Shouldn't be the least of their concerns... The front facing camera has become the "show me" technology.

"Honey I am working late..." "show me!"

"Sorry boss I am home sick and not at the opening day of hometown baseball..." "show me"
Agreed in the fullest! The only way around the *show me* is an excuse being the lack of an internet connection in certain situations. But def. agreed on this point . They can call your phone and choose to connect via *face* and not knowing you answer the phone unknowingly!

Excellent! This means Apple is aware that they have a bad notification system and are planning to fix it up real nice.

Now we just need a custom home screen (weather, calendar, etc.) and easier access to system settings (SB Settings).

Best Apple news I've heard in a while.

Please Apple, fix the d*mn notifications on the iPhone. I'm still annoyed that Apple thought that "Pop-ups" would be a brilliant idea for notifications.

w00master

Push notification is one of the weakest part of iOS. Here's hoping its replaced as soon as possible :)

One of my big hopes for iOS4 was a decent notification system, come on Rich, sort it out!

Welcome back :)

If he fixes the awful pop up notifications, he is my hero!

Ditto to you all! I am excited to see this. Hopefully we don't have to wait till 5.0. i won't get my hopes up to see it in a point release of iOS 4 but it would be very nice! :)

Totally welcome addition. I would love to see Pre like notifications in iOS. Palm did many things right in WebOS and notifications were dead on.

Yep, I was always very impressed with WebOS. I actually think they have a better UI implementation of multi-tasking too, but I will wait to play with iOS 4 before I pass final judgement.

I might not be able to not be called a fan boy... But I agree with Dusse for my own reasons, not just because it's how Apple is doing it.

A bigger screen? That means a bigger phone. I do not want to carry anything bigger than my current iPhone 3GS. In fact i find it too thick, I'm excited to see how the iPhone 4 feels in my pocket. It just might be the perfect size for me.

Swappable Battery? No, I do not want this. If only for the environmental reasons stated before, and the fact that I do not ever need to swap my battery. Sure, my phone has died before. Never in a place where I couldn't charge it.... and even if it wasn't, I'm not going to carry 2 batteries with my just in case. I like the fixed battery. They don't have to build the case to open up, the system to accept the battery, etc. etc.

Widgets? I have no need for this. Maybe you do. But I don't. Having my calendar, email etc available on my lock screen is not going to happen. I have alot of business information, that I do not want anyone to access. (hence my passcode).

iAds? Well I am developing an app for the app store, and this option provided me a different way to solve my pricing model. I know there will be more developers taking advantage of this, and if they can make money that way, there will be even more awesome apps in the store. So in the end, it adds to the end user.

Please formulate future replies with more of an argument than bringing the fanboi statement here. We are all members of a Mac Rumor forum, I think that kinda makes us more Fan Boi than the average person.

Thanks.

Push the home button down and move the speaker/camera/sensors up and you can elongate the screen a la Nexus One and you could get a 3.8" screen or so. The phone would be exactly the same size.

I don't really care per se about a removable battery but it would be nice and I doubt much would need to be done to make it removable based on the inside of the iPhone 4 pics from Gizmodo

Widgets would be great. Looking at the same rows of icons since 2007 sure has gotten boring. This is one feature I really enjoy on Android. There are some really nice and useful widgets which would be great to have on the home screen rather that the old rows of icons. Having your calendar, email, etc available on the lock screen is totally different than home screen widgets.

Elongating the screen without making the phone wider would change the aspect ratio, no? Keeping it as-is enabled Apple to go with true resolution doubling.

It would indeed change, however for Apps, if using the same ppi screen, current ones could run centered just fine on the display but modification to the new screen could be done.

You'd still like to carry around extra batteries rather then have 40% more battery life inside the phone? Thank god you aren't working for Apple with that ancient paradygm stuck in your head.

The problem with that is that Apple's batteries inside their phones aren't actually more powerful than the replaceable batteries other manufacturers use in their phones. Apple sacrifices long battery life for making their phones a few mm thinner than other phones. I suspect most people would rather see the iPhone 4 a couple of mm thicker and 100% more battery life so that you could run it a couple of days without recharging.

