...all you have to do is compile your application to a *FAT* binary type, and OSX will do the rest.
A fat binary is still two separate apps, they're just combined for the USER'S convenience. Both in one place and the OS runs the correct one, so the user doesn't have to think about it.

But the developer still has to make both versions, whether combined as fat or not. And making the new x86 version won't be simple in every case.

Fat binaries could well be a helpful part of the transition--as it was for 680x0->PPC--but I don't think it will help the developers that much, other than by making things convenient for their customers.

There have been a few comments that the timing (5pm on Friday, i.e. last chance to get a story out before Monday morning) of the CNET story is suspicious, and points to a planned leak.
Also, the fact of major news sites relating the report--and with confidence--points to a high-up source. And THAT too points to a planned leak.

does anybody know the macrumors record?
Excellent. They gather rumors and reports from other sites more often than not lately, rather than having their own rumors. But their record of judging who and what to give credence to is very good, so they're still the top rumor site in my book. And if they have few sources, that's probably just Apple's increasing secrecy, coupled with MR being selective. ThinkSecret has the best record as far as their own rumors, but they've had some big misses too. AppleInsider also has done fairly well recently. And MR has its very own scoops sometimes! Like the 12" and 17" PowerBooks.

I was gonna say why isn't this just a G6 with a slightly more complex upgrade cycle...I know thats a gross over simplification but you can think of it like that.
Good point. If Apple tomorrow announced an IBM G6 for 2007, would people stop buying Macs until then? Of course not. G5s are great NOW, and will get faster, until the G6 comes along. So if Apple announces an Intel chip for 2007, the same goes. AS LONG as PPC software will still run on it, with performance that's not too bad. (Emulation slowing things down, but the chips' own speed compensating some maybe.) And as long as native Mac x86 software is out--which 2 years allows plenty of time for. (Or 1 year even, to begin the consumer transition, supposedly--but the top-end performance crunch is in the pro lineup.)

I think you misunderstood the question. He meant the record for most forums posts on a topic. If this isn't the most yet, it HAS to be the fastest growing thread yet

Forgive me for not reading the 1100+ other replies in this thread for the answer if it was already posted. Will the WWDC keynote be broadcast online? I'd really like to watch it if for no other reason than this Intel business.

It won't be live but should be on apple's site later in the evening. That's how it happened last year at least.

Me.

I didn't even study for my Art History final which happens tomorrow @ 11:45AM central...right in time for me to miss the Keynote.

Over this and other things...I just cannot get my mind on my revisions with the excitement over this! This is by far WAY more interesting than my exam can ever hope to be...

Then replace "excellent" with "frightening" in my reply :)

(And I think the first Apptel thread may have ballooned even faster?)

As the article says, I don't like the idea of a locked-down platform...but seeing as I don't have a TV licence, I do like the idea of having a sort of iTheatre...lol. It'd be nice to get some movies on my computer w/o having the hassle of buying DVDs and such.

But then again, it's not something I would use that often as I'm not the biggest TV person...so again, the locked-down platform idea...blegh...

it's 4 AM in miami... i'm retiring, hopefully i wake up without a hangover around 3 pm and read good things. goodnight

If anyone's staying up late and can't get enough talk of this rumor, the new this week in tech podcast by the old tech tv crew is now up

http://twit.tv/

Where? It says it's available but there is no link anywhere on the site.

EDIT: Never mind. Looks like it's available via BitTorrent. :/

Yeah. Hardware lockdown does not sound good. I came to Apple from Acorn when my Archimedes finally died. An unfettered platform is important to me philosophically. Castle are now doing good things with RISC OS again. Who knows? I might switch back!

Hardware lockdown on movies could certainly cramp parts of my VJ style as well. Not as much as you might think as I make most of my own content but sampling dancing cartoon characters and cool effects from SF movies may become more difficult.

Windows/Intel emulation cards ?

Before and after the introduction of the Powerpc processors , Apple made and sold emulator cards for Windows/Intel . Why couldn't Apple resume making such cards again ? With today's ram , they might cram 8 to 16 GB of ram on each card .

Just because Apple makes and sells powerpc computers, doesn't mean they can't also sell Intel/Windows machines as well. It would just be an additional market to sell to .

I just don't understand all the complaints with moving to x86. With the Centrino, and new dual mobile processor coming, Intel has shown a commitment to mobile computer technology.

If somebody can answer this question, I'll shut up.
WHAT FUTURE MOBILE PROCESSOR HAS IBM OR FREESCALE COMMITTED TO?

If anyone can answer that, I'll bow down and call you Master...because the answer is nothing.

Let me support Intel
1) Proven to commit to mobile computer technology
---What do you want, a weak, lame ass G5 mobile chip?

2) Ability to compete and exceed on the desktop platform.

What does IBM have? Cell? a chip that can't and won't be ported over for real computing use?

If anyone can honestly say they are happy with the performance upgrades of IBM then let me know, because I just think your crazy, and worse, without proof.

I spoke this morning with an extremely reliable osurce within IBM that confirms that the current Power5 will be upgraded to Power6 and will exceed 6 Ghz. These processors are already running at Poughkeepsie and will be build at the Fishkill plant.

I see absolutely no reason why Apple would switch to Intel. The PPC range has still a lot to give.

And besides, how many of the Apple users are really complaining about a lack of performance ? Maybe .01 % ?

Seems like the chance of the switch to Intel has just increased now that the BBC is reporting it. Who'd have thought?

It's just the same article fromp CNET again ... :(
