Sure. But the issue is:- who’s going to buy a phone in 2019 that doesn’t support 5G, when in 2020 it will be largely up and running?

Anyone who buys a phone to keep for a number of years will likely hold out till the 5G model if they can.

People who upgrade every year won’t be affected, but as we’ve seen, that’s becoming less of the market.

I’m in that situation, still on a 6Plus. But won’t be buying another non-5G phone that’s for sure.

And this is a problem because?

There is going to be very little actual service coverage in 2019. Not to mention that the 5G chips are massive power drains.

I'm more than happy to wait until 2020 to get a 5G iPhone. This is a non-issue in my mind. I'd like to see continued gains in framework development for App devs, more CPU/GPU power, and better battery life for the 2019 phones.

iPhones come out in what October, right? .. so we are talking end of 2019, beginning of 2020 time frame. If you wait another year, that will be towards 2021.

The vast majority of phones sold in 2019 will not support 5G, and 5G coverage will still be spotty in 2020. Remember that the first public LTE network was launched in 2009, and only now are we seeing the full potential of the technology with good coverage and LTE-Advanced.

I just got a xs max at launch and it’s already overkill for my needs considering all I do is reddit and watch some YouTube.

Honestly, most of you people that have new phones like me, couldn’t we be just as happy on an iPhone 7 Plus from like 2 years ago? There are some nice little things here and there, but my daily life hasn’t changed having a newer phone one bit. I still do everything the same. I could have easily saved $1200 and just kept my iPhone 7 until it died

They could do this with phones too by removing 4G and putting in 5G :D

This won’t happen for a very long time, would be silly for Apple to do.

5G will most likely never have as wide of coverage as 4G, and there will be many people still using 4G for a long time to come.

1. iPhone users won't have 5G anywhere in the world
2. People who buy iPhone in 2019 and most of 2020 won't have 5G for as long as they keep their phones (i.e. long after 5G is available everywhere)

Just like with other new tech (LTE, OLED, NFC, USB-C, wireless charging etc.) Apple customers get it last and sometimes years after others.
1. Most Android users won’t either.
2. People who buy Android phones in 2019 and 2020, other than carrier specific 5G flagships, won’t have 5G for as long as they keep their phones either.

So what’s your point?

Which carriers around the world will have wide coverage of 5G by 2020? Do tell.

5G technology by itself limits its coverage.

People that understand what 5G is most likely will not hold out for a 5G iPhone if they otherwise need or want a new iPhone.

5G is not a replacement for LTE, and people will be still using LTE for a very long time regardless if their phones are 5G capable.

4G coverage has not even reached 3G coverage in many markets.

5G will only be covering dense urban areas, and that is by design due to its limited range. 4G rollouts will still continue as carriers are still switching from 2G to 3G/4G.

The reality is, I will still be using my 2017 iPhone X in 2020 possibly 2021. So, the possibility of this impacting Apple negatively is very little. Sure, it matters to the Urkles of the Internet, but the probably don't even count as a percentage in the scheme of things. When you take into account the fact that I am sitting across from someone right now how just replaced the broken screen on his iPhone 5s. The tonne load of iPhone 6, 6s, 7 models I still see in use suggest not a lot of people care how theoretically fast your phones network is with exception to a select few.

MKBHD mentioned the other day during his Samsung Galaxy 10 overview, the maxed out Plus model supports up to 12 GBs of RAM. He asked, is that something people actually discuss with each other, my phone has this amount of RAM? If its one thing I thought the mobile revolution was going to do was get us over the feeds and speeds stuff.

But even Apple seems to be getting trapped into it with the latest iPad Pro's measuring up to MacBook Pros. The practicality is whats missing, when Steve Jobs introduced the Retina display, you understood the benefit of it immediately, better screen meant you can read on your device longer and pictures looked better. 3G network was faster than 2G, 4G meant I could update my apps and do a video call over cellular.

But I have yet to see what 5G is gonna do to make the smartphone any better than it already is, at least not yet. The practical applications is likely at least a few years away after launch, which means, we probably won't realise the benefits until around 2025 or 2026.

5G is going to do alot for the whole world :) its 100 times faster than 4G and much lower latency. The phone get better faster internet than cabled fiber internet for homes..

LOL. 5G faster than fiber?
Even the Max theoretical 5G speed is not close to what fiber can deliver. 5G max theoretical speed is just 20Gb/s. While older fiber tech can already reach 100Gb/s per channel a decade ago.

Basically what I posted.

Many people think that 5G is the new LTE, but as you pointed out, the technological limitations of 5G will make the roll out very slow and the coverage will most likely never be like LTE coverage.

So, iPhones will still be using LTE for many, many years.

Didn't you make my point?
1. All iPhone users vs most Android users
2. Some Android users vs all iPhone users
It sure looks like it's better to be Android user, isn't it? They at least have a choice while iPhone users are hopelessly stuck with outdated tech and desperately trying to rationalize why this is a good thing.

I had the Verizon HTC thunderbolt LTE when it came out. One of the worst battery life I have ever experienced.

5G needs to mature for it to be really worth it.

The best scenario for Apple is that in 2020 they will use first generation Intel 5G chip. So iPhone users will go through the same pains just one year later. Besides Intel first 5G modem is likely going to be worse than Qualcomm's one.

5G has to be the most overhyped, non-factor tech in years. Reception will NEVER be good, there is zero benefit to gigabit on phones, and higher power consumption will be a drag. I think the only reason it is being pushed so hard is because there is nothing else for mobile operators to market. It will make no significant difference in anyone’s daily life and it will be too unreliable for anything critical.

I will be using this iPhone Xr for as long as Apple supports it with iOS updates - unless it slips through my fingers at some point - wether Apple get's a 5G chip in their phones next year, the year after next year or in 2023 is rather inconsequential to me.

The original iPhone didn't have 3G, the 4S didn't have LTE...

I don't even know what 5G is supposed to be helping us achieve with our phones?

5G is going to do a lot for the whole world. The phone get better faster internet than cabled fiber internet for homes..

No, it won't!

True, most people on earth with high-speed broadband do not have the max that fiber optic does provide now; most people on earth with 5G service will not have full coverage either, the nature of the beast.

Guess the square meters/feet coverage of each 4G LTE cell-tower is compared to each 5G tower!

The simple answer - the 5G service needs a tower every street corner! Even if the provider is capable of erecting the towers, the practical difficulties of such towers existing is near nil.

I can wait. As much as carriers and smartphone vendors want us to buy into the ‘5G is here’ hype the infrastructure for widespread adoption just won’t be here for some time
But if you buy a new phone you want it to last some years. And then 5G will be there.

Apple Inc, will be more than a year behind rivals in delivering a device that uses the faster networks.

Name me a devices that has Full 5G, not just mmWave, which is what the X50 support. And Qualcomm X55 was only just announced, unlikely to be available until end of 2019 of even early to mid 2020.

The amount of idiotic news from the Internet doesn't make the world better informed, merely trying to spin their viewpoint to get what they want, in this case early 5G iPhone.
