People who have gotten OS X working on Atom-powered netbooks say it's really slow.

Not true.

But I am a bit bemused as to why Atom would go into a desktop, other than a media centre sort of machine. I was actually thinking of an EEE Box to go under the tv, but I might hang off to see what pans out on this.

Out of interest this is where the Atom 330 stands in processor benchmarks (From here)

The Apple TV makes absolute sense.

Though, maybe it's a way of hindering people from using the Mac Mini as an "Apple TV"?

Why the devil would they want people to buy an Apple TV instead of a Mini?

The Mini is clearly the higher profit machine (in absolute terms), as well as being higher margin.

An Atom running Mac OS X, it pretty much screams fail at Apples premium high margin business model. It would be more like a desktop iphone than a desktop.

Oh my mistake, i must have a different understanding of proof.;)

What does Apple's profits and margin have to do with consumers choosing to buy either?

So we have rumors of the Mac mini getting Firewire 800, dual hard drive options (mini server) and dual display connectors which are all significant upgrades yet now we are hearing rumors of an Atom processor. Doesn't make sense. I feel that rumors of various different products are getting lumped together.

I tried a netbook the other week and couldn't believe how fast it was. A micro mac sounds pretty cool. They aren't that bad. Least your energy bill will be better and the birds will thank you for it.

Or, they are simply rumors.

Nothing. But it does have everything to do with what purchases Apple would want to encourage.

Apple intentionally pushing customers to buy an Apple TV over a Mini makes no sense, up selling them on a Mini from an Apple TV does.

EDIT: And the post I was replying to was suggesting Apple might be doing the former.

Why use an Atom when a Via Nano 1.3GHz runs 3 times as fast and cost less and draws significantly less power at 3-6w

:apple: Where are you going? Get back to fundamentals please

Lol Atom is not a good sign... But I think it might drop prices of Mac Mini?? BUT IM SO HAPPY that we got some news of the release, I think its clear that the iMac might also release in March...

So, I guess Apple did figure out a way to make the Mini even smaller. If this is actually true, they better lower the price.

Do not use the mini name.

They should come out with a different name like the mac nano or mac atom. Call it a mac mini and the result would be a huge disapontment to consumers. :apple:

Just as some others have said, I think that the sources are getting mixed up. I don't believe that Apple would put an Atom in a Mini, so I believe Mini will retain the Core 2 Duo's. So, As some other stated, I also believe that this is a mix up and could be an Apple TV upgrade, or a netbook, or mini tablet, the latter which I highly doubt. But then again, nothing can be certain with Apple, they have definitely gone against the grain sometimes.

Really, nobody would put an Atom processor into anything that comes with a power cable attached. You use an Atom processor if you are running on tiny batteries and have an operating system that you can't port to an ARM processor. Like Windows.

That device will most likely use ARM.

If this rumor is true, then Apple is really pushing GPU offloading (like $1299 MacBook CPU GHz drop) - most likely too much at this point in time.

It's fine to be pushing it on the hardware side if they'd fleshed out a few more details on the software side.

I suspect Snow Leopard is not that ready, otherwise MacWorld “we're going to talk about the Mac” would have made some mention of it.

HAH, Atom...... I knew Apple would try to make it smaller. Makes me glad I went with the Hackintosh.

Who needs a microscopic desktop? Morons.

Sufficient for the vast majority of casual users.

Ad to this that with the bundle keyboard and mouse it sells for $399 and...

Oh wait...

Atom Mini? That's a big step down from Core 2 duo. If the price remains same, then the profit will be astounding.

Do yourselves a favor and have friends at Intel.

The Atom is not going into the Mac Mini.

The Atom is a 32bit chipset.

The Nvidia Ion platform is helping netbook maker, Intel, period.

Snow Leopard and forward are targeting 64 bit only platforms, including the iPhones which ARM Cortex-A9 is 64 bit.

Not a Mac Mini!

It will be called "MacBook Mini" and it will be Apple's answer to the NetBook revolution. The display will have higher resolution (1377x768?) compared to the typical 1024x600 netbook, and the machine itself would probably look very similar to the new HP 2140...

Apple will probably price the low end model at $599 and the high end model (SSD?) at $749 though $499 and $599 would be more realistic price points for Apple to compete effectively in the netbook market.

Of course, Apple will claim that MacBook mini is not a netbook...

Read my lips: It ain't gonna happen.

It makes no sense,

And Apple is not that crazy.

If you're gonna use an Atom processor, at lease put it in some portable device. What on earth will you do with such a thing on a desktop?
