Tethering allows devices such as PCs and Laptops to connect to the internet if you are somewhere without a Wi-Fi Hotspot or Internet at home. You cannot tether a Wi-Fi Only iPad to an iPhone. But you could tether and iPad 3G to a computer, if the OS will allow for it. Sorry to burst anyone's virtual bubble.

But you want a work around? Follow these steps...once tethering is available and it just might work.
1. Tether your iPhone to your laptop/computer.
2. Enable your Wireless card in Ad-Hoc Mode.
3. Enable the ability for connection sharing.
4. Connect your Wi-Fi iPad to your Wireless Ad-Hoc Network.

Note: I cannot test those steps as I do not have an iPad or any other device that has a Wi-Fi card to test my theory.

Or you could jailbreak your phone and get MyWi. Turn on it's wifi internet tethering to turn your iPhone into a wifi hotspot, and directly connect your iPad to that today. No waiting and guessing if a hack involving a laptop might work some number of months from now.

I don't want to hi-jack this thread but I do have a question.

I'm traveling overseas from the US to England next month for 8 days. AT&T suggested I get the World Traveller package for $5.99 that lowers the voice rate from $1.29/min to $0.99/min and the Data Global Add-on which starts at $24.99 for 20MB of data.

But, since I'm outside the US can I tether my iphone with my MBP? If so, I may need a lot more than 20MB of data for the time I'm away!

I would recommend against trying to use any kind of data in the UK on AT&T, their data rates are extorniate and you would very quickly exceed your data plan and then you could expect a bill for $1200+. I would recommend you buy a SIM card in the UK (Can be bought at any providers store, which you will see everywhere).

As I said..

Uh, no you wrote, "It is free on Verizon not $30 as Chupa Chupa said". That implies that tethering on all Verizon phones is free, which it's not. It is $30 barring some special program, which right now consists of the slow selling Palm Pre and Pixi. For any phone that people actually want it's extra $.

How??

How would they determine what is regular use data and tethering data?

They are both counted the same way are they not?

There are people who have jailbroken their phones and are not being charged for the service (I assume).

When I was on the phone with AT&T I asked them about my usage and such. They said that last month (April) I used 79,470kb of data. If you average that out on a weekly basis I'm using about 20MB a week.

The rate I was quoted by AT&T for international data roaming in the UK was $0.0195/kb. So given my usage, without the plan I'm looking at a $400 for the 8 days I'm gone whereas the plan lowers it to $24.99.

Furthermore, the customer service rep said both the global voice and data packages are pro-rated by the day. So, if I activate them in the airport on Saturday and then cancel them on the Sunday I return I'll only pay about $6.66 (($24.99 / 30 days)* 8 days of usage) for the data and $1.59 for the voice.

Like I said though, if I can tether that will blow my 20MB weekly iPhone data usage out of the water!

Absolutely CubusX. Most people might just use it a few times here and there. Not everyone is going to tether stream Netflix 24/7.

It doesn't make the iPhone look outdated...just the service provider! By the way, Sprint's 4G isn't true 4G, it is Wi-Max.

I agree ATT is the problem. The bottom lint however is it is holding back the iPhone so they both look like old tech vs the competition. Just like it took 2 years to get mms, it is going to be several years before ATT moves to LTE since they would rather just sit back and suck up the profits from charging people for a data plan that is restricted to only the device.

As for Wimax, i'll wait to judge it based on speed. If it delivers 3 to 6mb DL it will blow away anything ATT has for the next 2years, and that's fine by me. I'll pay LESS and get a hell of a lot more options and services, not to mention a huge improvement in 3G coverage area when I travel. The map doesn't lie. ATT blows on their 3G coverage and I don't see anything compelling with the new iPhone to keep me on ATT. The honeymoon is over, now I'm tired of the ol bitch so to speak lol.

Wimax is not LTE, but it is a step in the right direction, and for me, it's here now, not in 2 years. Not on a overpriced, restrictive carrier. 4G or not, it will give people the option for an unrestricted, uncapped and unlimited option. Don't care about the semantics of it being true 4G or not, it's still better than anything ATT has and will deliver in the next few years.

