Maybe. Apple is clearly aiming for an ecosystem of consumer appliances. They show little interest in general computing. Microsoft has their own issues with Windows, at least the "home" versions, becoming more like X-Box. I understand this. The average user gets into trouble with too much control and flexibility.

Fortunately, for those with a passion for technology, there will always be Linux providing all the rope anyone needs to hang themselves (or accomplish great things).

Pick your platform: consumer appliance, game machine or down and dirty tech. I use all three. 🤪
Good point. And as much as I like Apple's sleek laptops, I would really miss it if I could no longer get my hands dirty and build my own desktop computers, and I doubt Apple will ever support that. ;)

It would take a pretty mammoth improvement for apple to suddenly decide going back to an off the shelf solution is superior to In-house. Even if Intel were slightly faster (which is a pipe dream), Apple would just refine the software to handle the discrepancy.

It depends on what market segment you are talking about. Apple cannot compete with Intel or AMD on the high-performance workstation and gaming markets (where it's more about raw performance than about saving some Watts), and I doubt they ever will. Likewise, they will remain an Intel customer for their data centers.

They could theoretically make similar chip architecture to compete against Apple Silicon. It's not happening tomorrow. However, Intel is already adapting with their 12th gen chips which are somewhat of a hybrid and a transition. I don't get the whole anti-Intel thing, especially if you're an American. I think also Intel will invest not solely in designing, but becoming a foundry to other's chip designs, much like TSMC. This is how Intel gets back Apple's business. Which only made up I believe about 5% of their revenues.
What does being an American have to do with being pro- or anti-Intel? Do I also have to limit my car choices to Ford, Chevy, Tesla, etc? Can I only get the Librem 5 USA model for my phone? 🙄

The thing you need to remember, is that Apple designed the latest Macbook Pro design in 2014 when Intel's roadmap lead to cooler, smaller (< 14nm much faster) chips. So in 2016, Intel started to fall so far behind but Apple's design was already created. If Intel followed through with their roadmap, cooling wouldn't be an issue on the macs.

Also, my older Macbook Pro (2016) is no hotter/noisier than my work HP laptop - which is thicker. But even opening up Azure DevOps causes the fans to spin up on my work laptop.
Oh that's ridiculous, go and watch the vids I posted and weep. They REMOVED the freaking heat pipe. But then THEY PUT IT BACK IN FOR THE M1. AND they put an air gap between the CPU and heatsink of the Intel models. Yes, a freaking air gap. Go and watch the vids, and then get back to me with your Apple apologies.

After spending a year with a fan-free M1 MacBook Air that kicks ass... not a great defense for Intel.
Yeah, but in the fan free M1, the put the heat pipe back in, and removed the air gap between the the CPU and heatsink. These are the two things they gimped on the Intel. Go and watch the vids I posted first if you are going to comment, and prepare to weep. Don't even bother me otherwise.

It’s not an Apple apology. It’s a proven statement. And you completely missed my part that my work laptop (NOT Apple) gets hot and loud too. Sometimes worse than my MacBook Pro.

  • If they couldn't do it in over a decade, then it's probably not going to happen.
  • Apple would stay with intel, if intel gave Apple what Apple needed.
  • If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.

So Apple makes a product that works better, that they can design to customize for their devices, that they can control the production of..... why exactly would they abandon that and go back to Intel.

I mean even the millions and millions spent on their own processor development really says that they're not going back.

No, it’s based on my experience with actual engineers. If you’ve had a different experience, good for you! However, based on what I see coming out of Intel… he’s no Lisa Su.
I’m an actual engineer. You have no knowledge of my soft skills.

Your comment appears to only further the stereotype that is so often incorrectly placed upon engineers.

Regardless of your background you don’t get those kind of roles in companies such as Intel by simply being a good engineer with no other skill sets.

Not that Apple is ever going to go after the workstation, server or gaming markets (as they exist today), but at some point these market segments will realize that performance per watt is in fact crucial to the very survival of the market. Energy is not free and making devices that are huge energy users, when more efficient options exist or should be further developed, is not a place any manufacturer is going to want to be in the coming years.
