Yeah, I would like to buy one in the future. I think they will last a lot of years with Windows once Mac run out of updates.Am I the only one who likes those machines? And I bought mine on eBay close to three years after buying an M1 Max 16"...
Maybe my expectations were low given all the hate for these machines, but I haven't really been disappointed by mine.
Assuredly there will be 2 more years of security updates as well, as usual. I can’t see them doing less than 1 additional year at the least.Frankly, I expected Apple to drop all intel support with Sequoia, but I do have to say it’s nice they didn’t. Might squeeze an extra year out of my 16” 2019. Still a great machine.
Except completely unsupported thanks to Microsoft's TPM 2.0 requirement, etc, unless there's a way to enable the on-processor TPM with Apple's UEFI firmware...Yeah, I would like to buy one in the future. I think they will last a lot of years with Windows once Mac run out of updates.
To your point apple has started to limit its own apps compatibility quicker in recent years. It used to be closer the overall OS support (3 years). But for about 6 months now you couldn’t even use or download the Apple Store app on iOS if you were below 17. Even trying to download through purchased wouldn’t work.Security updates don't guarantee compatibility with apps from Apple and third-party developers, especially following a major architecture change. If they did this would be a non-issue.
I really, really want the 2020 iMac 27 . Need to speed up grabbing one it appears. That's my view too. When I bought my 2020 iMac roughly the week that the Mac studio came out, I was expecting macOS "16" (now 26) to drop Intel support. So I get an extra year...
I actually got absurdly lucky. My 2019 16" MacBook Pro that I bought on eBay last year, supported. My 2020 27" iMac, supported. And my mom's 2020 4TB 13" (the one that was the saddest - the SSD on her late 2013 failed, pandemic meant it couldn't be easily replaced, and we all knew the ARM machines were coming but she couldn't wait), supported.
I strongly believe most of the things that stop Intel Macs GUI from being as fast as Apple Silicon can be is all down to limitations imposed by Apple artificially. Nothing about those chips would prevent windows from loading any faster than they do now. But Apple has worked on replacing intel for so long that they just kept it that slow on purpose to have a clear reason to upgrade it in the off chance they couldn't make the chips drastically faster.
they’ve been trimming this a bit, to 2 with some of their apps.Apple itself supports the last three versions of macOS. Once macOS 26 is released, macOS 13 will no longer be supported.
Shipping alone is more than $20. Unless you can find one locally but good luck with that! Can’t wait to get a 2019 Mac Pro fully loaded for $150 in 8 years. 2013 models have hit $100 recently and 2006 Mac Pro and 2005 G5 PPC are $20![]()
I've been tempted to get a trash can Mac Pro, but honestly, what would its purpose be? It's too new for the retro fleet, too old to be useful as a modern machine, it'd just be a decorative object. Can’t wait to get a 2019 Mac Pro fully loaded for $150 in 8 years. 2013 models have hit $100 recently and 2006 Mac Pro and 2005 G5 PPC are $20![]()
Yes. They apparently announced a plan to remove most Rosetta 2 functionality after macOS 27 though.Does Tahoe still have Rosetta ii?
I remember when they first came out and wanting one. Maybe that's good enough of a reasonI've been tempted to get a trash can Mac Pro, but honestly, what would its purpose be? It's too new for the retro fleet, too old to be useful as a modern machine, it'd just be a decorative object.
I think the 5,1 has held its value the best...
I picked one up cheap last year… you’re right, it’s kinda just a nice decoration (especially since one of the GPUs failed shortly after I got it lol)I've been tempted to get a trash can Mac Pro, but honestly, what would its purpose be? I have had such bad luck with hardware failures on my vintage machines. Just had to replace the PSU on the 5,1, and I consider myself lucky - I gambled on a power supply and was right, but there was a good chance it was the backplane that was fried.I picked one up cheap last year… you’re right, it’s kinda just a nice decoration (especially since one of the GPUs failed shortly after I got it lol)
It is a lovely object though 😅
Where did you hear that?Yes. They apparently announced a plan to remove most Rosetta 2 functionality after macOS 27 though.
Saw it in an article on Ars Technica, I think. I wonder if it's going to be on the front page here soon.Where did you hear that?
I guess it means that is dead for anything other than Sequoia or Tahoe.I wonder what this means for OCLP?
Ah yep, found it. I haven't read it yet, but it seems a bit soon to me.Saw it in an article on Ars Technica, I think. I wonder if it's going to be on the front page here soon.
Don't care.Don’t care. Still running Monterey on my 2020 Intel iMac.
As I posted earlier, at this point, I think everybody who hasn't recompiled their software for ARM, except maybe on the game side, basically never will until Apple forces their hand. If Rosetta 2 exists until 2031, those guys would still be shipping Intel software in 2031.Ah yep, found it. I haven't read it yet, but it seems a bit soon to me.
