'Incredible' Response to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as Apple Sets Overnight Pre-Order Sales Record

I had a similar situation except the Verizon site said Oct 10th delivery originally. I just checked a little bit ago and the delivery date changed to Sept 19th on the site. I am cautiously optimistic for a Sept 19th delivery.

Oh, and I had my order in within 30 minutes of preorders starting.

Boombashi and Patora, is this what you're seeing on your Verizon Order Status page?

"Here is the status of your Pre-Order:
We received your order and it is in process. Expected Ship Date: 09/19/2014"

Or do you have more information?

1. I don't really know how is it possible that each year there is a "record" response for a new iPhone.(?) It could just be a marketing trick.

I've been with Sprint for two decades (or more). I still have a clamshell phone (most folks probably don't even know what I'm talking about). I have never wanted an iPHone but with Apple Pay I may finally break down. So, the new record with each new release, not surprising.

The last new iPhone was one year ago.
This phone is soooo much better.
This phone learned customers' "wants" from Samsung experience.
A lot of folks, like me, who have never owned an iPhone may finally change their minds this year.

Yes, a new record is very likely; not a bit surprising. If one is surprised, one is not paying attention.

Why are you blaming Apple? You're the one who made the choice to stay up all night. They didn't have a gun to your head.

I'd love to see anyone on this forum whining about the high load on the Apple Store website build their own network infrastructure that doesn't crash under the demand of 20 million people all hammering refresh repeatedly every 10 seconds.

Of course I take responsibility for staying up all night. I blame APPLE for the poor experience. It comes from their insistence that everybody come on line at the same time. If you can't build a better system and they haven't then roll the product out at a manageable speed so that your system can function properly.

Somebody please tell the self centered idiots that earth does not revolve around Cupertino, CA. Tying a world wide roll out to midnight their time is built for failure. There staff and customer service people are all home asleep because , after all it is their midnight. The rest of us idiots are up all night trying to do the impossible. Can you tell I got no, ZERO, sleep last night.

I shouldn't have been surprised. It is an annual thing and gets worse with time. :-(

I'm betting they have a team of a hundred on staff all night to handle the multiple servers, db and communications links all over the globe. The problem is that servers are hammered at 1000 times their usual traffic for 12 straight hours. The back-end is dependent also on the servers of all their partners, which may also not be up to snuff. Hard to plan for that no matter how much you try. Looks a lot like a big denial of service blitz ;-).

Still waiting on a date from ATT

I preordered my 64gb 6+ from ATT at around 3:15am EST because I was trying for 15 mins to get the apple site/app to work. I got my first email from ATT that confirms the order but I still haven't received the 2nd email that gives an actual estimate of dates.

I preordered my wife's 64 gb 6 after that and got the 2nd email for a 9/17-9/18 shipment date estimate.

I will attempt to get it in the store instead but if it's supply constraints I doubt that there will be many that aren't spoken for. On the bright side, if my estimated dates end up being in November as least I will be able to check out the new nexus and the Z3 lol.

Last night was a debacle compared to prior launches. It took me two hours to order two phones and the second phone that I ordered right around 2am Pacific has s shipping estimate of Oct.6 compared to a friend that ordered the same phone almost 40 minutes later that has release day delivery. Hopefully Apple can get things sorted out and have a better plan for the next time around.

They're playing with words again... they do this EVERY release.

I'm sure it is selling well, but unlike past released when many of my friends rushed to preorder, this time around, I don't know a single person who is.

Apple ALWAYS abuses the English language to make their products/sales appear stronger than reality. It's time we call them out on it.

The erroneous information of this comparison is off the charts. Someone has to be bluntly ignorant to believe this. The Nexus 5 is so inferior in so many ways that I think I'll just run out of characters on this reply.

Oh?

Please... go on. The Nexus 5 is indeed so inferior that 10K characters wouldn't even be enough to explain the differences?

Wow... are you really that blind by your love for Apple products???

Actually really surprised. I thought people would wait to see how the sizes felt in their hands before making a decision.

Your math is wrong. This is for 10GB shared right?

If you get the 2 year contract, you're monthly cost is $180 a month, not $130. Each phone line on a 2 year contract is $40 per month. On NEXT 10GB and above, its $15 per month ($25 per month for the plans with less than 10GB).

