Apple should be quite happy about this as it gives them someone to blame for not getting into 5G in 2019… something they probably didn't want to do anyway. There was no rush for getting into 4G and 5G shouldn't be any different.

I swear here in the UK I’ve only started getting solid 4G (LTE) couple of years ago. So no need for 5G at all. At all like. It will be yeeeeeaars until it’s solid.

The new Samsung S10 phones are really dope and priced well also. Apple, OnePlus, Google need to watch out.

True, even now ocassionally I see it slip back to 3G in some locations.

5G is useless for now. 4G coverage just caught up and 5G is almost non existant so why do people think this is a big selling point is beyond me. 2 years (at least) useless.
Also, 4G is actually very fast so most people won't care about 5G that much. There are other important things when upgrading - 5G is definitely not one of them :)

Just like for the last 10 years. Every week another iPhone killer.

The bigger problem isn't that networks aren't ready yet, it's that we won't have a 5G-capable iPhone until late 2020. At least if we had one in late 2019, it would be "future-proof" in that sense. But since we don't, I can see a lot of people waiting for the 2020 model. Why spend $1,000+ dollars on a phone that won't be able to connect to 5G a year later?

I would like to see how Intel compares to Qualcomm. In the meantime, it will be some time before 5G will be up and fully running. The carriers still need to improve and increase coverage and even with the current 4G, the signal and performance varies depending on where you are at.

1. iPhone users won't have 5G anywhere in the world
2. People who buy iPhone in 2019 and most of 2020 won't have 5G for as long as they keep their phones (i.e. long after 5G is available everywhere)

Just like with other new tech (LTE, OLED, NFC, USB-C, wireless charging etc.) Apple customers get it last and sometimes years after others.
And Samsung Galaxy 10 users will have 5G in :
  • Not that many places
Not that many places vs zero doesn’t seem like a big difference, and only in the eyes of spec nerds will this matter. Seen this before every, single year.

So, are you buying iPhone XI? Is anyone buying it? Or people are still going to stick with iPhone SE?

Went outside and stood at the highest point on my property and registered this....I'd like 3G please.

I do think it's funny that Intel repeatedly pushes things back from shipping.

I just bought an S-10+. I still won't have 5G because I did not want to order the 5G capable model which will be very large and very heavy and have goodness knows what issues to work out before it's as smooth as the regular S-10's.

2020 looks to be a good year for phones to get that capability. Right now it's all I can do to get decent 4G most places.

reports that Intel has confirmed that it does not expect their 5G chips to be in consumer products until 2020.
Intel's timeline is tied closely with Apple's product plans due to Apple's reliance on Intel chips for their iPhone modems.

Apple's waiting until 2020 to deliver 5G iPhones doesn't come as a surprise as previous rumors have said the same. This statement by Intel, however, does seem to confirm some of those previous.

Smartphones - especially Huawei - will have 5G chips on them this year, mostly from QCOM.

The network infrastructure to be able to use these phones at current (4G) level will be in place by 2025 … maybe!:p

That’s my opinion also is that 2020 will be critical mass for 5G. Some (or many) phones will have released 5g by sept 2020. If apple has a half-baked 5g solution they deserve the ridicule that will invariably be dished out.

what is interesting in the Qualcomm - apple story is that it does seem that Qualcomm is years ahead technically of any competitor. its engineers appear to be the best in the world in their field of expertise. with a huge lead that Intel hasn't been able to overcome in 4 years.

it also appears that Qualcomm has a bunch of idiots managing its business section.

at the same time its likely that apple is being typically apple and tries, usually successfully (including and especially Jobs time) to bully its way around.

wireless tech engineering isnt going away as a needed integral part of a wireless world.

why wouldn't apple make a move to buy Qualcomm?

Seeing how HD video can easily be streamed at 25mbps, (via current LTE) I don't see the rush to want a phone that support 5G right now, outside of tech junkies who want to brag they have the latest but can't make full use of it. And even if it were possible right now, would it really be noticed outside of speed tests? I doubt it.
