There are many problems with this thing

Too expensive

Too expensive

Too expensive

OK, I repeat myself. $150 for what? A 2-watt system that requires $10 in batteries a week to operate, eats up valuable desk space and makes the scroll wheel hard to use?

A $20 pair of computer speakers with the same audio quality and an electrical plug is a far better buy. The main cable for the speakers plugs right into the headphone jack in the iPod, and the speakers themselves fit neatly in the space around your computer.

Voila!

i can supposedly get a line-in put inot my car, through the dealer... i need to look into that. when i got my iPod i had bought the belkin FM transmitter.... too many FM Stations where i live, i sounded like junk... i'm just frustarted because i really wanted to use my iPod in my car and not have to hassle with CD's anymore.

Then get an RCA line adapter, there are several available on the net i want to get one but I'm going to be switching cars soon so I haven't done it to my current car but I wil with the new one.

Actually the ipod is equipped with a high quality output so going line out to a stereo is no problem and sounds great!

Is this a rumor?

Is this a rumor? I don't want solid facts about released products, man! Give me rumors about unreleased products!

That's it. I won't sleep tonight. Thanks.

True. If Apple had designed this, the same Firewire connection that allowed sync'ing/recharging would also recharge the inMotion.

iPod to stereo cable

It sounds like there are some people who think you need a dock to connect your iPod to a stereo.

I've been connecting my first generation iPod to everything since day 1.

Connecting to external computer speakers has already been mentioned, as has connecting to car via cassette tape (which I use) or radio transmitter (which I don't use).

I also use a 3.5mm to RCA connector to connect to a mixer or directly into an RCA port on a stereo receiver. I do this when at a friend's house.

It's a simple $5.00 cable, available at Fry's, Radio Shack, etc:

the itrip from www.griffintechnology.com or something like that lets you choose which fm station you want to pay it on. but screw those guys. They suck, i preordered it in early july when they said it'd be shipping late july or early august, and i waited. com mid august i got a very confusing email basically saying "they aren't coming yet, and we dont know when they will" then come mid september, no word from them, so i cancelled it. we should all boycott them, because they're worse than even apple.

eh, this is stupid, i went right on and purchased one, because I liked it, and thought it'd be good for here at the store. It went through, estimate ship date is on or before 10/16/2003 what a load of crap. DON'T F'N RELEASE SOMETHING UNLESS YOU HAVE THEM! they were just released online today right? and they already dont have them, that's simply retarded, terrible business, and i dont quite understand why apple and all of these other people do it. i understand to see what kind of interest you have, but come on, atleast have some made, i doubt a ton of people went and bought them for $150. needless to say, i just had them cancell it

That is quite possibly the gayest vehicle ever produced. I'd rather have a ford focus. or hell, even an element before that. but hey, leave it to the french.

The Boombox.

but modular.
keep one in your office
keep one in the garage
keep a dock next to your home stereo
keep your headphones in your backpack
keep a ??? in your car

all you do is take your iPod with you.
nothing bulky

i like this approach

eliminates the cd wallets and ugly radios

edit:i just saw that it costs $149, they can shove it!!

Damn that is funny as hell :D

The link to the press release mentions that it comes with an AC adapter which charges the iPod while powering the system, a point which most here seem to have missed.

Great post! Finally, someone who can read, rather than simply posting inane and hasty comments.

There's nothing wrong with the car at the rate the gas prices are going in the us we should have them already here...

Sole use I can think of for this thing is portability; it appears to fold up into a nice little package for transportation. Easier than carrying PC speakers and a bunch of wires.

For more stationary applications (e.g., office), there are any number of much better solutions.

But the price of this thing is really way out there. Man oh man, what are they thinking?

You can plug it into a stereo?? Your kidding me... <Sarcasm>

I would like to see Bose or Cambridge Soundworks come up with something.

Geez... Someone here is beyond Tone DEAF!!!

Bose  and sound good does NOT, I repeat, does NOT belong In the Same sentence.

regards from a musician and an AUDIOPHILE.

Yay, Maxxbass technology.

Whatever happened to buying real speakers.

And yes, Bose sounds like -TOTAL ****-.

Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they're talking about. Period.

Go into ANY hi-fi store anywhere in the country and ask them how Bose stacks up against ANYTHING that's not sold at Circuit City. 'Tis crap.

$150?!?!

As others mentioned $150, is a crazy price for this 4W piece of plastic. For $150, you can buy a nice set of speakers and maybe even headphones. For $100-200 you could do Monsoon, HK, JBL, Klipsch, etc.

Portability is nice, but just get a set of headphones.

Anyway, I guess if you have money to blow...

umm... except that using rechargable batteries in many electronics will void your warranty. for instance, i think their new mouse is NOT to be used with rechargables. So there's plenty of reason to keep buying disposable.

and yes, it does matter.

as to the thread in general.
too expensive. especially for battery-operated.
ugly. just a few tweaks would have made this appropriate. but they obviously have no sense of proportion whatsoever.

By the way, i think it should be noted that according to them, this is not just for 3rd generation iPods, as the main post suggests:

The inMotion portable audio system supports all iPods. (iPod with Dock connector as well as iPod with FireWire connector)

other options

During the dark times following Hurricane Isabel my iPod was the only thing still running that had an alarm. I picked up some of those little unpowered Sony speakers for 9.99 at BestBuy. With the volume set all the way up MC Frontalot woke me up for 8 days.

I was thinking of getting these for 69.99. Its supposed to last 35 hours on 4 AAAs. Also includes power adapter. It's still 2+2 watts but the price point is a little more in line with a reality I'm familiar with.

...can anyone say "pointless"?

At home, I plug it into my computer and listen.

In the car, I can plug it into the adapter there and channel it through my car speakers, which are much better than these.

When walking around, I can put the headphones in my ears and enjoy my music...Much more discrete than carrying around these speakers.

I'm really confused as to what the target or purpose of these speakers is. Why would you need portable speakers for a portable music device?

And if it were acceptable to walk around on the street listening to music without headphones, this system would still not be portable enough to do so...Unless you were into that whole carry-a-boombox-and-nod-your-head-to-the-beat-annoying-everyone-else thing.

I thought this sounded really cool at first, but then again, it takes me about 2 and a half seconds to actually think about these things.

I think that Bose speakers sound quite nice, and that their "status," which probably contributes to their price more than any other component, is also a plus. Bose is Bose, and those who purchase Bose (not me, I'm a student!) are paid a certain deference.

I may border on presumption by commenting any further. However, although I do not command any real credentials or expertise in the field of music technology, I find it not too unreasonable to forward the idea that Bose or Cambridge might design better quality sound systems than, say, an Altec Lansing 2+2 watt compendium of plastic...

But perhaps that would be debatable. That is, if it weren't for the fact that the entire subject is moot since the concept of a portable sound system for an iPod is completely outlandish. That, I think, is the prevailing opinion of the contributors to this thread, whether they like Bose or Cambridge or Monsoon or Altec Lansing or even the sound of drumming on the pieces of cardboard they call their homes as they pretend to be listening to some sweet beats on a 3rd gen 40 gig iPod.

Not to say that I have anything against the homeless...Because I don't...And in fact, I have a great deal of respect of their dignity and strength in face of adverse situations...So don't flame me...Really...You know it's totally unnecessary.

if this is what i sound like when i go off on PCs, i'll never do it again. i guess it took seeing someone act like a self-righteous prick to point it out to me.

subjective = no one's opinion can be "wrong".
