For those that say it’s overpriced, you haven’t even seen it yet. It may dance...charge 10x faster, and In a 20 ft radius. /s

Do not talk about dancing. Eddy Cue is still fresh in the mind. The things these guys did to compensate for Steve on stage...

$149 for a charger?!?! o_O Hahaha!!!

Overpriced and way late to market.
Exactly, too bad about 10 other manufactures have already ripped off the design and are available for sale now. I'm sure people will still buy this, but I'm assuming that crowd will be the same type of people that buy those Belkin power banks in an Apple store at a +50% markup.

Apple previewed its multi-device AirPower charging mat at its iPhone X event last September, and confirmed that it will be released at some point in 2018, but it has yet to reveal how much it will cost.

According to Chinese website Chongdiantou (via LoveiOS), however, so-called "industry insiders" speculate that the AirPower will be priced around 1,000 Chinese yuan, which is roughly $145 based on the current exchange rate. Rounding, this suggests the AirPower could cost around $149 in the United States.

Chongdiantou is the same source that recently leaked photos of what is claimed to be an engineering prototype of Apple's faster 18-watt USB-C power adapter for 2018 iPhones, but overall, the publication lacks an established track record, so this information should be viewed with some skepticism.

According to the oft-reliable Mark Gurman, Apple aims to release the AirPower by the end of September, so there's a good chance its pricing and availability will be confirmed at Apple's usual September event, alongside a trio of new iPhones, Apple Watch Series 4 models, new AirPods with "Hey Siri" support, and more.

$149 would be pricy for a wireless charging mat, but the AirPower can inductively charge multiple Apple devices at the same time, including the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, and Apple Watch Series 3 models. It will also work with AirPods when placed in an optional wireless charging case, likely available next month.

Chongdiantou also recently claimed that all three iPhones expected to be released in 2018 will feature wireless charging, including an all-new 6.1-inch iPhone, making them all compatible with AirPower.

AirPower's ability to charge multiple devices is achieved with a propriety technology developed by Apple. Apple said it will work to have its technology become part of the universal Qi standard supported by many devices, so there's a good chance we'll see true multi-device mats from other companies eventually.

Of note, the AirPower has yet to be authorized by the FCC, a requirement for sale in the United States, according to Apple's website.

[doublepost=1534184020][/doublepost]Assuming these will just be 7.5w? Can anyone speak to the QI roadmap - does it now/when will it support faster charging? Maybe that is the delay with the release of the Apple power mat and the new 2018 iphones will support a faster wireless charging speed?

For me, wireless charging is nice now but until it can compete with the charging speed of a plug in, fast charging adapter, I am waiting by the sidelines..

From what Apple was saying it's supposed to be able to charge anywhere on the pad. Considering competing devices have a single ring of connectivity and you have to get it in the circle. Or the Ikea one that has three but they have to be perfect. I'm really hoping this is where it really sets it apart from other devices. I'd love to just throw my phone down on it without having to worry about hitting the sweet spot like my other wireless charges.

I like my phone standing upright while charging. Also that mat will be a pain in the ass for anyone with a Milanese Loop band on their Watch.

Same thing with the Velcro sport band as well, because they can’t lay flat and you will have to remove the band in order for it to charge. So valid point on your behalf.

The product will already be obsolete if it is not future proof with the ability to charge at 15watt ala some Android devices... My guess is it will be and '18 or '19 iOS devices will wireless charge at faster speeds...

Supposedly Qi goes upto 120watt power, for laptops and such...

I dunno how it’s late because even though it was delayed, chargers aren’t going anywhere, I would trust this product then the ones on amazon that look cheap

At this point, anyone that really wanted wireless charging already has it. Wireless chargers already existed well before iPhone even started supporting. And everyone is just sitting on their hands waiting for Apple to release theirs? I really doubt it...

obviously only worth getting if you have all 3 devices...considering the apple watch charger is £78 not a surprise if it's £150

What other devices let you place down multiple devices for charging anywhere? I haven’t seen one yet that does what AirPower is supposed to actually do.

Lets see-- that will free up a watch charger and a air pod charger
saves me getting extra chargers for those for the office and car.

tell me my savings ? that internal rate of return always trips me up.

I disagree, I think it's extortionate. But to each their own I suppose…

I understand you don’t agree with the price of the Airpower, but How could a price of a product that is optional for the consumer to purchase be ‘extortionate’? Extortion is through force or threatening. What you’re saying in your above post isn’t applied appropriately.

Hey kids!

Once upon a time, Apple made truly clever products that were several steps ahead of anything the rest of the industry could come close to. They also marketed them fantastically well. Even when unboxing said hardware, you could really feel the attention to detail that had gone into production. They felt 'special'.

Then, 10 years later, Apple invented the iPhone, grew into a multi-billion-dollar (touching on trillion) behemoth on the back of it, with such obscene amounts of cash reserves, they lost sight of their vision along with their visionary leader. From that point on, even those loyal customers affluent (and some said stupid) enough to continue buying their products, were treated with contempt, effectively as unpaid beta testers on substandard products. Flaws and gimmicks were the name of the game, anything to bolster those shares. Meanwhile the extortionate price gouging on accessories continued apace.

Arrogance. Hubris. Greed.

The End.
[doublepost=1534193036][/doublepost]p.s. In the inimitable words of my avatar, for a wired 'wireless' charger that costs 150 notes, Apple can go bite my shiny golden metal ass...

You're being too literal. Extortionate has a definition other than in the legal/criminal sense. It means grossly excessive. He was using the term correctly in the context. Maybe use an online dictionary next time eh.

I guess I will eventually get round to buying one next year when I upgrade my series 2 Apple Watch. For now, my anker wireless charger will simply have to suffice.

Next year is going to be expensive, between this, Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad Pro.

The link in the story for the AirPod airmat charging case takes you to an article with a photo of the case from September 2017…they could have released it earlier for people to use with other chargers in that time. I guess they want to keep it within the ‘ecosystem’.
