OHHHhhh...I wondered why the iPhone was so weak in this area.

It's because the one guy who knew how to fix it left in 2005! I'm glad they found him again!

This is the great news, as I thought Apple had buried it's head in the sand regarding it's terrible notification system.

Looking at the graphic in this article has me a bit surprised. I do not want thumbs up and thumbs down crap on my phone.

Please do not make my iPhone into a toy that blackberry owners will laugh at again.

The thumbs up and thumbs down is for Pandora. It's part of their song rating system for radio.

The way my Android phone handles notifications is one of the most impressive things about it.

Agreed! Android definitely wins here.

I used an Incredible for a few weeks and loved how notifies worked on it -- very clean and out of the way. Found myself wishing/hoping/praying that iOS would evolve to be just as clean and efficient with its notifications.

some of you have gripes about everything. I bet the current notification is bad for you folks that creep. You know what I mean.
"hey baby! Thanks for last night." LOL!

Pandora?

Think he has Pandora on while the screen shot was taken.

The way my Android phone handles notifications is one of the most impressive things about it. Every application can send notifications and they all appear in the same area.

iPhone OS has a long, long way to go.

Huh? Couldn't Apple fix this in a simple point update? Of course they could. Why they're dragging their feet in this particular area is anyone's guess, but they certainly don't need one specific guy (Dellinger) to come up with a solution.

"invented" is a very strong term for putting the notifications down at the bottom in a little box, you know?

this is great for apple, better interface, etc... and i haven't used webos too much...

but is putting the notification down at the bottom really that groundbreaking? i mean.... it's probably at the top or the bottom (unless it's goofy like apple's)... so i'm just not seeing the innovation.

eh, what do i know.

Use webOS and you'll see. Multitasking and notifications are above any other smartphone on the market currently. Shame it never took off.

There is no excuse for this taking 12 months to implement - this should have been a feature with v4. I would be disappointed to not see this before v5.

Ipaq

i think that the HP exec's quote about not buying Palm to get into the phone market is making a lot of the Palm people want to get out

Especially as they won't want to duicate their Ipaq division, Just make them a bit more user friendly. Wonder if this man can come up with an iPhone feature to stop my girlfriend snoring...

Reading the comments here, its quite clear no one here really does any development.

Everyone thinks its just a matter of Apple realizing, "Oh, we need better notifications", and its done...

Features like this take time. Its a matter of priority. Obviously Apple thought developers were the priority this round. The ridiculous amount of new API's added to iOS is testament to this.

iOS4 appears to be the Snow Leopard of the iOSs.

I am confident iOS5 will be more focused on user features.

+1

Hopefully we don't need to wait until iOS 5 to see the updated notification system. Maybe a 4.2 release?

Yes, please make it a 4.2 release! I can't stand those ten "lost network" pop-ups on my train ride home!

And an improved lock screen would be very much appreciated! :)

Good for us and Apple

Welcome back Rich. I think we as Apple consumer's got complacent with the products and the appearance that we get cool and functional addtions to the OS or device. Apple did to. As long as people buy, we're set. Now that everyone and SJ's grandma have complained about notifications, Apple has admit it is great at everything on the iOS. It was bound to happen at some point. Don't expect it to remain that way very long.

Great news. Now that iPhone has both local and push notification, we′ll have them more and more coming, so a new notification system would be a good solution.

I sure hope it will come soon (fall) as a small update so that we don′t have to wait for iOS5 in 2011.

I used LockInfo for some time on my 3G and it was very useful, but decided to get rid of it because it was slowing down everything. 3G is slow enough on its own. Hopefully, Apple will implement some new notification system soon, I don′t want to jailbreak anymore.

No we don't want a bigger screen or swappable battery, and widgets is pretty much useless anyway. And actually..we didn't really get iAds, the developers did.

Soooo....

What did he get right in that post? Would have been faster to respond to that? :D

While I appreciate the work and contributions that developers are bringing to the iPhone. I'd have to point out to you that this is more of a basic need than "being able to edit videos on my iPhone" or "5x digital zoom". So whilst I appreciate all the APIs they've packed in there to "do your magic", I still feel this should have taken priority over other nifty, cool features (that I still appreciate...).

This is great news. The notification system was the #1 reason I bought a Palm Pre instead of a new iPhone when I upgraded 6 months back.

Hopefully this means and end to the terrible in-your-face notifications that Apple has been using.

I think the biggest antennae since the 1980s nuclear powered Motorola phones should help with the lost network.
