The Nexus One's market has opened a little more in the US now. I wonder if it will make a difference?

Most people have this self made block on technology, like it's brain surgery. I don't understand it.

Sounds like you have a self made block in understanding that most people just want technology to work without having to understand it.

Elitist mentality? Why, because I believe people have the brains and the power to learn new technologies that are easy to learn if they just believe they could do it? When people say, "oh that's too complicated", all they are doing is selling up their mindset to fail. We are not asking people to build a spaceship here, just to learn how to use a cell phone, program a VCR, or maybe use a computer to send an email, simple stuff. Most people have this self made block on technology, like it's brain surgery. I don't understand it.

Because you do fail to think outside your monkeysphere. You place relevance on things that others do not. You aren't describing 'new technologies', you're describing mundane tasks that some people may not need to know or even give a **** about.

I prefer to drive cars with manual transmissions. For me to make broad sweeping generalizations saying anyone that uses an automatic is a dumb-ass, would be childish and idiotic. Yet that is what you are doing. Maybe if you grow up a bit, you'll realize that the entire world doesn't have to place importance upon every little thing that you do. Although judging from your outdated usage of the VCR anecdote, I'm guessing you are older than your views would suggest. Which is just rather...sad, in a way.

It's all about momentum

This is the same reason why Microsoft is building stores just like the apple stores. Apple did all the marketing work and spent the money to create a new kind of store and now Microsoft is going to take advantage of the new trend and it's going to look like their stores in the beginning have more success than the Apple stores had. The Droid already took advantage of the smartphone market created by the iPhone. The reason I respect Apple is that they are innovative and take risks with a vision towards the future. The other companies like Google, Microsoft and Palm are just piggy backing, they claim they are improving the smartphone but they are just copying it.

Well, I can agree with that analogy. I cringe driving my automatic. It deserves to downshift and accelerate correctly. I'll feel more more like an adult and a man when I finish converting it.

So microsoft users have a mindset for failure???

Are you trying to play the Windows Vista card again, or is it the Blue Screen of Death card? Windows 7 is out, just in case you did not know, and it's pretty darn good. Just look at it's record breaking sales.

How can you use something if you don't understand how it works? I'm not saying how the circuits boards or the code of the OS work. You must first understand how it works to properly use it. Right?

Lets play a game. Go into any Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, ShopKo...hell, any store you want. Find me a PC without Windows on it. I'd further limit that, but XP is available on some netbooks.

Then try to understand why talking about "record breaking sales" should be taken with a grain of salt.

If people were buying Windows 7 solely at their choice, then you'd have a point. But much like you said earlier, people are losing the ability to think...right? So good 'ol Ruth and Cleetus, walking into Wal-Mart to get that new 'puter with the $199 sticker...they aren't making a conscious choice to get Windows 7.

You -were- the one just saying that people were getting dumber, right? ;)

this is more a reflection of the US mobile market than anything else. not being tied to a carrier will take time for people to get used to.

There is this and the fact that Google's launch partner was T-Mobile, which is nowhere near the size of AT&T and Verizon in the US.

Oh, and also the fact that there's no way to handle the device before buying it, unless you know someone who has one.

Is that the new microsoft motto: "Our OS is now 'pretty darn good'"?

I am starting to think that too. Apple needs to sell iPhones on Verizon as well as AT&T. Multiple carriers is the only way to expand sales.

I can't wait until the iPhone is available on Verizon, and people have no idea that it's gimped right out of the box.

Great news! Contract free, carrier unlocked, you bought your phone it's yours to do what you please with it.

You know, you can do that with an iPhone as well. Buy it for its full price and you don't have to worry about your carrier, unless you want Verizon.

Still, the reason the Nexus One won't sell as well as others is that price, $529 is not cheap for a phone.

"Think my way. Your way is not good enough."

Totally elitist.

So how much is an unlocked iPhone? $600? How many carriers can you choose from? 1(usa)? Maybe it would be smarter to buy it for $99, and then really pay $800 to $1000 for the phone on an overpriced 2 year contract, with bad service?

How much is a contractless, sim free iPhone? Over here the iPhone 3GS is £449 on O2 pay and go (simlocked to o2 too) whereas my Nexus One cost me (at todays rates) £348.57 + £60 UK Duty Tax (BOO!) which works out less than a locked iPhone on a "pay as you go" network.

An unlocked iPhone 3GS on Expansys is a staggering £799.99..... http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=183742
Far more than any phone is worth.

I can get a 32GB iPhone without the two year contract for $499. You can use the iPhone on AT&T or T-Mobile, or any other GSM carrier that might be in the US.

Unfair Comparison

This is an unfair comparison anyway considering when the iPhone came out, smartphones were not as popular as they are today because the iPhone made people actually want them.

Of course the numbers are going to be higher because they are more popular today then when the iPhone came out. Plus all those verizon customers who do not want to switch to AT&T or who can't, they want a smartphone and, as sad as it is to say, googles phone is the next best choice if you ask me.

He's not here for rational discussion, he's here to cause trouble/prove to himself how cool he is.

Technology is only a "struggle" for those who have a mindset for failure.

If it needs a manual it needs simplifying. Everyday tech should be as easy to use and maintain as a toaster. These are appliances, not projects.
