Am I the only one who likes those machines? And I bought mine on eBay close to three years after buying an M1 Max 16"...

Maybe my expectations were low given all the hate for these machines, but I haven't really been disappointed by mine.
Yeah, I would like to buy one in the future. I think they will last a lot of years with Windows once Mac run out of updates.

Yoy can even use Big Sur. Chrome and Firefox support it and yeah, maybe you need an old version of Office and another programs but if the Mac works fine for you, you shouldn't upgrade it

Well I always thought that Apple would announce when Intel Macs would not be upgraded a year in advance and now we know when that will happen.

Frankly, I expected Apple to drop all intel support with Sequoia, but I do have to say it’s nice they didn’t. Might squeeze an extra year out of my 16” 2019. Still a great machine.
Assuredly there will be 2 more years of security updates as well, as usual. I can’t see them doing less than 1 additional year at the least.

Except completely unsupported thanks to Microsoft's TPM 2.0 requirement, etc, unless there's a way to enable the on-processor TPM with Apple's UEFI firmware...

Security updates don't guarantee compatibility with apps from Apple and third-party developers, especially following a major architecture change. If they did this would be a non-issue.
To your point apple has started to limit its own apps compatibility quicker in recent years. It used to be closer the overall OS support (3 years). But for about 6 months now you couldn’t even use or download the Apple Store app on iOS if you were below 17. Even trying to download through purchased wouldn’t work.

Which was wild to me cause it’s basically turning away customers if they weren’t on a recent software update lol

That's my view too. When I bought my 2020 iMac roughly the week that the Mac studio came out, I was expecting macOS "16" (now 26) to drop Intel support. So I get an extra year...

I actually got absurdly lucky. My 2019 16" MacBook Pro that I bought on eBay last year, supported. My 2020 27" iMac, supported. And my mom's 2020 4TB 13" (the one that was the saddest - the SSD on her late 2013 failed, pandemic meant it couldn't be easily replaced, and we all knew the ARM machines were coming but she couldn't wait), supported.
I really, really want the 2020 iMac 27 . Need to speed up grabbing one it appears.

I strongly believe most of the things that stop Intel Macs GUI from being as fast as Apple Silicon can be is all down to limitations imposed by Apple artificially. Nothing about those chips would prevent windows from loading any faster than they do now. But Apple has worked on replacing intel for so long that they just kept it that slow on purpose to have a clear reason to upgrade it in the off chance they couldn't make the chips drastically faster.

A lot of it is the GPU. I remember my 2018 MBP (15 inch, 560X) had a dedicated GPU which was slower than the iGPU in the base M1. The integrated UHD630 was painful for just basic usage - couldn't handle all the pixels it was tasked with.

I'm actually really glad they announced this in advance. Writing's on the wall for Intel. And I'm writing that from an Intel machine.

Can’t wait to get a 2019 Mac Pro fully loaded for $150 in 8 years. 2013 models have hit $100 recently and 2006 Mac Pro and 2005 G5 PPC are $20 :p

I've been tempted to get a trash can Mac Pro, but honestly, what would its purpose be? It's too new for the retro fleet, too old to be useful as a modern machine, it'd just be a decorative object.

I think the 5,1 has held its value the best...

I remember when they first came out and wanting one. Maybe that's good enough of a reason ;)

I picked one up cheap last year… you’re right, it’s kinda just a nice decoration (especially since one of the GPUs failed shortly after I got it lol)

It is a lovely object though 😅

I have had such bad luck with hardware failures on my vintage machines. Just had to replace the PSU on the 5,1, and I consider myself lucky - I gambled on a power supply and was right, but there was a good chance it was the backplane that was fried.

And my two G4s... yes... two G4s, I bought a second one I thought would be healthier than the first, but the second has PSU problems and I don't know how to fix it short of spending insane money to send it to that dude in Texas.

And this is a Mac forum so let's not talk about my attempts at finding a retro DOS/Win3.1/etc box.

So... I probably shouldn't get more decorations that will fail.

Where did you hear that?
Saw it in an article on Ars Technica, I think. I wonder if it's going to be on the front page here soon.

Apparently somebody at WWDC gave a big briefing on platforms and mentioned that. macOS 28, Rosetta 2 limited to some Intel-only game libraries and maybe a few other things.

Ah yep, found it. I haven't read it yet, but it seems a bit soon to me.
As I posted earlier, at this point, I think everybody who hasn't recompiled their software for ARM, except maybe on the game side, basically never will until Apple forces their hand. If Rosetta 2 exists until 2031, those guys would still be shipping Intel software in 2031.
