Looks like a lockdown to me. These bloggers are obviously the guinea pigs testing the latest build, so if it doesn't work, then Apple believes they're doing something right on their end. Add the "iPhone Security Developer" job posting (read: anti-jailbreaker) to the mix and it seems like Apple's going to move toward creating a more stable and secure platform on all their hardware products.

Go read their forums. A lot of them are Apple users, or at the very least buy legit copies of OSX to install. Not every Mac user blindly follows Apple's ideas of what the best hardware is.

Exactly. The bulk of Hackintosh users are actual Apple users who just want to use their technically knowledge to take advantage of other hardware on the Market. Apple has a very limited range of hardware.

Excellent!!! I hope Apple succeeds in getting rid of all of these useless Hackintosh users. They are not customers of Apple and they just make useless justifications as to why they think they should have the RIGHT to install OS X on non-Apple hardware. GO APPLE!! Get rid of the fake Mac users.
You realise what you sound like, don't you?

My Dell Mini 9 is what I use on my way to work. It fits in my pocket for the most part and is easy to use on a cramped train. I tried using my MBP but it was just too big.

I use mine in my truck as a media center for itunes and such for road trips wired it in to power and hooked up a slick usb sound card to the aux in port for some great sound!

I used to run Mac OS on an Atari ST using the "Magic Sac" (and, later, "Spectre" and 'Spectre GCR") emulator from Gadgets By Small. Worked great! But when Apple released newer versions of the OS that weren't compatible, I didn't go crazy whining about it. I knew it would eventually stop working (with the latest OS) and just accepted the fact that that time had come.

Intel Atom users need to learn to accept reality.

Pull your head out of the sand...

Pull your head out of the sand... of course it's intentional!

1) Apple's in a Pystar throw-down in the courts
2) Apple's breaking Palm Pre syncing with every iTunes update
3) Apple's putting chips into iPhones so they can't be jailbroken

What about this trend do you not see.

Apple CREATES the whole widget, as Jobs has said famously... guess what... they want to CONTROL it too!

It amazes me that many here are saying that this was not purposely done. Of course it is.

by gum, I was transfixed by that fascinating video...
more movies like this one please!

I think it's a real shame. I don't know if I'd want Apple to officially support non-Apple hardware, but I don't think they should limit the products. It could be a great introduction to OS X for people that might not be able to afford a Mac.

I don't care if they support it, I just don't want them to break it.

As a tinkerer, I like the possibility of being able to play with OS X on non-Apple hardware. But remember, part of the Apple experience is the combination of OS X on Apple hardware. Anything outside of that experience has the potential to taint the Apple experience and Apple will do everything to keep that from happening.

Surprised Apple would do this. Hackintoshes are the gateway drug to the full Macintosh experience. And Apple doesn't even have to support them. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of recent Apple switcher's first experiences of OS X were on a Hackintosh.

THIS 'useless Hackintosh user' tried a Hackintosh and only AFTER it, bought his first mac - and since spent a total of about £3500 on Apple hardware.

THIS 'useless Hackintosh user' refused to buy a Mac for a very long time because of the hideous, vitriolic troll like behaviour of mac users like yourself.

THIS 'useless Hackintosh user' wonders if you actually realise that by being such a hideously offensive character, you're damaging the reputation of Apple and its users and reducing the likelihood of people wanted to try a Mac.

THIS 'useless Hackintosh user' knows several people who refuse to try or buy a Mac specifically because of people like you.

While I agree that his post was rather mean spirited, you also overestimate the impact people like you have on Apple's bottom line.

Alright, hopefully this thread won't turn into 672 pages of legalese and rod-in-anus "moral" superiority. So, here is the question: how and why did Apple selectively remove support for a standard x32 CPU from the kernel? Since all other Intel chips (be them x32 or x64) have to function under Mac OS, then does it not follow that Apple specifically added new logic to detect the presence of an Atom CPU--at which point the kernel is then "set" to core dump? Some individuals have thrown around the idea that the reason for lost Atom support has something to do with the compiler, or with new kernel optimizations that require a feature that the Atom architecture doesn't have...like SSE4. This strikes me as pure BS. The original Core Duo chips didn't have SSE4, so it follows that these chips would be killed by 10.6.2 as well. And that is not happening.

Hence, it seems extremely unlikely that dropped Atom support was accidental or a side-effect of some change to the kernel/compiler. It seems like additional logic was purposely added to specifically detect an Atom-type CPU and then kill the OS.

Not that it matters, thankfully. I'm sure a patched kernel will be out there within weeks after 10.6.2 is released. Any company that shows such animosity for hackers is ultimately defeated.

No. iPods and iPhones are the gateway drug. The fact that hackintosh users exist is incidental, and the fact that some of them go ahead and buy a legit Mac is also incidental.

They are just protecting their software, good job Apple! :p

By preventing it from being sold?

I know about a dozen people who switched from PCs to Macs after going the hackintosh route. Most of them bought MacBook Pros. I think hackintoshes are an insidious way of expanding Mac sales.

No doubt about iPods/iPhones, but as I said, I know several former PC users who bought Macs because of hackintoshing. iPods and iPhones had nothing to do with their decisions.

Apple will succeed. :D Those whining about these initiatives from Apple know the game is up for them, and that's why they are crying it's not fair.

I don't know why this kind of news is even posted around here. This kind of news is essentially promoting stealing of Apple's business from Windoze fan boys who are too cheap to buy a real computer.

Anyone who is using a 'Hackintosh' does not belong within the Apple family and should be banned from sites like these.

Extremely doubtful. Hackintosh users are either already Mac users or users who refuse to pay an Apple tax. You take their Hackintosh away they are just going to say oh well and move on. If anything it will deter potential customers.

Tell me you're practising your sarcasm. Please?

A lot of these Hackintosh users are people they kept Apple alive when they were struggling. Have you been on Hackintosh forums? Most of the users are LONG TIME Apple supporters.

The opinions and expressions of other people should have no merit on your buying decisions.
You work for your money and buy what you wish with it, this is not high school where everyone must ware the "cool" branded shows or there considered poor or uncool.