$399 per phone = $798 (it say's I'm eligible for a $399 phone on 10/21)
Data = $100 per month = 2 years $2400
Each Phone Line = $40 per month = (for 2) $80 per month = 2 years $1920
TOTAL: $5,118

AT&T Next; ships in 3–4 weeks:

Data = $100 per month = 2 years $2400
Each Phone line = $15 per month = (for 2) $30 per month = 2 years $720
$849 per phone = $1,698 (this is $42.45 per phone per month for 20 months)
TOTAL: $4,818

THANK YOU! :) This is for 10GB shared data, and your breakdown makes perfect sense. I've gone ahead and ordered the two iPhones (64GB Plus, space gray), which have an estimated delivery of October 13–20.

But I don't understand why I had to place two separate orders, nor why I can't have them delivered to my work address. Regardless, I appreciate the insight of all of you who helped me figure out the costs of Next vs. contract.

It's extremely accurate, it's just moot considering that almost every phone on the market has it and/or has had it.

Apple getting some of those features built in just now with the iPhone 6 is is neither good nor bad. Many of the features were available via apps, and some of the others don't really matter to most people.

So while the Nexus 5 may have had them all built in, it wasn't necessarily something that held the iPhone back or pushed the Nexus 5 forward.

You can restart a frozen ios without a removable battery, flash player doesn't ship with new android phones either and support is discontinued for android, styluses(ii?) are available for apple products, and I'm not sure what you mean by usb port, please explain the benefit?

Does anyone ever get sarcasm around here?

Supplies for the plus were tighter.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was 10:1 of 4.7 to 5.5. It definitely looked like it. The 4.7 was still showing delivery on the launch date this afternoon and the 5.5 slipped after 30 mins of the pre-order start even with the main site down.

Was anyone expecting otherwise?

I'm glad that the iPhone 6 availabilities are still good. I don't know if that is because Apple planned and manufactured more of the iPhone 6 models or if the Plus is really that much more popular. I can honestly say that I don't see THAT many 5"+ phones in day to day use. A lot of 4.5" to 5.1"

Maybe I won't have to wait 7 weeks to be my 4.7" :D

I see a lot of 5"+ phones, or atleast they appear over 5" because they are massive compared to my iPhone 4. Hell, I just saw the Samsung Galaxy Mega the other day at my kids kindergarten class. That thing is massive.

I've been waiting for the iphone to grown into the 5"+ area. I ordered it at 4:35am this morning.

I'm sure your friends reflect the entire market and the sales will suck this time around.

Maybe their sales aren't as good as they're making out to be but if anything Apple is usually cautious with their comments. I wouldn't be surprised if, once again, they sell even more than last year's launch.

I wonder if Apple WAY underestimated what the sales of the 6 Plus would be. It seems like there are quite a few iPhone 6's that can still be delivered on 09/19 while the rest are 7-10 days. ALL of the 6 Plus wait times are 3-4 weeks.

Either way, great job Apple! I'm confident this is going to take a huge portion of Android's market share back to iOS.

What Im saying is there was no 2 year option like previous years. I understand they did FORCE us to do anything, but usually 20 months in we can upgrade, is that option completely gone at this point? I will just cancel the pre order

No, it's 24 full months now. The 20 month was abandoned just before Next was introduced. My contract is up on Monday & I was allowed to renew for 2 years with existing plan (unlimited data) and price $40 for voice+$30 for data. If you wait until you are at exactly 24 mo. U can do 2 years again too.

I think they did. Although I'm still a little surprised that in the UK, for reserve, there are still lots of iPhone 6 models available!

...and the numbers are somehow irrelevant this time around!

Many people (myself included) were ordering both models in order (pun intended) to figure out which one to keep.

You can definitely divide whatever number they're gonna come up with by 2

I'd say assuming that even a decent sized minority of people did that would be way off. Most I have talked to knew what model they wanted and that is what they went for. Not that others didn't do that, but to assume it would be anywhere near enough to make a big impact on actual sales I would say is likely way off, simply based off the price of the phones and people needing to provide that money up front.

Another thing people need to take into consideration with sales numbers and comparing them to someone like Samsung is that these phones launched in 10 countries as opposed to many phone makers that release theirs in 100+ at initial release. For example the Galaxy S5 was released in 150 countries at once.

That's all that shows right now.

Last year the 5C and 5S were available for sale on different days, thus their sales in a single 24 hour period were not combined. This year sales of the 6 and 6 plus occurred on the same day. The comparison to last year for a single day of sales is accordingly not valid. This is the first year two models were made available on the same day. Still, I expect the combined 6 and 6 plus sales to set a record. I also expect the $99 5S to do much metter than lat year's $99 5C (over the entire year).