I don't know what the iPhone 4 has but the 3GS had a 1200Mah battery whereas most Nokia smartphones have the 1500Mah BP-4L battery and less power hungry hardware. I go 2-3 days on my E71 usually.

40% more battery life in the iPhone 4 implies a 1680Mah battery OR more efficient hardware than the 3GS.

The Gizmodo prototype had a 1420Mah battery so I'd guess the improved battery life comes from more efficient hardware as well as the slightly bigger battery. The battery is still smaller than phones with removable batteries.

Incidentally, the first iPhone had a 1400Mah battery. The 3G had 1150Mah.

Isn't the real front page news story is that Apple might be introducing a revamped notification system in place, rather than the re-hiring of a former employee? I mean, the latter isn't exactly riveting news.

Not sure the real story is a better notification system.

From the Article.
Co-developed the Application Framework used by webOS. Created the CSS structure and defined HTML layout and structure conventions in Mojo Application Framework, and for core Palm applications.

What if he was working on a more general HTML5 webapp framework.
There so many areas in Apples existing product list that could be improved by this. Plus if they build a compelling development environment (or improve Dashcode) that you have to buy a mac to get but will let you run in many environments including all the mobile web kit ones. Then that helps cement the viablity of the Mac going in to the Post-PC era.

But I'm sure he could knock out an improved notification system UI in the first month or so just to get back in the swing of things.

If this gets integrated in some form this would be sweet. Like maybe on the lock screen.

Wow, that's a pretty big promotion.

Especially considering the guy doesn't even have an advanced degree. Other than some studio classes, the highest level of education he has is an associates degree. I guess this is a good example of when your portfolio and experience speaks more than your degree.

HP is currently leading the industry in laying off thousands and thousands of employees.

Perhaps you didn't understand my post but when I was 'bragging' about the wondrous technologies such as, throw-away inkjet printers and DMCA protected ink cartridges. I was in fact mocking HP! Anyone who has to run to the government to bully competing ink sellers (with really lame DMCA accusations) and then spends much of their day dreaming up new ways to make printers that are worth LESS than the ink that comes with them isn't what I'd call the next 'Willy Wonka' of the tech world.

Which is how people should always be hired except for those with no experience.

i think that the HP exec's quote about not buying Palm to get into the phone market is making a lot of the Palm people want to get out

HP put out a clarification the next day:

HP said the exec didn't mean they wouldn't make WebOS phones. They will.

What the exec meant was that they didn't buy Palm _just_ for phones, but for their patents and for putting WebOS on items like their web-enabled printers.

RIGHT and WRONG!

Right... there ARE more powerful replaceable batteries that are thicker and YES many/most/all of the OTHER phone makers wouldn't think twice about adding a few extra mm to the phones thickness to go with the same battery everyone else is using.

Wrong... Apple SHOULD NOT use them and most of their customers would agree. Why you ask?

Apple wants to have the thinest, fastest, clearest and most elegant device it can make - it PUSHES its parts suppliers for 'ONE BETTER' whenever they possible can (within financial reason). It embraces more robust AND thinner batteries whenever possible since in todays world that one item takes by far the most space and while it might cost a little bit more it is certainly worth it if it gives them bragging rights for being the thinest.

- Now ... who do you have to thank for that battery being utilized in such enormous quantities? Apple.

- What happens when something is made in such high volumes? The price drops... thanks to? Apple!

- Who will be using THOSE batteries (you're mocking today) in tomorrows cell phones... The copycats.

This is nothing new for Apple... The laser jet engine, The mouse, WIFI, LCD Displays, USB, 1.8" HDs, FLASH memory, capacitive touchscreen displays (phone sized), touchscreen displays tablet sized. I might have missed some but Apple was responsible for each and every one of those technologies to be manufactured in SUCH high volume that the prices all dropped (substantially) from where they started.

Lets be serious here for one second.. Would capacitive touchscreen displays be anywhere near as cheap as they are now had it not been for Apple entering the cell phone industry? Without Apples iPhone, the Google Android would have never been developed, and the 'smart phone' leaders would still be... RIM? Palm? Microsoft? Nokia?

