I've always loved the QS for it's design, but the reality is that it only allows 1.5GB of ram max. All the G4s prior to it can support a full 2GB. And as anyone who's heard about my own QS story can attest, the beauty of the QS is skin deep.
Fair points, but you forgot about the Yikes, which can only hold 1GB. And 1.5GB, or even 1GB is plenty for OS 8 or 9.

And you are here as well.

See? Heed the warning! ;)
I was not informed of this when I started, I want my money back! xD
You're just getting warmed up. :D On a serious note, just from a perspective of space savings, focusing ones collection on portables makes great sense to me. I love desk tops and early AIOs but man, the space thing is a bonafide pain in the buttocks not to mention what it can do to ones relationships.
I have a feeling any relationships I'm gonna get into would be pretty cool with and possibly get some enjoyment from my collection of Macs ;)

I know what you mean though, and that is a good idea.

Unless you have a DA case swap like mine ;)

Use this site to check alongside any potential buys you might find - depending on which direction you want to go in, there are a few machines that can boot all three - OS9, Tiger and Leopard.

I still have almost all of the ones listed in my signature and almost all of them still work
think a G4 tower, like the MDD would be a good option.

I was just looking at my signature, and it hasn't been updated. Two dumpster finds, a G4 MDD, and a Mid-2011 27" iMac.

The MDD is working perfectly as far as I can tell, and the iMac had a fried GPU, which I baked in the oven and it works great now. It ended up being a top of the line, BTO iMac for the Mid-2011's.

I ended up giving it away though. I still have the MDD, and I plan on updating to SSDs sometimes in the future.

What about a G4 Mac Mini? I realize they weren't made to run OS 9, but they have been convinced to run it, they don't take up too much space, and while not the most powerful, they should be able to run most of the older software. And they tend to be cheaper than most of the systems that have so far been listed, as much as I'd also want something more impressive.

I've been eyeing one as a nice small OS 9 device, myself, actual

Honestly, I would probably go for an iBook or PowerBook of some sort. Small, portable, easy to stick somewhere when you’re not using it, less likely to have the spouse/SO yell at you for it. That’s why I tend to focus most of my collecting on laptops! Plus then you don’t have to deal with external bits like monitors, keyboards, mice, etc, but they’re still options should you choose to use them :)

I agree with this. As much as I keep eyeing G5s, I have nowhere to put one. I have about 12 laptops though all over the place.

Wow lot of good and quick replies! Many thanks to everyone. Sounds like some sort of PowerMac G4 tower is the move. I'll see what I can find on eBay or craigslist.
Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are a good place to start, if you want an iMac or a G4 tower , shipping can be pricey for them.

The Mini and some of the iBook G4's can be had on the cheap off Ebay and not set you back so much in shipping, while not officially supporting OS 9, it's pretty easy to get that booting on them if you just want to toy with it.

Agreed. As much as the notion of shacking up with someone who is into & collects old tech as an attainable goal, this is a fantasy built upon a mythical creature that simply does not exist!:D

portables Are the perverbial fig leaf. Simply put, they can be put away creating the illusion of nothingness.

I already have a hard enough time explaining the howling sparc64 servers in the basement. :D

My wife and I made a deal years ago when we started living together and she learned of my... proclivities. So long as they can fit in the small closet in our office, and we aren’t using any for furniture, we’re good.

I also have a massive classroom at the middle school that I teach at and parts of the collection live there. Out of sight, out of mind for her I suppose...

I’ve always had a home studio/Music/computer mancave since day one, so as long as my “stuff” stays in my room or other manly spaces like the shed & garage, we’re good. Like yours, out of sight, out of mind.

Mind you this doesn’t stop the eye rolls :p

When she describes my hobby to other people, it usually goes along the lines of “It could be drugs, it could be gambling, I could be other women. As far as vices to spend money on go, this one is cheap and tolerable.”

Up until 2018 my wife and I have always rented houses, typically 3-4 bedrooms (for two of us). That worked for both of us. There was her room, my 'study' and then there was 'our' room - in which she got all the closet space. When my son came along things changed. They changed even more when my daughter came along.

Today it's imbalanced. She doesn't have any room to entirely claim as hers, I have the garage and one wall of the living room. Which is why, when my son leaves (eventually) she gets his room first while I've got to wait to get my daughter's room.

Eventually we'll be back to 'normal' and all my stuff won't be subject to the temp variations between summer and winter in Phoenix because of the giant metal door covering one wall of the garage..

My wife used to shake her head and give me the eye rolls. Then one day as I was explaining that a new Mac arrived she looked like she had gotten sudden insight. She says to me 'So, this is kind of like me and my purses?' (she has a LOT of purses). Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I said 'Yes, exactly like that'. She doesn't get it, but she doesn't have to. Just like her thing, I have mine and that's enough.

She's hasn't complained since - just like I don't complain (and never have) about her purses.

If you want a portable, a titanium powerbook like a 3,2 is cool but they’re getting pricey these days.
Or an original 17in as they run OS9 nicely. :)

Where do I connect the five other monitors on a laptop?! :D

PPC: DualHead2Go (2) + VTBook+DualHead2Go (2) + ScreenRecycler (1)

Intel: internal GPU (1) + external GPU (4)

I've owned a few A1013's (the original 17" you refer to) and I own one now. I've never known them to boot OS9. Unless you're meaning the project that developed later to run OS9 on unsupported Macs?

In my view there are two models that make sense. A Powerbook G4 with Radeon GPU (PowerBook5.4 to PowerBook5.9) or an air-cooled PCIe PowerMac G5. Radeon GPU is better if you want to install Linux, too.

Assuming the following about OP's first post:

A Mac to run OS9

OP has no experience in getting OS9 onto an unsupported system

How does your recommendation of Macs that cannot natively run OS9 make sense?
