Yes, but what are the odds that Intel will be willing to produce a completely new chip for a company that has very little market share?
What if Intel believes, along with Apple, that this new switch and a new chip will increase Apple's marketshare significantly (10% marketshare would be a 4x-5x increase from present) and are willing to go in and gamble on that. More is possible when people get a feel for OSX. Intel does not like to be as dependent upon Microsoft as they are, and with Microsoft going to IBM for their game consoles instead of Intel, perhaps Intel is doing this to hedge their position. Just a thought.

yup, sums it up pretty well...
My guess is that OS9 appl won't be supported in a Mac x86 machine. What are the chances the guys with money at your dept will go for a Apple solution next time.
I am one of very few at my dept with a Mac. I feel like an alien when I begin to talk about Macs. I work with game theory, so most of my stuff (see signature) can be found for Macs. Since I am a theorist I don't run these huge data sets, but if I did I would be worried right now. :(

One of my profs wanted to buy a Dual 2.7 with his own grant money. The university ITS department made him sign a waiver that they wouldn't support his machine if anything went wrong. This is the same department that has 20 hours a week of scheduled downtime for it's $10,000 barely functional Exchange 2003 Server.

After the keynote today it will be interesting to see if they leave the information on apple.com about the G5 processor unchanged. Right now the G5 page DOES NOT speak very highly of anything offered in the x86 world and shows the G5 completely crushing them all in benchmarks. My guess is that this information will be gone by this afternoon.
Or maybe they will announce the Intel-based G6 (see post # 1347) which will compete with or surpass the 2.7 GHz G5. 90 minutes till the truth is revealed (or not revealed). :D

It's not just the processors that cause apple to go with non-standard mobos etc. it's the innovative design and architecture of their hardware. Unless apple completely bought in to the intel mentality and will now be producing beige boxes and trashy see-through cases with neon lighting, then we will still have to shell out extra for the classy apple design. I for one am okay with paying a premium for something that doesn't depress me everytime I look at it.

There's no reason that Macs have to be "trashy" just because they use off the shelf parts. The true cost savings could be seen at the low end and in the laptops. After all, a powerbook's design isn't all that different from anyone else's. There has already been a Mac mini clone shown with Intel parts. The key here is that they are not locked into custom parts anymore and if budget becomes a big deal, they can take advantage of that.

What if the price of the new Centrino M 2GHz+ is $1999? ;)

I know but think about it , its a piece of collection !!!
My Apple collection is getting too big already ... Apple IIci, Powermac 6500, 300 MHz Blue & White G3, Powerbook 5300ce, Powerbook G3 Wallstreet, 500 MHz Powerbook G4 Titanium. Not sure I have any more room for the collection to grow (at a premium no less). LOL :p

OK, with an hour and a half to go, here is iGary's official guess™:

1. Apple will not switch to X86. Period.
2. Apple MAY have Intel manufacture PowerPC chips for them.
3. The whole thing was/is a hoax.

:D

I agree, I think Intel will end up creating a PPC chip.

And yeah, there's still a few thinking that this will all be a HUGE hoax and Steve will easily dismiss it before introducing something cool at WWDC.
See post 1016. But only if you live in the fact that this is all still just a dream. :D

That's my problem, too. I've got an Apple IIc, IIsi, Performa 475, Powerbook 520, Powerbook 1400, Another Powerbook 1400, iMac DV+, Powerbook G3 Pismo, and iMac G4..

Wow, that's a whole lot more than I remember. And I'm just beginning to run out of space.

I know the feeling, just how many computers and wireless network devices do you need in a 2 bedroom terraced house?

Not sure but I'm sure Steve will enlighten me in just over an hour.

Still thinking I need a new laptop and iMac, for no other reason than becasue I want. :D :D :D :D :D

What a scoop!!

Who sent this find in to MacRumors or did you find it arn?

Update 2: Legal Counsel for Transitive Technologies has posted to bio: Transitive Technologies: Represented Transitive Technologies in a co-development and licensing agreement with Apple Computer. Transitive was the focal point of a Page 2 story regarding their "Dynamite" which allowed code written for one CPU to be run efficiently on another CPU. This "translator" was said to dynamically translate and accelerate binaries -- claiming to provide substantial performance over traditional "emulators".

That was an interesting find - I STILL think it means nothing for Intel/Apple - this is going to be the biggest announcement that nobody had right EVER.

Besides, it can't be true that Apple is switching to Intel - this would have been out a while back - sounds to me more like Apple is announcing a WIMAX rollout.

It's not going to be what everyone thinks. It won't be a complete switch to Intel. If there is any partnership with Intel, it might be for chips used in digital lifestyle devices, but not in the mainline macs.

I may have to eat it later, but I say Apple leaked the Intel news to get the markets ready and this is a done deal. Apple is going to announce that the Transitive Technologies partnership to develop emulation for the new Intel chip will make the transition more seamless than an OS upgrade.

Anything short of that sends a message to the markets that Apple isn't going to sell many Macs until Macs ship with the new chip and actually work.

Why bother? What's the benefit of them doing it over IBM? Is the thought that they can come up with a workable G5 notebook solution or boost the MHZ on the desktop models at a faster pace than IBM? Will they be able to make them more cheaply?

Questions, questions...anyway this goes there are questions.

My prediction

OK, here's my guess. Apple will go with x86 on the lower end machines and laptops now and leave the G5 alone. The x86 machines will run with emulation so that the transition is seamless. New G5 machines will be released, but they'll just be a speed bump, no dual core:-( They may have PCI express in them though. In addition to having new x86 chips in them, the Mac Mini will have it's RAM boosted and have a new video card. Basicly, I see Apple ditching the dead end stuff from Freescale immediately and leave the door open for the top end stuff later on. They can make the decision on what to put in the powermac series based on what is availible at the time. This will eventually mean that they will put some sort of AMD or Intel chip in them. The best news is that this will mean that APPLE will at long last be able to choose the best processors for the top end, regardless of who is making them. They won't be locked into a particular manufacturer any longer! Yipee! Big things are ahead, choice can only be good!
