the exact same things were said about the name "macbook" and "macbook pro" when it came out.

The name doesn't mean too much to me. As long the laptop is portable, functional, and a Mac, I will probably get one.

This thread is freaking hilarious. It was just two years ago so many people here were bitching and moaning on how "lame" the MacBook Pro name was. Now I read messages on how MacBook and MacBook Pro name are "timeless" and such, but MacBook Air name is lame. And the little sheep goes "baaaa, baaaa, baaa" all day long.

I'm betting IF there is a MacBook Air in two year everyone here will thing it's a "timeless" name. All I know is its a hella lot better than "TZ Series," "Inspiron," "Pavillion" and the other truly lame names PC makers give their notebooks.

Time Capsule Memory Jog: MacBook Pro is a Lame Name https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/172018/

I agree. People pretty much need to b*tch about everything. It's just a name for a laptop. Who cares? The specs and OS themselves are infinitively more important to whether one wil buy it or not.

I think people are reading too much into the air thing, but anyways, i thought id share my thoughts.

The product Air is already associated with wireless connectivity in apple products. AirPort (Extreme and Express, both wireless routers) and AirTunes. The Air brand already has a product line of its own (albeit quite small). The only way I can see the Air branding being used if Apple made some sort of home server like device. A glorified AirPort Extreme if you like. Built in storage, suitable for TM backups, an iTunes server for all your macs and apple-TVs.

Anything with Mac in its product name is a Personal Computer. (Macbook, iMac, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, Mac Mini)
Anything with X (as in EX, not roman numeral usage in OS 10) in its product name is Server based (XServe, XServeRAID, Xsan)
Anything with Air in its name is a wireless router of somekind.

Thats just my thoughts, and I have no evidence to back them up at all, so criticize away!

Hmmm "Apple Airport Home Server". Share your iTunes library and Time Machine Backup Drive with the Home Server. Got Gigabytes if music on your iPod and don't want the same stuff fill up your Mac's hard drive? Got a lot of photos you want to show everybody in the house? The Apple home server fits nicely under your Apple TV holding all your libraries and backups you don't need to take with you.

I'd like that. A Mac mini with external HD would do the same job but would be harder to set up.

Kid of odd that intel's WiMAX chipset is starting to pop up here and there and the rumor of Sprint re-launching XOHM on Tuesday.

Very interesting indeed.

forget the 'lameness' of the name for a second.

"This log entry was made on or before January 9th (based on the cache), well before the Moscone banners were posted."

That to me is very interesting and as good as confirms this WILL be the name of the new system what ever it will be!

Yes, but you make the case FOR a MacBook Air, and I'm not even sure you realize it. You've got a laptop i.e., MacBook and then IF the rumors are true, built-in wireless connectivity in the form of WiMax i.e., Air. Thus you get MacBook Air.

I'm just guessing and reading the rumor sites like everyone else. But remember a few months ago Apple included FREE WiFi with the iPhone in England. Imagine if Apple and Sprint got together for a similar deal here for a laptop and WiMax service...something like a MacBook Air.

how 'bout a CAES battery?

MacBook Air would indeed be a ridiculous name... forgivable only if this machine actually replaces the battery with a built-in compressed air energy storage tank (and microturbine generator). The question is whether the TSA would be more likely to freak out about a compressed air tank than they are with lithium batteries, ironically making the MacBook Air the first laptop banned from commercial airlines.

I wonder what kind of background have those who work in the counter-intelligence department at Apple. Because there has to be such a department! What a funny job... "Leak-busters"

do they fix leaks because ive got air bubbles in my boiller ...

air or no air this is most deffently related to iphone 3g no doubt

...and why did Apple shift from PowerBook to MacBook Pro? I doubt I'll ever fully understand all of their naming decisions. :)

because they will be using names that include the word 'book' for kindle ebook type devices in the future. iBook anyone? And calling it Macbook lets it be known that it is most definitely a mac, and not just a powerful book.

maybe

The name Macbookair seems odd at first but so did the name Wii, and we all know how that turned out. It'll take some getting used to, but pretty soon everyone will be taking about the macbook air and noone will ever look back :)

(on second thought maybe they will lol)...

PS: I just hope it doesnt cost over 1.5K

Rather than multi-touch gestures how about air based hand gestures to manipulate the UI...

