I guess this is where they start to offer features to prop up the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max over the iPhone 15. Sad.

Really how hard would it be to use a newer WiFi chip on all the iPhone 15 models?
Just imagine if they do this after switching to in-house chips, and presumably saving those precious pennies...

Then they'll really have no excuse.

Don’t want to sound like a sheep, but considering how long Wi-Fi versions are supported, this isn’t really a big deal. The every day people who order the non-Pro versions won’t notice. Wi-Fi 6 will be supported long before the phone dies or the user upgrades.
And this way Apple has a better explanation for lowballing people when they try to exchange it 🥁

Curious what one would be doing on an iPhone that needs the speed afforded by WIFI 6E over WIFI 6? I have Gigabit internet at home with WIFI6 and my iPhone 13 PM can't even use all the bandwidth.

Remember it's not only about speed. Latency and spectral congestion are additional factors in the overall experience of connecting to and using a Wi-Fi network. 6E can help in these respects, especially for those in crowded locations.

6E adds 7 additional channels. 6 still shares channels with 4 and 5. Less interference, better speed, better latency, etc. will all come with 6E.

Sticking this behind a "pro" model phone shows they really don't have much innovation left to differentiate the products.

There is really no reason to not be using the latest standard in all products. Things like moving the Homepod gen2 back to WiFi 4 is just stupid.

Yup, all they need to do now is add a Home Button w/ TouchID, and I'll throw them all my money for a Pro.

I'm mostly kidding, of course, that ship has sadly sailed.

But, could you imagine how many of the Home Button haters on here would act like it was the best thing ever if Apple did make a Home Button w/ TouchID a Pro exclusive on the 16?

:)

Yea but I'd prefer Touch on Power and having it and FaceID as options

Just looking at the purported iPhone 15 Pro technical schematic in question. It indicates there are 10 separate antennas. Wow, that seems like a lot! I know nothing about antenna technology. Is anyone else surprised?

As expected.

People who buy expensive pro phones are more likely to get new wifi routers which support the 6E spec.

Most people won't know or care and will be using routers that support 6, so why provide this on the regular iPhone and eat into your margin per unit? (if you're Apple).

(Obviously it's different for a Mac, which you'd expect to keep for way longer, so you'd expect it to support the latest specs).

They should add it to all devices but I guess this is Apple's way to squeeze money out people and cover up that they don't know WTF to do with the iPhone anymore.

That said, WiFi 6E can get away with being a Pro/Ultra feature until late 2024. Most people haven't even moved to WiFi 6 yet nevermind 6E. I have a WiFi 6 router but don't see any point in moving to 6E. To be honest, I'd be fine on my old AC (WiFi 5) router but went with a 6 "just because". I paid £240 for my router and most people wouldn't pay any kind of money for a router when their ISP issued hardware is an all in 1 modem/router.

My next router will probably be a WiFi 7 one or maybe even "WiFi 7E". I don't see the point in needing these "better" WiFi standards unless you have a LOT of devices that you actually use daily or if you are using the hardware in large spaces with hundreds/thousands of people.

No.

Antennas aren't just for WiFi. How do you think Bluetooth, NFC, Cellular, etc work?

I agree that probably most people expect to keep a laptop around longer than a phone. That said, phones are so capable now that many hold on to them for 4 years or more. Unless it's a super-budget device (arguably only Apple's iPhone SE comes even close to fitting that description), every modern device (including iPhones) should include modern networking technology.

Is it just me or does the existence of the “Pro” model backfire for other people, too?

Its high price tag makes it completely uninteresting. And it’s existence makes the other iPhone lame by comparison and absolutely not worth getting.

So you end up just not buying an iPhone at all.

IDK, I don’t feel that way about the Mac lineup. I was fine with it when it was just a Plus and regular iPhone. But the “Pro” iPhones really rub me the wrong way. They just make the entire iPhone brand seem icky.

so it looks like the ‘Pro’ iPhones are going to be the hardware guinea pigs from now on. Fine by me. First adopters pay the price by being hardware beta testers. Better to wait a generation to get a more refined product

Agreed, this isn't part of the SOC and is an active choice by Apple management. Seems like mostly so they can just use last years board from the Pro almost intact.

Really going to the Pro's being the new iPhone and the regular iPhone is just last year's Pro (iPhone) even beyond the SOC. Bummer for everyone that wasn't forking over $1k+ for a new phone.

That makes no sense.

I can get 5G speeds that are significantly faster than what my home internet can get.

I know you're trying to be funny but you can't even begin to compare WiFi to cellular speeds. I have a WiFi 6 router and my internet never goes over 280Mb/s. My 12 Pro Max on 5G can do 500Mb/s easily. 6G cellular speeds will likely be 1Gb/s+

5G here is getting better "by the day" but it's still quite spotty. I can get 50Mb/s in one area and 500MB/s in another. On 4G i never got anymore than 30-40Mb/s.

Now if only cellular had no data caps, better coverage, and more modems. I'm paying £53/month for 280Mb/s and my phone data is only £8/month.

Last I recall, we were told 5G would be like magic on the cellular side but I see no improvement. Hope there are better results with WiFi.
