THIS, friends is why Apple tends to not adopt bleeding edge technology.

People seem to be bitching and whining that Sandy Bridge-based Macs aren't available now. Well guess what, if they were, Apple would have to do a recall! Your hardware would be flakey.

It is to your benefit to not be an early adopter. Once hardware is proven, THEN manufacture millions of them.

My 2008 Macbook Pro had a duff 8600 in it, and that's after millions of users all over the globe had been using them, and it having been on the scene for around a year up to that point.

this is just an unpredictable goof.

This is the question ... if the new MBP has a SSD, does that connect via SATA? HOHOHOHO

omg! omg! omg!

Touche ;)

You guys can call doom and gloom all you want, but this isn't the first time that Intel has issued a significant recall with a paired writeoff to boot, only to announce later that only some OEMs took advantage of it and most customers didn't care. It's a precautionary measure they can afford to take right now.

According to Anand, it's a 5% failure rate over three years... on those ports that Apple likely wouldn't even use... meh.

Though he pins the new release date for MBPs to end of April at best.

What an interesting drama. I used to be involved in this industry, but that was a very long time ago. Now I watch from the sidelines like everyone else.

just saw this from Anandtech

Wait Longer for those MacBook Pros
Have you noticed a lack of dual-core Sandy Bridge based notebooks on the market? Intel wanted to but couldn’t launch every last SNB SKU at the same time, so the dual-core notebooks got pushed out until mid-to-late February. Unfortunately, that was pre-bug. With this latest delay you shouldn’t expect dual-core SNB notebooks until a few weeks after their original launch date, at the earliest.

If we assume fixed chipsets are available in the last week of February, they can be put into systems the first week of March. Then expect at least a week of testing and validation if not more. Add another week to ramp up production and we’re looking at late March or early April for dual-core SNB notebooks. Those of you waiting on Apple’s updated MacBook Pros fall into this category. I’d say April is a safe bet if you’re waiting on an upgrade.

We're ****ed

Intel's Latest Press Release!!!

i hate to be rude, but i am really glad i bough my MBP in December rahter than waited...
OUCH! maybe they will fix this in a month?
good luck to all the MBP Waiters!

EDIT: OH never mind ... i just read "Intel will begin delivering an updated version of the chip to customers in late February. "... its a one month delay, not a huge deal for waiters..

(PS. Does this mean we SHOULD NOT buy sandy bridge computers.. i was going to buy a SB computer for my business, so should i halt on doing that and get first gen i5?)

I teach at a university and some colleagues from the Engineering department told me late last week about rumors of a bug in SB/Chipsets. I thought it was the usual hoopla you hear through the technology grapevine and didn't give it much credit.

Wow, I'm surprised at this since Intel does a fairly good job at catching issues like this in the QA process. People make mistakes obviously but their design process usually helps to find/correct problems like this.

Boy, I would hate to be in the staff meetings today! Its not even the bug or the money that Intel will be unhappy with, its the PR image that they will be troubled the most with. After the Pentium math bug disaster, they have been very protective of their image in the public mind.

Sony has a saying "Image is more important than Product" and its a philosophy.

**** it, I'm not going to wait for a revised 13". I'll get me a 13" MBA tomorrow and call it a day.

From what I've read of notebookreviews forum, the SATA bug only affects ports 2-5. Numbering starts at 0, so many systems with only 1 HDD and 1 OD or 2 HDDs and no ODs won't ever be affected by the bug. Still, if I was an owner, I'd want a replacement.

This is an issues with the 6 series chipset (Cougar Point) impacting SATA ports 2-5. If you are using ports 0 and 1 there are no issues. The issue was root caused and a new stepping (B2) is coming end of March.

If you have purchased 6 series platforms, call your supplier to return them (if you are intending to use SATA ports 2-5) All the ODM’s and OEM’s are notified and are being notified and they can give you more detail (or you can use me if you have more questions)

I will keep you posted with any new information I get on this chipset.

More info about the failure mode

Yes ALL six series chipsets both desktop AND mobile are part of this. ALL 6 series chipsets have been recalled and are being pulled. Weather this will change the ship dates on laptops that's clevo's call, but they will NOT be able to get any more chipsets until this is resolved which is looking like end of march'ish (Note thats guided speculation NOT fact on that date). Basically the question being if they destroy and return boards already built thats a question that has been dispatched to Clevo to see what their stance is on that.

GOOD News: This all of Clevo's SNB line and all desktop boards, as the issue is with SATA port 2-5 so motherboards that only use 0-1 (5160 5170 8130 8150) are only affected with the issue for the eSATA port but can be used like normal, the 8170 will see this issue for both the optical and eSATA. The failure mode is medium to long term failure of the port. Ports 2-5 that do have the issue its not critical and so people will need to work with their resellers to get the issue fixed when updated motherboards are avaliable.

BAD News: We will wait for Clevo to tell us when we will get new boards and laptops, as I said above it could be march - april before we do (Again NOT a fact, just an educated guess from what we know)

uh oh start the threads about everyone freaking out.....probably should just buy the mbp 2010 right now.....

THIS IS TERRIBLE THIS IS WORSE THAN Y2K OR 2012 COMBINED AND MULTIPLIED BY A JACKELOPE

Do you think this could spread to other computers?

Hi All,

I am still looking for advise from more knowledgeable people.
Just purchased an HP i7-2600 Sandy Bridge to do gaming and waiting on the MBP refresh. Should I return it because of the latest developments?

If you're going to use more than 2 SATA ports, that's a definite yes. You should contact your point of sale to get details about the return process in light of the development though. You shouldn't have to pay shipping, restocking fees etc.

Not only should you return it, but you should also consider killing yourself with a blunt object, such as a Magic Mouse. Yes, death by Magic Mouse. You'll make the headlines. Will Apple listen then?

You know what this means...

Apple will never ship out MBP 13 inch with Sandy Bridge until the fixes are complete. Apple was criticized when they launched iphone in 2007 without 3G. Their explanation was that battery life was not optimized for 3G and AT&T network was not ready to meet iPhone's data traffic. Everyone was like screw apple and they were right.
Apple doesn't like to jump on early technology and they certainly won't jump into sandy Bridge until these issues are resolved.

I am expecting to see core 2 Duo again in next refresh on 13 MBP, 13 MBA and 11 MBA.