Hello Minority Report, goodbye smudges.

hhhmmm

I still think the MacBook / MacBook Pro sounds a bit 'off'. Real men use PowerBooks.

MacBook Air? Certainly possible. I'm indifferent about what is released, I just want to know if I'd be able to buy it/them come Tuesday Evening in the UK :)

Well Macbook Water = Macbook 02

So Macbook Air = (whatever the forumla is?)

actually the formula for water is H20 not O2 which means 2 parts hydrogen one part oxygen. your formula would just mean 2 parts oxygen which is basically just oxygen. so you your second formula would be just O which not even george bush is stupid enough to call a product he made that (not that he could ever make something). just a little bit of a science lesson for ya :D

and actually i think macbook air is a really good name. to me it just seems cool. when i first heard that my thoughts went straight to wireless computer (and i mean including wireless charging, usb, etc.). and then i saw that on 9 to 5 mac. here is a mock-up picture that i saw in the article. i thought it was interesting.

people people...

I read all these ideas and theories on why the "air" moniker is bad or good... and so many think that is dumb.

If one said "macbook air" were to materialize, I would have to get adjusted to the name just like everyone seems to have done when they first changed from "power" to "mac". But I do not think it should bear the same suffixes as the ipods.. it needs something different.

the terms Nano, or mini make one think "small" just as the ipod nanos are relatively small compared to the rest. This laptop probably wouldnt be that small... Thin, yes, but small... not really.

If I walked up to you with a laptop the same dimensions as a current macbook , only it was .1inches thin... like...5 sheets of construction paper , thin.... would you say.. WOW look how tiny that laptop is!!! its soooo NANO like!!!
NO.. therefore, nano/mini just wouldn't fit. because those names infer more than just thinness. If I were on apples marketing team, this would be my argument to my fellow team members.

another reason to pick some unconventional name is so that it goes well with the unconventional computer to which its attached.

macbook air.... kind of like it. reminds me of nike air, though i think the marketing and name can only go so far, unlike, say, 'nano' or 'mini'. also, i keep on thinking of frisbees when i see 'macbook air'.

then again, i'm quite sick of 'nano' and 'mini'.

man... is this weekend lasting forever or what?! monday is going to feel 52 hours long...

haha tell me about it, i have to go to school on tuesday so i wont beable to watch the keynote till i get home, tuesday at school will be torture

Out of the bazillion different posts weighing in on the "Air" bit, your thoughts seem to be the most coherent, to me at least -- if only because of the point on branding you raised. Marketing would want the "Air" theme to be consistent.

But the larger point is this: I think any user in a multi-mac household, particularly ones with laptops, can relate to the need for such a product. Apple wants us to want more and more media, be it video or audio, and for it to be available for consumption through as many Apple products as possible -- iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, Apple TV, iMac, Macbook etc. All this content has to be stored somewhere, and for now, that has been on our computers as they hold, for consumers, the largest capacity. Video, particular of the HD variety, complicates that equation in that the file sizes are many times greater than say, your typical AAC song of iTunes. Combine that with the fact that an increasing proportion of Mac sales are MacBook/MacBook Pros where hard drive space is at a relative premium compared to a desktop and you can see where an "Air" server fits in. Perhaps this represents the pumped up Apple TV Businessweek pondered earlier this week. In any event, give it a much larger hard drive with its own master iTunes account and allow it to act as a hub to other computers on the network (probably finite just to please the content providers). Users will be able to navigate the iTunes Store on their television screen, with the ability to purchase movies and songs, or rent movies, HD ones, without having to get up from the couch. MacBook users will no longer have to be mindful of how much media they throw onto their hard drive. Instead of syncing to the Apple TV from the computer, the roles are reversed, and the user will designate only the songs, shows and movies they want on their computer from the Air Server. It allows the stagnant Apple TV to be reborn as a media server, ready to eat up tons of HD content, and allows happy owners to cast themselves into the role of programming director of their own mini-broadcast network. Perhaps something is in the air indeed..

This new mystery laptop will feature an OLED logo.. you will be able to change it in the system preferences... Mac Book Air, Mac Book Pro, Mac Book Slim, Mac Book Trim, Mac Book Ultra, Mac Book Mini, Mac Book Micro... the choice will be yours :D
