'Incredible' Response to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as Apple Sets Overnight Pre-Order Sales Record

I'm pretty sure this time around Apple filled the pipeline for the 6 with a LOT more units than when they rolled out the 5S to avoid what happened in that case. The 6 plus is a completely new model so they have no past record to go on for demand - it seems they may have underestimated a little.

...and the numbers are somehow irrelevant this time around!

Many people (myself included) were ordering both models in order (pun intended) to figure out which one to keep.

You can definitely divide whatever number they're gonna come up with by 2

I would guess about .1 percent of people ordered 2 with the intent of returning one.

Since I was one of the people f---ed by Apple early this morning, do you think ATT stores will have extras to sell on hand if I show up early?

I have to believe this is a dagger to the heart of Samsung.

The only true merit of the Samsung devices has been it's larger screen sizes.
(I'm not arguing the merits of iOS vs Android). That's gone.

Apple's market share of the high end segment has consistently been greater than Samsung and now its lead will expand.

Samsung can make their childish commercials but it won't help them.

Lol, they didn't "force" you to join. You chose to join.

Att didn't force you; you elected to move to Next in exchange for getting the phone next week instead of next month. If you wait until next month you can keep your existing contract.

What Im saying is there was no 2 year option like previous years. I understand they did FORCE us to do anything, but usually 20 months in we can upgrade, is that option completely gone at this point? I will just cancel the pre order

Well, there is one thing that is consistent in my life. I can predict with accuracy the one day of the year, each year , that I will have the most aggravation to deal with.

I know Apple thinks they are faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings but they are inept at the one thing they should be great at. The user experience when it comes to a roll out is so far off the "bad" chart. Every year I think, this year some heads will roll but it never happens.

Somebody please tell the self centered idiots that earth does not revolve around Cupertino, CA. Tying a world wide roll out to midnight their time is built for failure. There staff and customer service people are all home asleep because , after all it is their midnight. The rest of us idiots are up all night trying to do the impossible. Can you tell I got no, ZERO, sleep last night.

I shouldn't have been surprised. It is an annual thing and gets worse with time. :-(

Who knows, maybe on 2016 we will enjoy removable battery ( that comes handy to restart a frozen OS by removing it) flash player, stylus, USB port, and other you know...... super futuristic stuff

You can restart a frozen ios without a removable battery, flash player doesn't ship with new android phones either and support is discontinued for android, styluses(ii?) are available for apple products, and I'm not sure what you mean by usb port, please explain the benefit?

They know this very well, as there is nothing outside of Cupertino. Have you ever noticed that Apple Maps outisde of Cupertino says HIC SUNT DRACONES"?

Why are you blaming Apple? You're the one who made the choice to stay up all night. They didn't have a gun to your head.

I'd love to see anyone on this forum whining about the high load on the Apple Store website build their own network infrastructure that doesn't crash under the demand of 20 million people all hammering refresh repeatedly every 10 seconds.

You don't fully understand the Next plan. If you are on a contract you will not be paying $130. My guess is that you are like me. When they moved me to the shared data plan, they treated me as though I had brought my own phone. I still wasn't eligible to initiate another contract for a year, but I wasn't paying the second year of my phone. Next year if you buy a phone on contract you won't be paying $100 + $15 per phone, it will be considerably more. Back to what you were paying before you moved to shared. I promise you that Next is absolutely cheaper than on contract.

Hey Nunyabinez, could you explain this further using my example? Again, this would be a phone for myself and my spouse.

AT&T 2-year contract on October 21 (when our contract expires); shipping time TBD:
$399 per phone = $798 (it say's I'm eligible for a $399 phone on 10/21)
$130 per month for 2 years = $3,120 (this is Mobile Shared plan; are you saying this will go up if under contract?
TOTAL: $3,918

AT&T Next; ships in 3–4 weeks:

$849 per phone = $1,698 (this is $42.45 per phone per month for 20 months)
$130 per month for 2 years = $3,120 (Mobile Shared)
TOTAL: $4,818

Honestly, if the Next plan will save me money -- or not cost me considerably more -- I'll just pre-order the phone now. Thanks in advance.

Help

So far I'm unsure about my order...

It took me 45 minutes from the 12:01 PT to be able to get through on the Apple Store App, because as we all know, the Apple Website was down :(. I was seriously upset about how many times i refreshed, and was upset I stayed up.

