iTunes, PDFPenPro/Skim, SohoOrganzier (for iCloud-Synd) and Soho-Notes for iPhoneSync, MacJournal for iPhoneSync, VirtualPC7 with Win2kPro and WinXPpro, iPhoto, TeamViewer7, alternative Booting into Tiger with Classic, Mail, webDAV etc.
The Cloud wasn't existent in 2009 the way it is now. There were no iOS devices beyond iPhone 3GS.
So any new iOS device acts for me like a modem to modern cloud-computing now and isn't excluded from my personal PPC-challenge, which means, all the stuff, that can be provided to my PPC through my iPhone6 is part of my contest.
That is primarily access to ALL Cloud-stored files through iFiles, including moving them between Cloud and PPC via iPhone. Nothing more and PPC is fully back again.

Four weeks ago I've booted up my G4-MDD the first time, soon later got an additional PCI-video-card for 10$ and was really amazed about the option to run 4 monitors simultaneously. Made a video of a 2-monitor session. Great experience.
Today I started to move that video from iPhone to PPC via iFiles. Took really a long time.
Since specs of that iPhone-video are overk-k-k-k-kill for my PowerBookG4 I downsized the video to 480x.. with Handbrake. Took a nasty long time too!
Then I sent the movie to myself via WhatsApp (which includes downsizing) and sent the downsized video to my PowerBook via iFiles again. That process took only a fraction of time which was needed the other way before. And the result/resolution is much better and file-size reduced from 170MB (original) to 16MB (Handbrake) and 14MB (WhatsApp).
I owe an old DV-Camcorder and a there's a big bunch of DV-cassettes (all the family-history of the late 90s), which I'm going to import via FireWire and iMovie to my 15"Powerbook. The PowerBook is really running at it's limit for that task - but that's authentic.
But dealing with high-res video from any new divice (iPhone/GoPro etc.) is overkill and requires other means (BTW: my current iPhone-videos even can't be displayed): i.e. downsize those videos to something, that can be handled with a PPC by whatever mean.
So using e.g. WhatsApp for this purpose is the easiest way. Surely there are other ways, but only effective, if done on the phone previous to file-transfer.
Now, here's the video. Plays nice within webkit and ClickToPlugin/HTML5-360p even on the 12"PB-G4 with 1.5GHz.
Another easy way to play downloaded videos is with preview through the spacebar - no clutter, fast access ...
Cheers

PS (@durika175): yes, good you've mentioned that! G4FanControl is also basic, to run the PB-G4 with mSATA-SSD (otherwise the fan is going to freak out...)

I should come around here more often, I had no idea anything like this as going on  I'll put away my HP notebook and join in, using the machines listed in my signature. ^_^

my G5 Doesn't want to play ball today with youtube at all. it won't load the hml5 player anymore in TFF

EDIT: had to boot up my MacBook Pro to watch youtube. gezz

Was away all day today so didn't get to use a computer at all. So I guess tomorrow will be my first day using ppc machines. I'll arrange to join a chat when I get up tomorrow. I see a few are having some issues. I'll give my 2 cents tomorrow night once I've had a full day of use.

i fell trapped but not as trapped as i would have felt just using my G4. well i'm glad i have my G5 :)

i noted that i can edit if i wanted to on the G5. i have imovie HD on it. faceplam

I couldn't last a day without using my Intel mac for video editing gaming and other modern tasks. I appreciate what the MDD is still capable of but I felt really trapped.
This challenge has been hard on me as well, considering I'm adjusted to using a modern 5K iMac and 2010 12-core Mac Pro on a daily basis. I couldn't imagine trying to use an MDD instead.

There are however video editing solutions for PowerPC. I've been trying to get iMovie '09 installed on the Quad, but don't have a retail iLife '09 disk, only the restore disk for a 2010 Intel iMac. I've gotten it to install, but on launch no windows appear and everything in the menus are grayed out. If I can't get this working soon, I too may fail the challenge.

So far so good though. I've only needed the 2010 Mac Pro as a file server, nothing more.

i don't have iLife 09' but i have iLife 06' and it works fine for me :)

i think i might know why your imovie 9 is not working. it might be that your restoring from a Intel machine not a PPC one. i could be wrong.