But will the next iPhone have the capability of becoming a wifi hotspot like the Palm Pre plus??? *that* capability would actually make me get an iPad wifi only. My indecision now is wifi vs. 3G. so how bout that Steve? include a hotspot enabler on the iphone hd and 4.0 software and get over $1000 (new phone and 64gb ipad) of mine. not a bad exchange, if u ask me...

would like to point out that anywhere but the united states you can easily tether today. In fact last week while in Scotland a co-worker plugged his iPhone into my laptop and I enjoyed 3G connection while my US based iPhone sat there like a brick.

so this isn't a new feature to 4.0. We could have it right now if AT&T would pull head from ass.

Yay, another chance to pay AT&T more money. :(

Data plan for iPhone. Data plan for iPad. And yet another plan if you want to access data on your laptop via your iPhone.

Imagine if Comcast (or name your cable Internet provider) charged the same way AT&T/Verizon do. You'd pay a separate (full-priced) subscription fee for every home computer you connect to the Internet. You'd also pay a fee to broadcast that Internet connection over a wireless network to your other Internet-ready devices.

Bleh.

I hate wireless carriers.

That is a bit outrageous but... when I lived in Poland the ISP actually charged more for how many computers you connected to your network. Anything over 2 PC connected and they charged you extra. The work around was buying a router and have it identify any computer under the same MAC address.

I couldn't believe it but was easy enough to fix.

With free tethering from Verizon, I see no real reason to stick with AT&T if they charge for this. I hardly use my data plan as it is, I feel like they are shafting me by requiring me to pay this in addition to the monthly service.

I'm using tethering with "3" in Italy on my iPhone completely free! I'm happy that US users will have this service soon!

yes indeed, with "3" operator in Italy is is even totally free! I just pay 5€ for 3GB/month for iPhone data and theatering is free. Since 1-1,5 years at least already.

Who would want to pay to tether edge?

Well...
  1. I don't want to pay to tether to EDGE. I want it for free :)
  2. But in any case, it's better than nothing. EDGE is faster than an old-school modem, and I've used those before. It's not like the internet lacks all value at slow speeds. It just kinda sucks...

The original iPhone only works on the EDGE network. Not worth it to Apple to support tethering on an EDGE-only phone.

Let it go. The original iPhone is three years old. That's an eternity for smartphones.

Well, here's the thing. If I do let go my old school iPhone (and it's not the cost of the new phone that's stopping me, it is the cost of the new plan), the way I would do it would be to sell it to someone else. I think I could get at least $85 for it, maybe more.

So what is that person going to do? (That's a rhetorical question: what they're going to do is not tether, I guess.) There are millions of original iPhones out there, and other than the few that break, they don't go away. They just get sold to other people.

New Build - X-Code

I've read a couple of folks who say they don't have the option in the new build, you have to download the new version of the SDK and authorize the phone for development in X-Code again or you won't see it, I ran into the same issue.

Just as a helpful note

You are still on AT&T even though you are "borrowing" another companies network. I don't think you will be able to tether. Not to mention, just because you could tether like you are wanting, doesn't mean you have to. So no, if you CAN tether, that will not blow your 20MB weekly iPhone data usage out of the water, if you CHOOSE to tether, that will.

they'll probably charge some ridiculous amount for it.. and when they do i'll jailbreak and download MyWi, then jump ship (with the other 9 iphones here) to the Verizon iphone who will probably offer tethering for free... f'king at&t..

I was doing Bluetooth tethering with my phone on Verizon - 8 YEARS AGO. Then they blocked it on that phone, and on my next phone, and then I switched to the iPhone ... well, maybe someday I'll get back to 8 years ago.

Just jailbreak and run MyWi, and you'll be even happier then you were 8 years ago. I had PDANet about 5 years ago on my Verizon Moto Q phone. Worked like a champ. Isn't it amazing how 5 years ago we thought the Q was "Revolutionary"... LOL
