So you didn't see the GUNDAM-themed router from ASUS yet?

But hold on! There is a whole series... 😮😄

And here is the black version AX5400 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 Gaming Router (RT-AX82U) with Gundam Tumbler:

Oh and what about the ASUS ROG wireless AX11000 tri-band Wi-Fi 6 gaming router?

Say what you will about the AX11000’s looks, it’s the most solid single-access point solution I’ve ever used in my life that hasn't given me so much as even a moment of trouble. I just hide my networking gear out of sight and now I don’t have to look at it!

After 15+ years of using (some good, and some not very good) Netgear routers, my only regret is not making the switch sooner. Netgear’s more recent high-end options are so bugged out and frequently nonfunctional it should be criminal.

i have a wifi 6 router (asus ax86u running merlin) and its probably overkill for my uses so im in no rush for 6E or even WiFi 7. when my old router died i was quite happy to get a WiFi 5 again but the 6 model was cheaper so why not?

had this router for about 2 years now. so at least its good that WiFi 6/E will be the best option for another 2-3 years. honestly WiFi 6E is not a huge upgrade. its nice to have 6GHz but mostly useless and still quite expensive! even if WiFi 7 isnt here until 24/25 its going to take a while for it to become affordable to most people.

I choose ethernet. Always superior stability & speed.
The vast majority of electronics are not compatible with ethernet. But consumers should have the option of both. I am personally increasingly disappointed at how copper/RJ45 10GbE at the enthusiast level has been underutilized and so often completely absent on most of these (hideous) routers.

A mix of 6GHz Wi-Fi + 10GbE would be the ultimate home-network setup, but has been out of reach for consumers for far too long.

Consumers don’t care and don’t need more than 1 gbps transfer rate. This will fizzle and be irrelevant.
Dumb take.

  1. Real-world speeds never reach published speeds because of the nature of WiFi protocol + RF environment.
  2. The highest published speeds typically require clients with 3 or 4x radios. iOS devices don't have that, and nor do any current macs.
  3. Available bandwidth drops as neighbors upgrade to devices that use new spectrum. 6E devices have access to new frequency bands.
  4. In some markets (not the US) >1Gbps home connections are affordable
There is certainly a benefit to 6e.

Introducing WiFi 7 (most likely the 802.11be standard) is one thing. But FINDING a device that supports it is quite something else (I don't think Qualcomm will have a radio modem chip that supports 802.11be until 2025).

I actually own the router in the picture. Its a Netgear RAXE300 Wifi 6E router. Pretty much their standard router design for their top end routers for the last six years or so.

???

ethernet dongles exist and function on just about anything.

many non-apple laptops are still shipping with ethernet ports.

all desktop motherboards are definitely shipping with ethernet ports.

"most" is absolutely not true. and "it's all mobile" is factually incorrect.
What if no Ethernet is available?

5. Both new and existing markets will move to take advantage of new opportunities presented by these advancements in technology. That is inevitable.
Also, if the average ISPs in the USA were as amazing as they are in other parts of the world, more advanced wireless technology would be all that more beneficial. I think most of us have become all too accustomed to overpaying for abysmal internet service only because we have no other choice... irrelevant though if you have high home-network demands.

you totally missed the memo. most consumers are all on wifi. now more than ever. phones, laptops and tablets, all wifi. most console users just use wifi now too.
since wifi ac/ax it's become 'almost' as reliable as ethernet.
i would still use ethernet when available, but it's become easier to troubleshoot wifi than wired connections too.

I'm all for hardwired ethernet. But tablets, smart wearables, and smartphones do not have built-in ethernet which now does indeed comprise of most internet-capable consumer electronics. Have you seen how many smartphones alone Samsung and Apple shipped last year?

No one is using an RJ45 dongle with their smartphone 🤣

i wonder if the mbp m2 will support 6e,or at the very least 3*3 mimo.
would bet on 6E, however sadly it seems they are trying to cut back where they can. i had the mbp 2011 13" which was the first macbook with 3x3 mimo, and i think they have gone back to 2x2 with all 2020 models onwards

yep exactly this. yes i know you can use a dongle for your iphone/ipad etc but only place i've seen this is at stores using an ipad as a POS. who/why would anyone else do this 🤣

No idea.

I have a Time Capsule and an airport extreme in my house and I’m not switching. I have this router from my ISP (Frontier) here but only using it as a modem, essentially.

Time Capsules are just so much easier to configure and create extensions with. Also, third party devices kept giving me the “we need to erase all your backups now” error when using time machine.
Time Capsule was the Old Way. iCloud continuous subscription stream of your dollars$$$ -----------> to Apple executives laughing all the way to the Airport to hop their private jet to their giant ocean going yaught to hang out in paradise is the New Way.

I'm a consumer and have a 1 gig home network. Transferring large files @ 100 megabytes per second is slow. Even slower via wifi.
The elephant in the room is 802.11ac can already do 1.3 gbps. Wifi 6 is pointless for most home networks with 6e and 7 being laughably ridiculous.

It gets worse when you factor in the anemic upload speeds most people have to the internet.

I didn't say I don't like the look of the ASUS routers 😊
And they are very solid build quality and have a stable signal.