I was able to put my 6+ order in Gold 128 gb, updated on my mom's contract, and of course it didn't allow me to change the shipping address or anything... but once I got to the check out, I couldn't add AppleCare, kept getting "error", then the date showed a October ship date!!! I was like WTF... I'm not waiting till October, so then I chose to "Pick up in Apple Store" because it showed I would be able to pick it up 9/19... but since last night, at almost 3am, after finalizing, I still haven't received an email! I'm concerned I didn't receive an email because my apple ID is a @mac ID, and I remember when I converted to @me address... I don't know if I should stress not getting an email confirmation?

So anyone in the same boat? I can see my order in the order history on the app. And it still states Available to pick up 9/19.

"Problems" doesn't begin to describe the 3 1/2 hour debacle I went through.

The premier site was unresponsive. When it finally got going the link to "Preorder iPhone 6" led to even more issues.

Online chat rep. Could not place orders.

I ended up calling premier representative. Huge language barrier, slow ordering system and representative seemed unfamiliar with process.

Finally got phones ordered. Unfortunately, iPhone 6 plus not shipping until 10/13-10/22.

Guess I'm just unlucky. Honestly, every 2 years when I upgrade, the ordering process gets longer and more difficult.

Don't feel bad; I completed my iP6+ 64GB upgrade with ATT by 12:04am (Logged in and started process early at 11:57pm) and my ship date is the same as yours. 10/13-10/22

I ordered my iPhone 6 Plus on Verizon's website. The order confirmation say it ships by Sept 19 but the order status page says Oct 14!?!?

I had a similar situation except the Verizon site said Oct 10th delivery originally. I just checked a little bit ago and the delivery date changed to Sept 19th on the site. I am cautiously optimistic for a Sept 19th delivery.

Oh, and I had my order in within 30 minutes of preorders starting.

I did get my iPhone 6 plus ordered through ATT at about 1:30 am MST this morning and am stunned to see that the delivery is 10/31-11;11/14! I would have been better off waiting a month after today and walking in a store and buying like I did my 5c. I understand supply and demand but over a month is beyond ridiculous!

I ordered through AT&T at 12:30am and I also have shipping estimates of 10/31-11/11. I am hoping they are still working on coming up with accurate shipping estimates and these are placeholders. I find it difficult to believe they cannot fulfill 12:30am orders until 6-8 weeks after launch!

For the 6 Plus, it may well be constrained supplies. Remember, it uses a completely different screen from the 6, as it has a higher pixel density. Theoretically, Apple can source the 5c, 5s, and 6 screens from the same production line, since the pixel density is the same (they just cut a bigger screen for the 6). But the 6 Plus needs a separate production line altogether.

On a side note, whichever "unreliable" site who leaked the original "iPhone Math" did get it right in the end (it may have been the "iPhone +" in code). I wonder what their current rumors are.

Constrained supply on the 6+ is almost a certainty....we've had parts from the 4.7 for months(?) but just started to see 5.5 parts (appears production is getting going significantly later for it).

Apple probably should have launched the 6+ on Nov 1st or something so they could build stock up.

Attcalc.com; you can see the breakdown.

Your math is wrong. This is for 10GB shared right?

If you get the 2 year contract, you're monthly cost is $180 a month, not $130. Each phone line on a 2 year contract is $40 per month. On NEXT 10GB and above, its $15 per month ($25 per month for the plans with less than 10GB).

$399 per phone = $798 (it say's I'm eligible for a $399 phone on 10/21)
Data = $100 per month = 2 years $2400
Each Phone Line = $40 per month = (for 2) $80 per month = 2 years $1920
TOTAL: $5,118

AT&T Next; ships in 3–4 weeks:

Data = $100 per month = 2 years $2400
Each Phone line = $15 per month = (for 2) $30 per month = 2 years $720
$849 per phone = $1,698 (this is $42.45 per phone per month for 20 months)
TOTAL: $4,818

That’s the trouble. Apple are really coy about sales figures to start. Also I’m pretty sure that they artificially restrict numbers to drive the hysteria.
I actually wonder how many of those sales are people buying more than they need to make sure they get the right one, (I was going to get both sizes in 64GB today), and people buying more to put on eBay, (again, I was going to get both sizes in 64GB today - wish I did actually).

Anyway, I’m sure they still sold very well indeed.

No company on earth would artficially restrict numbers; every single years we hear the same exact thing and it makes no sense every single time. No business does that, ever.

Its not like they can boost the price because of scarcity (the only real reason you would do that).
