You know, I wasn't going to do this update because I haven't had a single problem with my Macbook. BUT I thought well I just should.

I use istatpro widget to monitor cpu temps before the update 34 C

now it's running at 46 C! WTF! It also says fans are n/a also. Did this update wipe out the control to the fans, now it will overheat my Macbook?

Can I go back to an older Firmware?

This is actually a good thing! 34 C was probably incorrect because some Core duo chips have a bug that prevents the temp from being read correctly. 46 c is what is should be. The firmware probably just has a software patch to fix the hardware bug.

The core duo bug does not prevent the machine from working correctly tho, as the temp is actually read from the heat sync and not the CPU. Use smcFancontrol to get the temp from the heat sync.

No problems with the update on the Mac Pro here...

this deleted my camino bookmarks... they are apparently now in an unreadable format.
This is a Camino bug I believe
Probably this one. I've been backing up my bookmarks for awhile now just in case and am using an optimized nightly build with extra logging enabled in the event it does happen (they can obtain more info to find out what is causing it).

I'm not getting the Camera RAW update. Is that because I have Aperture 1.5.1 isntalled ? Could it be that it already has that update ?

Nor am I getting the X11 update.

Done the Firmware update with zero issues (iMac 20" C2D). Firewire still works (I disconnected everything before applying the update).

oh,...........LOL!

Yeah I think this might be the source of peoples Temp increases. Basically some core duo chips stop updating the temp value when they go into a particular powersaving mode.

So when the machine wakes from sleep the cpu will update the temp for a few secs and then stop.

Anyway I've not had change to update my Macbook yet to see if the temp issue is fixed for me.

The question is now is has the bug been fixed by preventing the core duo from entering the powersaving mode? This could probably make chips run hotter?

For more info google intel and AE18 the id of the bug.

I've installed the upgrade on my MB, it seemed to be quicker going to sleep (light flashing) after closing the lid but not sure if that's related to how many apps I've got running/swapped out compared to normal ie not as many.

However, I tried it a few more times and it failed to find my preferred wireless network on one occasion. I was hoping I wouldn't see this happen again!

Temperature seems unaffected (monitored with coreduotemp) - I've had the all the previous EFI/SMC firmware upgrades installed. CPU frequency (according to coreduotemp) still seems stay at 2Ghz for the majority of the time though, prior to the last lot of firmware upgrades I'm sure it used to step down a lot more.

after rebooting now, my fan immediately goes to 2500 and then winds down. I am using the Fan Control in the Preferences Pane and once it winds down, it sits at about 1600 and 122 degrees. The bottom is now hot to the touch.

Any adjustments that I make to the fan do not seem to work!

Panic. I installed the firmware, the little bar was moving across the screen, and then halfway across -- the computer shut down. Now my screen is dead, I can't tell if the hard drive is functioning, my restore CD is 20 miles away, and I'm scared witless. WTF?!?!?!

Suggestions?

Try holding the power button on the machine until you hear a long tone and then see if it boots.

Interesting I have been experiencing a startup bug on my 20" Core 2 iMac, basically on cold boots I get the startup manager (as if option pressed) on virtually every boot. Shame Apple is not more specific about the startup issues that have been fixed.

Currently my machine is at an Apple authorized service center to try and sort out my startup problem, so far they cannot reproduce.... So this puts it down to maybe a USB device causing it to think option has been pressed, very odd and might land me with a repair bill if they cannot reproduce.

If you have any suggestions please see my thread on Apples forums for full details.

Fixes bad wake-from-sleep behavior in MacBook Pro

This is a welcome update. I had been irritated with just how long it took the MacBook Pro to wake from sleep. Often it would wake up, put up the security dialog, and then, if I didn't get back to it fast enough, hide that panel. I would then hit a key or move the mouse and WAIT for 30 or 40 seconds before the security dialog would be shown again. This odd behavior has been remedied. Now, upon waking from sleep, the security panel comes right up, accepts my password right away, and I can get down to business with no problems.

Good job, Apple.

I updated earlier today, and didn't unplug anything. I had an USB issue after the reboot; the keyboard stopped working. It was plugged into a USB hub. Oddly, the USB hard drive I had plugged into the same hub still worked. (So did my firewire 400 and 800 drives. ) Unplugging and reconnecting the hub solved the problem.

Recommend unplugging hubs.

This was on an iMac 24".

Maybe its just me or maybe the problems are not as bad as they seem but I'm really getting afraid to load any update from Apple unless I have a specific problem that is supposed to be corrected.

My Macbook is now 10 degrees C warmer, and I can really feel the difference. A subtle whine is coming from the top left side of the computer as well. I can't see how this would be an upgrade to anything when everything was better before the update.

My Macbook is also about 10 degree's warmer (@ 52C) but I'm not hearing any whines though.

I've updated my MBP 1.83 Core Duo without any problems. It's been running now for 4 hours. The temperature stayed the same, but I have reapplied the thermal compund in the past, so heat hasn't been an issue since.

I unplugged everything, closed any applications, and repaired permissions before running the update on my MacBook CD 2.0Ghz.
It updated successfully, no problems at all... It runs at the same temperature as before...

Update doesn't work here on my Mac Pro. I get the flashing, the beep and then the progress indicator pops up for a split second, and the machine reboots without having done the update (the update window comes up again when the Mac is up and running again). Go figure. I will try a manual download instead of using software update and see if it helps.

Update owned my Logitech Mx1000

Gonna try a reboot, but if i have to venture into the mess of cables under my desk, somebody call mountain rescue or something if i'm not back in 12hrs :D

Reboot - no difference. Unplug MX1000 cradle from power - no difference. Plug mouse cradle into USB port on laptop, instead of on hub - works. Pull out - macbook kernel panics on me :(

Not a happy bunny

Sorted it, but only a descent in to the nether regions of my desk to unplug the hub and assorted devices, and put them back in one by one.

As an aside, temperature seems to have gone up by as much as 10ºC, now idling around 58-60ºC. Bah.

^Yeah that seems to be common... My macbook went up 10˚ as well, to about 51˚C.

Fans are the same though.. is that a good thing?
