So, anyone remember what the price point on the iBook was before the went to the Intel MacBook? I'll give you a hint, the price went up.

That was Apple switching from a $72 processor to processors costing far above $200.

You and Snowy should do this sort of thing more often, I think it's awesome to be able to put a design to the description, and both of you are certainly talented in doing so.

Design probably weighs into my appreciation for any product more than most people in this forum, but it's cool to see what Apple could do with future products. Anyone have Mr. Ive's email address? 😉

Keep up the good work!

PS: I think most people would agree that talking about new designs is much more constructive than the ensuing name-calling over integrated graphics. Kudos.

Hey, I'd love to, so long as my time permits. But I also have to get involved with a discussion about some new hardware. Feel free to ask me about mock-ups if there's a hardware discussion going on.

And here's my latest. I know the keyboard is a little crummy, but I was feeling lazy...

Yes, and my point is that now their processor price will be going down, so they can return to their preferred price point. 🙄

Eh, we'll forgive you.

Wireless... and a nice touch of color on the screen. Very nice. Thanks again.

Thanks! (But sorry, no new pics for now.)

Are we there yet? How long now? Are we there yet? 🙂

So, if they have a choice between keeping the current price point and upgrading the processor immediately, or cutting the price point, which do you think they'd like to do?

My guess is that the MacBook will see a price break taking it back down to the price point of the iBook (or possibly even lower 😱 !).

However, that's only my guess. I, like most others here, have no inside information, only guesses (some educated, others less so). 😉

Even though it is possible that Apple will cut the price on the MacBook, I think the most likely change will be a processor bump from 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz to 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz Intel Core (1) Duos.

Even though Boot Camp has changed the game somewhat, Apple still does not compete on even ground with other PC manufacturers, particularly in the lower end of their product spectrum. The selling point for these computers is not their sheer power (or affordability) but their ease of use. Therefore Apple can afford not to enter (fully) into a head-to-head GHz/price race with other manufacturers. I am not suggesting that Apple can slack off, only that there is no automatic correlation between the best-spec'ed products from other manufacturers in the low-to-mid range price category and what Apple produces

Thank you for that.

MacBook will not get a speed bump - simply a Core Duo to Core 2 Duo advancement with no price change and top remaining @ 2GHz. This will bring with it twice the battery life as Core Duo. No later than Thanksgiving.

MacBook Pros will get both Core 2 Duo and top speed bump to 2.33GHz with no price change. No later than September 12.

Amazingly pessimistic. You say that you've been around for many years, but when have you seen a processor released by the manufacturer (Motorola, IBM, now Intel) when it wasn't immediately put into a Mac? Was it a few months from the release of the Core before it was available in a Mac? No. It was immediate. And processors from Motorola and IBM were available immediately (indeed, Apple was often the announcer of the new chip being available in those instances).

having been an apple warranty tech, and a computer/network tech in general for 7 years, i know this field moves fast, but apple inc is often the last one on board for a new technology

over the last 27 years that i have been using apple products, there are times when i have been pleasantly surprised by apple but those "firsts" came more often in apple's past, but i also keep a running subscription to pc world as well as macworld and it's a good way to see how both progress through the months and through the years

i seriously doubt an announcement for a pro desktop at WWDC...but the best case scenario would be both an announcement of the product and that all models in the pro desktop line are to ship immediately 🙂
