It could just be that they are adding this type of "help" pop-up for all carriers.
Technically, there are no iPhone-side blocks on tethering in iPhone OS 3.0 for AT&T, it's solely that AT&T's carrier config file says no tethering. (And up to 3.1.1, IIRC, you could load a modified carrier config file for AT&T to allow tethering with *NO* hacking on the iPhone. An iPhone OS (3.1.2?) update just made it so that the iPhone will only install carrier-signed config files, blocking the modified file.
I mean, at the tethering announcement, they announced AT&T as a tethering provider! It's not like Apple has done anything to "hide" it. Just the built-into-the-OS carrier-set block on tethering.
I'm sure that Rodgers customers in Canada will see this, with info appropriate for Rodgers; Orange customers in the UK will see Orange info; etc... It's just that because most iPhone devs are in the U.S., most that see this will see the AT&T version.
Great news for wifi ipad people
Because AT&T is a corporation, not a non-profit group. Corporations are here to make money. They're not here to make you happy. If they do, it's just incidental.
Anyway, don't you think the data usage of tetherers is going to increase, to the point where it puts a strain on AT&T's network? Don't you think dealing with that strain is going to cost money? Well, AT&T is going to make sure they charge you for that. The question is, how much?
Since I don't take my notebook with me everywhere I go, I don't need to make sure that I always have a connection for my computer. That being said, it'd be nice if they offered something similar to the iPad's plan. One would be a limited amount of data for a relatively low price and an all you can eat plan. If I don't have to sign up for a separate contract, I'd be willing to go official whenever I do need the tethering.
Check the ground below you. Hell may just be freezing over
Bend over and find out.How much $$$$$ will it cost?
I do agree that AT&T is in this for the money, but I think a better tiered data plan could work in their advantage, as well. First, sometimes adding features without increased cost to your customers can increase access new customers and retain current ones. Second, I find AT&T data plans to be all or nothing plans. Either pay for use, or unlimited. Nothing in between. This plan seems to take advantage of most of us that are light to medium data users while allowing a small percentage of super users to advantage the system the same cost....
Its really hard to care for the story when I expected this to happen much earlier. Now having an iPhone, and constant wi-fi access wherevery I go, I dont even want to think about tethering on my iPhone.
The focus on much of the technology is driven by a mindset to be "always connected." I think we are becoming too "bothered" for a lack of a better word with social networks. Back in the early days of Macrumors, when I still didn't have an account and just browsed to read it seemed like the posts were focused on Apple's innovation. Now they're all turning to petty scandals that just frankly don't mean much in the end. I'm all for change and technology but sometimes human beings need to take a break from all the surrounding interference.
Are you saying that you can hook your iPhone up to your iPad and use tethering from the iPhone to give the iPad internet?

Bingo.. and I've been running OS 3.0.0 since June of last year .. and happily tethering for $free.99 with no jailbreaks or hacks. Just the Benm.at custom profile install and the inability to upgrade since then.
I've considered upgrading and jailbreaking, but none of the features of the newer ones really trump the greatness that tethering offers me via Apple's slick built in way. Its just too convenient.
Im on 3.1.3 and I'm jailbroken and MyWi does what BenM use to do. It allows for NATIVE tethering in the settings menu and even shows a running bar at the top.
Tethering allows devices such as PCs and Laptops to connect to the internet if you are somewhere without a Wi-Fi Hotspot or Internet at home. You cannot tether a Wi-Fi Only iPad to an iPhone. But you could tether and iPad 3G to a computer, if the OS will allow for it. Sorry to burst anyone's virtual bubble.
Don't do it folks, you will be greeted with fail! It's called miwi. It CAN tether wifi iPad to iPhone. Please see my first post on this topic on page 3.
AT&T really do suck. The rest of the world has enjoyed tethering for a while now.
If Apple really cared about customer quality - as SJ suggests - then Apple would have dumped AT&T long ago.
Imagine if Comcast (or name your cable Internet provider) charged the same way AT&T/Verizon do. You'd pay a separate (full-priced) subscription fee for every home computer you connect to the Internet. You'd also pay a fee to broadcast that Internet connection over a wireless network to your other Internet-ready devices.
Bleh.
I hate wireless carriers.
