I did, and ...

"Update: While initial reports had suggested that the issue is limited to desktop versions of the platform, Cougar Point is in fact used in both desktop and mobile chipsets based on Sandy Bridge, indicating that the recall could also delay availability of refreshed Apple notebooks such as MacBook Pros."

It's no problem if you had a Sandy Bridge CPU already. You'l get a replacement when the new version is out.

Good move by Intel. Unlike Nvidia who tried to hide it with their bad GPU series, Intel let everybody know what's wrong and recalls it immediately and will offer a replacement.

$700 million costs is no problem for Intel at all, they got plenty of money.

It's dissapointing, apples long refresh times are annoying frusturating for those who want to upgrade, let along Intel's problems. However, at least Intel recognizes the issue and has already found a fix, set a time table for fixed versions, etc.. Better than saying too bad for the customers. What is interesting to see now is how these shortages of Apple macbook pros / release date for new ones will balance along side with intel issue

Thank you,

I think I will return it.

Now I am not sure if I should buy an imac or mbp now or wait.

The problem really isn't that big. Just use the SATA-600 ports instead of the SATA-300 ports :) You can keep using it that way untill Intel offers a replacement.

I'd probably return it too :p

I'm getting impatient waiting for the refresh. I am sure I am not alone. :)

your not alone, im impatient as well. And I dont want a current model, its already out dated. Having there be a potential mbp delay again does not mean the current ones are magically even better due to the delay. I'll still wait, but really

Look on the bright side, all the 2011 MBP speculation can continue for several more weeks!

+1 :D

Someone should start a new thread! "Should I buy MBP now or wait...aaaaaaeeeeeeiiiiiii [insert horrific sound of OP being consumed by rabid MacRumors regulars)

Not really a bright side, could be more months, not weeks. Last week was the first bright side for mbp with the supplies limited articles, now we get a punch in the gut with this crap. Everything I'm waiting for is getting delayed/ and or all we hear about mostly is "i" devices.

Dont worry, when the sandy bridge macbook pros are finally out you will buy one. And then the next day or two it'll be like it never happened. Might as well just buy now and forget about it!~ :D

What about the computer manufacturers

I am wondering about many of the computer manufacturers. If Sandy Bridge has been designed into 500 different PC's as estimated by an article I read. This could have a crippling effect on many businesses in terms of lost sales not just intel. I know many people here will still wait for a MBP rather than buy now and I assume many people will hold out on PC's as well. This could be a multi billion dollar loss for the industry.

According to Anandtech the two 6Gb/s SATA ports are NOT affected by this issue. So we may only see a small delay on the MBPs. If Apple only uses 2 SATA ports in the MBP, the delay should be minimal, assuming Apple has some of the faulty chipsets in stock to build the MBPs. If Apple uses more than those 2 SATA ports though, we'll see a month long delay just like every other manufacturer.

Anyone know whether the current MBP makes use of a third SATA port?

yeah, more time to save. Nothing bad in that respect, either a refresh asap but have to wait to have more cash would suck too I guess, seeing the product but cant have it. In a way, now being restricted most likely to wait longer forces more saving and a ready to go approach when they come.

however, like apple last year with intels screw up ( pissed at intel:mad:) their decision to not ad core i3 to the 13" mbp, would similar choices be mader here to roll out new models but limit choices. Or, what about AMD chips?

Not sure about the 3rd SATA port for mbp, but a March release isnt the end of the world, frankly no delay is ha, but if it is later than March, that's quite annoying.

Ok, say, for the sake of argument, that Apple doesn't use any other than ports 0 and 1 and they decide to go ahead and produce and sell 3.5 million laptops in the next quarter ... where is Apple going to get the chipsets from, considering Intel has stopped producing the problem chipsets and recalling any already out there, and Intel has just started ramping up production of the corrected chipsets and won't reach full capacity till March at the earliest?

I think those who are using this argument are hoping that the MBPs have already been built.

THIS, friends is why Apple tends to not adopt bleeding edge technology.

People seem to be bitching and whining that Sandy Bridge-based Macs aren't available now. Well guess what, if they were, Apple would have to do a recall! Your hardware would be flakey.

It is to your benefit to not be an early adopter. Once hardware is proven, THEN manufacture millions of them.
And as we know from the iPhone's antenna issues recalls for apple are pretty much the equivelent of steve jobs getting on stage and dropping his underpants in front of everyone. Apple seams to like to have this image that its perfect, even if its not I like it.

Core 2 Duo What Boshes?!

Maybe Apple buying those 4 trillion C2D chips wasn't such a bad idea after all...
Lmao well I guess I can breath easy with my MBP.
Let's kill this infidel.
lol

This theory requires the previous assumption. Just because there was a recall doesn't mean Intel forces Apple to give them back at gunpoint. Especially since Apple's end product wouldn't be effected by the error. Heck, Apple and Intel could strike a deal for Apple to buy faulty chipsets at a discounted price to reduce the amount of money Intel will be losing because of this fiasco.

who knows, sooner the better, but quality of chips better than sooner. more time to save, whatever. I just hope it does not get to, nor surpass the 365 day mark. March would be more reasonable now, apple will just make or send current versions longer and have 3rd parties wait possibly. we all know apple wont sent laptops or imacs with **** chipsets just to be recalled. all in all, by end of march would be great/ news leaks coming in here & there so were not clueless. + make the wait worth while, unlike last refresh
