macs usually last like 6 years right? I want it to last me all through college and after

When Scully and Amelio were in charge of Apple, they'd last a long time.

Now, however, things are faster paced and the systems improve more rapidly. After one or two years you may realize that there are newer systems that will work better for you.

Treat it with love, purchase applecare, and you can get 6 years out of it, sure.
But if you want 6 years out of it... Wait for Sandybridge. You'll thank me later.

Can you explain to me what the big deal is on sandybridge is in lamens terms? I'm good with computers but I don't understand the technical details.

I do not trust that it won't affect MBPs.
It's not Intel I'd be concerned with.

The fervor at Apple is with iOS, everything else is on the back burner.

To counter that, Apple will "talk it up" using their standard tactics. The hype machine will tell us OS X users what they've determined we want to hear so that they keep us waiting. Great stories will be woven to buy time as asset allocation is channeled into iOS with full force.

We have two distinct channels at Apple. iOS, and everything else. Channel One iOS gives Apple the attention they so desperately seek. The money they can't live without, and the opportunity to climb up the ladder of consumer electronics & appliance companies.

iOS IS Apple.

lol im sick of the ipod/iphone/ipad news

To someone who use iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes a lot. Going from a C2D processor with a SSD, to a i5 processor. Would I see any difference in speed????

Sandybridge incorporates a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) within the CPU (Central Processing Unit). What this gets you is improved battery life and performance, as well as the new CPU being faster.

Yay, I got even more justification for my upcoming MBA purchase.

Anyways, this delay may cause Intel to do a more thorough bug check, so that when iMacs and MBPs will be released with Sandy Bridge, they will almost be guaranteed to be bug free. An extra month now may be worth a year later.

I am so glad I got tired of waiting for a decent refresh for my mid 2008 13" Unibody MacBook and dropped in a SSD. I really don't care anymore.

Ohh how much better batery life? Or we don't know?

Yikes. Sad news for those waiting for a refresh. But the current offerings are just absolutely not worth the money now. Maybe if their prices dropped, but that hardware is very outdated at the current price points.

Not sure if there are many statistics out there on that yet, but it should be significant enough to warrant the wait. Less strain on the battery means that you can leave your laptop running without being plugged in for longer, which in turn means you don't have to be as careful about keeping it charged, (which is also good for the battery because it needs to be used to stay healthy) like i have to on my macbook (see sig for model).

Edited: nevermind, I was totally wrong.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; nl-nl) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

Thks for the info.

But that really s*cks, 'cause most likely (based on former updates etc.) the new mbp (after the on in April or so) will be in jan.-feb. 2012

That's to late :(
Than that mean I will be sitting in college for 4 monds whit no mbp :(

I'm gonna need a lot of pations…

There's no reason you have to buy as soon as they release the update -- just wait until they actually release Lion. It's not like you need the computer sooner than that. If they haven't released it by the time classes start, buy the computer anyway: if they release Lion within the next 30 days, you'll probably get a free upgrade (based on previous releases), and if not, you still have a good computer and can upgrade the OS later.

New Dell XPS17 laptop that just shipped could be affected by this problem. I'm not sure if it uses the same chipset or not. But there are more than a few laptops that are shipping as we speak with Sandy Bridge i5/i7 chips.
