Can’t believe Apple apologists are defending Lightning port’s USB 2.0 speeds. Every day it’s a new low for them. Well you guys apologise as much as you want for Tim Apple, lightning iTurdy port is on it’s way out and Apple needs to be bullied by governments worldwide to drop the port as fast as 2023 actually.
The USB 2.0 speeds are indefensible but have nothing to do with the lightning connector. That is the USB controller that Apple decided to use. Apple was able to ship an iPad Pro that supported USB 3.0 over lightning. So, it's not the port that is the bottleneck, though, I believe most of the charging/data cables are still only wired for USB 2.0.

I am from India so allow me to weigh in. The current government is completely useless and they have done nothing worthwhile in their entire 8 years of rule, so don't expect them to go through with anything serious. The only thing they managed so far is that year old models are manufactured here so we don't have to pay exorbitant taxes on at least slightly older iPhones, that's primarily a reason why I'm rocking an iPhone 12 and not 13.

I charge wirelessly so often I don't know the last time I had to plug one in, but it would be cool if we could have one charging standard. Finding the right cord is a pain.

I understand your point.

But what if two better ports or standards come along? Having reached (or nearly so) the apparent USB-C nirvana, do we allow everything to fall apart again? Or do governments stand up and demand that companies speak to each other and come up agree USB-D or whatever?

If we have a physical connection standard, we can discuss/argue how it is managed. And allow all sorts of incremental improvements.

(I think micro-USB and mini-USB were awful. Especially when you had to plug devices into two sockets to get enough power. Surely no-one would have prevented moving on from them? I think everyone would have realised that they were just interim stepping stone standards.)
We let it “fall apart” because it is impossible to know what great ideas will come and having a standard connector is low on the average persons priorities while innovation is high.

They almost standardized micro USB. Govt agencies always favor status que and political pressure. How long would we be waiting for USBC if the govt had to be involved in the new standard.

The govt is so bad at managing standard that it is pure faith with almost no evidence to trust them with this. Almost all standard they establish languish and die and people work around them because it easier than lobbying the govt. And who do you lobby? The whole idea just relies on a fantasy utopia while we see that businesses rapidly adopt new technologies and distribute them. So we have a proven winner and a proven failure and people are choosing the failure because they are having a tantrum about one vendor.

They will just ask you to negotiate with I’m the industry. The law is just pointing to the USB consortium. So if they update their standard to usb D then it changes in he law.
So if my tiny business has a disruptive technology I need to go ask my competitors Apple and Intel for permission. That will be great! Maybe Tesla should have needed permission from Ford before they made cars.

I would prefer them not to switch. I would have to buy all new chargers.
Actually, you could probably keep the chargers and buy new cables. If you mostly have USB-A to Lightning cables now, then you need USB-A to USB-C that are readily available. There may be some higher charging capabilities via USB-C that you might be missing out on but you'd need a new charger for that anyways.

But I don't want higher charging capabilities.
There is fast charging now for those who wish to.
But throwing away a system that works for another system that works isn't progress.

Since Apple’s hand was already forced by the EU what’s the point of having this article on a Mac news site? If you believe the rumors next years lineup will be all USB-C already due to those regulations and, quite frankly, I’m glad the EU did what it did.

If I have to buy one more lighting to USB-C cable I’m going to scream. Hopefully the delay has been supply chain related and not Apple wanting to sell more expensive, unnecessary accessories like lighting to USB-C cables. I’m betting it’s a little of both.

Apple is already planning this only because these regulations are rolling worldwide since 1-2years, they knew it will come, that’s the only reason they are working on it.
When Lightning was released, they said the last connector (30-pin) had lasted about ten years, and they were designing this (then) new connector (Lightning) to last about ten years. We're coming up on that 10 year milestone now.

Why don’t Apple just pull the trigger and add USB-C to the iPhone 14? The Lightning port is not a selling point, in fact, I won’t buy the iPhone 14 if it has a Lightning port.
Because they can’t milk the special licensing fee for that little chip they put in each connector or whatever it is. Lightning May have had advantages at introduction, but it’s also comes with licensing fees to verify it is “Apple approved”

I have lightning cables I’ve bought directly from Apple store that say “this device is not compatible with iPhone” half the time. So they can’t be keeping it for user experience.

Just do it Apple! Make iPhone 14 with USB-C!
You realize the decision for Lightning or USB-C for the iPhone was locked into place like a year ago, right? Appealing to them to change it now is just absurd. They're a few weeks away from revealing the design, it's gone through all the testing and such already, and they're likely producing at least subassemblies for them now.

I'm glad the governments of the EU and India have solved all real problems that they have time to dictate companies how to building their products. /s

It's (supposed to be) a free world. Let people and companies do as they like. The Lightning port is harming absolutely nobody at this time. Apple has committed to USB-C years ago, way before some other companies (I'm looking at you, notebook manufacturers) - and way before any politician even understood what USB-C means - , and iPhones will eventually follow. No point in forcing it now, and forcing people to replace all of their cables.

Let the market handle this, and the transition will be a lot smoother. Heck, it might even be a transition without a need to replace cables. Oh the irony if this government overreach results in people having to replace all their cables for just a year or two, until we go completely wireless.

I start to think most of the people commenting here really never had a USB C and lived all their lives on lighting and are just parroting around other's fears.

Nope. Used usb c on my work laptop for the last 3 years. If anything more than my apple devices. 2 laptops in a row the port came loose.

I now have another one and am being very delicate with it.

I will give apple credit though. My iPad Air port feels much more solid than the Lenovo laptops.

I don't understand the big deal on this one.

I mean in in the past, before the iPhone, it was terrible. Everyting had black ac adapters and every one was a different voltage with a different plug.

now it's all done through 5 or 10 or 20w USB-A (now USBC) chargers and devices can handle any of them for the most part. And the other end of the plug was USB and now it's USB C. IT's way better. And suddenly the media and governments are overly concerned about this relatively small issue if you can even call it an issue.

I don't see the sky is falling panic here. Worst case you buy a few USB-C to lightning adapters no?

I don't like forcing products to use specific ports. I already think most products go out of their way to use a standard these days. I think Apple even would move to USB-C if they thought it improved the iPhone experience. That's the whole reason they did lightning in the first place. And they've done everything else USB-C. But the phone being smaller and airpods being smaller I think lightning is still their go to port.

Anyway I don't see the big deal over this is because it's such a non concern. Reminds of the quote:

Academic Politics Are So Vicious Because the Stakes Are So Small

You don't need to take advantage of the higher charging capabilities. Most of the time, I don't either with my iPhone. You will, however, need to get new USB-A to USB-C cables that work with the current USB-A charging bricks when you do purchase a USB-C iPhone.

No one cares. Or to rephrase…so few people care that it makes no difference to apple. People on forums are shockingly passionate about it but no one else cares.
Governments all over the world are forcing apples hands just for fun?

What a loads of rubbish. Apple plans to manufacture iPhone 14 at launch in India. This was a news few days back. Just google it. People like you deserve to be kicked out of India tbh. Just keep dissing India and are ignorant of actual progress. Next time, go to r/india and moan there.
Reporting you for personal attacks.
