My Macbook is now 10 degrees C warmer, and I can really feel the difference. A subtle whine is coming from the top left side of the computer as well. I can't see how this would be an upgrade to anything when everything was better before the update.

I'm getting the same whine/slight vibration from my macbook since updating. I have a few questions.

1. How do I downgrade this update? If I can't downgrade, will a clean install of os x do the trick?
2. What temp. should my macbook be running?
3. Does anyone have a link to a temp. app/widget?

This is actually a good thing! 34 C was probably incorrect because some Core duo chips have a bug that prevents the temp from being read correctly. 46 c is what is should be. The firmware probably just has a software patch to fix the hardware bug.

My C2D iMac run idle at about 36-37 C, your saying that is incorrect?

Mac Mini w/ core 2 duo?

I upgraded my mini to a core 2 duo. Which means that from now on, firmware updates will be just a little bit more exciting. :)

Anybody know, before I plunge in, whether this update will have any impact on my upgraded mini?

Mind you, he is referring to the MacBook. I would expect iMacs to run cooler.

Ahh, that makes sense.
I have no problems with Sleep issues or Booting...Should I really run the firmware update? I really don't want my system running any hotter then it already does.

I've just got home and install the update, does not look like it's fixed the core duo bug.. oh well no biggy..

I would expect the imac to run cooler than the macbook as the imac's fans can afford to be running at a higher speed and the heats sync is bigger..

Also the Core 2 machines shouldn't have this bug and are meant to run cooler anyway.. so..

back to smcFanControl to get me temp readings..

I'm the same, I don't think I'll run the update. As the saying goes "if it aint broke, don't fix it."

I understand where you're coming from, but from what some other users are saying, the temperatures are actually the same. Someone mentioned that there was a bug with the CD processors that reported the temperatures incorrectly. So I guess this means your computer is running at the same temperature as before, but the reporting is now more accurate (as 10-20 degrees hotter). Unless, of course, people are noticing an increase in temperature by touch. That's a little different...

hmmm, this could be true. But, personally I've never bothered to look at my temperatures, so a firmware fix to fix this doesn't really affect me. Firmwares can be great, but also be wonky. So right now my machine is running how I want it to so taking that risk doesn't seem worth it for some "more accurate" temperature reporting.

yeah, I know what you mean. I was a little hesitant to do it too since I too was not having any sleep issues. But I just can't stand having something show up in software update and not downloading it! The update was actually the first time I've gotten a firmware update to go through on the first try. So woohoo apple.

Display flickering now!

Anybody got any display flickering issues. The screen brightness suddenly drops and flicks back up again. Checked the obvious, but the mains power is plugged in and battery fully charged, screen or top case flex doesn't replicate it.

My MacBook is cursed, first it lost the 80GB hard drive... now this :(

I'm about to install it. I'm actually happy about temperature rises, makes it run longer on battery because the fans don't spin so fast. And if you want to use your Macbook (Pro) on your lap, I highly recommend SMCFanConrtol (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049). It's basically a slider where you can set your fan speed up (not down) to a constant speed. 2500 rpm is just perfect for my taste to use the Macbook on my lap, and you can't really hear the fans (the hard drive covers it well). So if you have concerns about heat, use this piece of software and raise the lowest fan speed (1500 rpm on Macbooks).

The stock minimum speed is supposedly 1000 RPM. The fans probably don't take more than a watt of power, meaning a minute or two battery life difference assuming they are maxed out.

My MBP is as ridiculously hot as it always was, with the update, but now it doesn't wake from sleep. Way to unfix the problem, Apple.

I have exactly the same f*** problem!
Damn ...
The last firmware update cured my rsd and made it run really cool - everything was perfect!!!!

NOW - it's HOT again AND i have a strange "WHINE" sound - just like you!

Grrrrrr ...

I think i read somewhere that you can't downgrade!!!!

HELP!

More on my firewire issues...

Apparently this update does something to the Target Mode...
The AppleCare techs don't understand what happened, but this
update did cause something serious to happen. Serious enough
to cause the Macbook (in target mode) to cause the Macbook Pro C2D's
1394 to fail as well as it's own. My own fault for testing it on the
Mac Pro after... I should have tried an external drive first.

So, after all is said and done, I have a Macbook and a Mac Pro that
will charge an iPod, but not mount it, and a Macbook Pro that won't
even charge it.

Apple is going to repair the notebooks (via mail-in) and repair the
Mac Pro on-site. The tech also told me NOT to update the firmware
once the 3 of them are repaired.

So, I WOULD NOT recommend putting a Macbook in Target Mode and connecting it to a C2D Macbook Pro after this update. (But if you want
to, please do let me know what happens)

HELP!

though I don't have a MB or MBP, this is the EXACT reason why I don't upgrade the firmware if everything is already running perfect. I feel for you guys :( Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to downgrade a firmware upgrade, reason being, it's not software related it's actual hardware "software" your upgrading (I know that's not the terminalogy, but it's what makes sense in my mind. Basically the "programs" that control the hardware on the hardware itself). So don't bother installing a fresh copy of OS X or anything like that. Correct me if I'm wrong (last time I researched this was 5 years ago for my PC) I believe the only way you can reset your firmware is to send it back to the factory it originated at.

Glad I checked this thread one last time! I was just in the middle of backing up my files before doing a clean install. What action should I take next, Apple store or sit and wait for another update?

Edit: Ah f**k it I'm going to reinstall OS X anyway, what do I have to lose besides time.

Did the update this evening on the core 2 duo mini. No problems so far.

Increased fan rpm..

Hi all,

So far, the average temperature reported by smcFanControl and Fan Control Pref panel is between 47-49 degrees C. Close to what i was getting before EXCEPT.... the Fan Seems to be going off consistantly at 1595-1600rpm. I wonder if one of the changes is the thresholds?

For me, prior to the EFI update, when the Temp hit 50-51, the RPMs would slowly climb from 1500 and would drop back down relatively quickly... once the machine dropped below 50.

i've noted for the last two-three hours, that the above pattern (staying at 1600RPM) has been the case. And no I have not changed my minimum speed to 1600...

Updated the day it came out and so far, everything is fine, except that I've had System Preferences crash a couple of times, which is odd, as System Preferences very rarely crashes. That may not even be related to the firmware update, though. Other than that, it's all good.

updated my macbook and imac (both CD) without a hitch.. this morning

didn't really notice any temperature increase in the macbook using istatnano from pre-updates either..

haven't used either devices much since the update to report any "features" or quirks.. but if anything does happen, i'll post back :)
