original iPhone?

Does this imply that AT&T tethering will only work with iPhone OS 4.0?

The point being... iPhone OS 4.0 doesn't work on the original iPhone.

Nice. This will be a nice savings over the $60 a month I pay them right now for a USB data card.

Not sure how much this will help them compete against Verizon, though - doesn't Verizon offer free tethering on the Pre and maybe a few other phones?

that's nice. Now how about free mobile hotspot a la verizon and the pre plus? First time another provider and handset have made me seriously jealous.

I'll believe it when I see it. Given AT&T's track record, I won't keep my hopes up.

I really don't think this is real. I know I'm a member of the devs. Have been for almost 10 years. I know I have an almost new iPhone 3GS. I know it's on the AT&T network and I know these pics are real.

Somethings wrong somewhere.

It is real. Reset your network settings. It will show up once you reboot.

Is it though? It's not automatic. I want the tethering that Apple has built into the iPhone because it's so seamless.

It won't be automatic either (when AT&T legitimately allows for tethering)... You'll still have to go into Settings>General>Network>Internet Tethering. We can already do that right now with a jailbreak...

yea..... it pretty much is seamless. Once you set it up on your iPhone the first time, all you have to do is flip a switch when you want to make a wifi hotspot..

The original iPhone only works on the EDGE network. Not worth it to Apple to support tethering on an EDGE-only phone.

Let it go. The original iPhone is three years old. That's an eternity for smartphones.

If its under $20 per month I'll get it.... (1gb?)

if they try to charge $30... its a joke then...

Seeing how Att's cheapest data connect plan is $35 for 200mb.....

My prediction.....

$30 for 250mb?

is it still possible to tether from the iphone currently? if so can anyone point me to the right direction?

you have to jailbreak your device, and then get 'mywi' from the app store there...its 10 bucks...its awsome. i tether my wifi ipad all the time.

head over to the iphone hacks forum for any q's.

No, I'm fairly certain you just have to do that once. With bluetooth pairing, if a device that it's paired with isn't connected, tethering isn't running, as soon as you try to connect your computer to the internet, the iPhone and your computer connect, and the tethering begins again.

HAHAHA!!! Now that's funny (because it's sooo true!!) !!!!!

AT&T could offer EDGE tethering free just so people get mad and pay for 3G. However in my area the EDGE is usually more reliable than the 3G. (In terms of dropped calls)

I've spend enough money on my Iphone so far. Why cant it be free?
Because AT&T is a corporation, not a non-profit group. Corporations are here to make money. They're not here to make you happy. If they do, it's just incidental.
Anyway, don't you think the data usage of tetherers is going to increase, to the point where it puts a strain on AT&T's network? Don't you think dealing with that strain is going to cost money? Well, AT&T is going to make sure they charge you for that. The question is, how much?
Since I don't take my notebook with me everywhere I go, I don't need to make sure that I always have a connection for my computer. That being said, it'd be nice if they offered something similar to the iPad's plan. One would be a limited amount of data for a relatively low price and an all you can eat plan. If I don't have to sign up for a separate contract, I'd be willing to go official whenever I do need the tethering.