So, you should applaud Apple for the 'crazy' battery choices (or whatever) they make... because chances are you'll be using them in the cellphones everyone else will be making _NEXT_ year. While Apple happily trots on to find the next 'crazy' part to utilize.

Apple can't loose until they are faced with another INNOVATOR.

A company that downloads a FREEWARE CELL PHONE OS and then proceeds to install it on a random collection of parts that are 'one better' than the current iPhone does not scream innovation. Sure put in an 8MP camera, sure slap on desktop flash for the crybabies, front facing camera with ZERO software to use it? Yea sure why not!! Hey guys?!? Anyone care to explain why our phone can't even last 1/2 the time the iPhone does? Ummm well if we use this chunky battery it'll help...

OKAY SWEET! Lets just fatten this bad boy up with the chubby-batt and crank up the assembly line. We are SO gonna WIN now.

And widgets, and a free turn by turn option, a bigger screen, and a swappable battery. Instead we got iAds.....yay!

This hopefully means Apple realizes their notification system is idiotic.

Just like your "brilliant" posts on this forum ?

If you want that kind of customization, you got the wrong company. Android is where you go if you're someone that likes to configure, tinker, or think for yourself.

Just like you got the wrong forum to keep speaking about your beloved Android

I found this ridiculous that Apple must have a UI executive back from Palm to have decent notification system.

Plus Palm Pre is the Dreamcast of the smartphones: the best yet the most underated device of its generation.

Umm, I find it more ridiculous that you believe this hiring is what you think it is. It is more likely the UI designer chose to leave Palm and went back to Apple. He isn't the only one who left Palm, dozens of people have left Palm after HP bought them out. It is also highly likely that he may not be related to the PNS project at all at Apple. He has done other UI work unrelated to notification system.

What would be fantastic is a Growl style notification that would pop up in the corner of the window for like 2 or 3 seconds, opaque and allow functions to be made THROUGH it, except for perhaps a in the upper right side corner which would effectively take you out of a app or game if you pleased. It would simply flash New Text from "So and So" or whatnot. Simple.

Ah, the RDF is strong in this one.

Nokia stick 1500Mah replaceable batteries in their E series phones. The E-Series E71/72 is thinner than the iPhone 3G.

I can go 2-3 days on one charge whilst iPhone users are reaching for their chargers or hunting around for a USB port. Ask them which they prefer.

Apple's batteries are exactly the same Li-Ion batteries everybody else uses. There's nothing special about them at all.

Bragging rights over being the thinnest is silly. They could have for example kept the iPhone 4 the same thickness as the 3GS and nobody would have complained. The extra space could have been used for a longer camera lens, bigger battery and better aerials (eg a 5Ghz 802.11n aerial).

LOL! Apple have sold about 20m iPhones in TOTAL. Nokia sold about 130 million last quarter.

Android was developed BEFORE the iPhone and Nokia still are the largest smart phone manufacturer by far with roughly market share equivalent to the next three competitors combined.

Uh-huh, isn't the US cellphone market great. Android isn't the only competition - far from it.

EXACTLY the notification system I was thinking about.

What about the ****ing integrated Facebook that was rumored? Nothing, Pre and Android are still better for this.

Jailbreak? I think there's this thing called Prowl, I don't know if its efficient, but it can't be as efficient and battery saving as a native notification system.

You made a mistake by taking a rumor quite literally. They're rumors for a reason. Don't ever believe anything until it is officially confirmed by an official source.

Needless to say, we can see some added features in say, 4.1 firmware update? You never know if/when rumors ever come true. Just please try not to rant over something that was never confirmed.

Something to rant about, for example, was when they announced and added the MMS feature in iPhone OS 3.0, yet AT&T subscribers were left out until 3.1 FW update. That's real reason to rant on something. Not an unconfirmed rumor from a rumor blog site. SMH

As both a user of a Palm Pre and an iPhone, I praise the webOS notification daily and curse the iPhone notification almost daily (my iPhone is a secondary phone).

Guess we'll see what iOS5 will bring, or else as others have said, an update to the iOS4 system.
