This is terrific.

I think notifications is like copy and paste. Apple knows it's missing, but is struggling to find an implementation that just works. Hopefully this guy can figure it out.

There is no excuse for this taking 12 months to implement - this should have been a feature with v4. I would be disappointed to not see this before v5.

yeah i'd be a little annoyed if it took that long, it really should have been iOS4,.. but i'm also trying to think when we got a new feature like this that wasn't in a major os increment ? anyone ?

Steve: You'll be back! They all come crawling back.

Rich: Doubt it!

*A few years later*

Steve: Back already?

Rich: Shut up and pay me.

Steve: Ok, but you're starting at half your old salary. Moron.

you don't think we got a bigger screen? 4X the rez, and you don't think that's bigger? you are a nut.

Obviously resolution and size are not the same thing. How would you like, say, 2000x1000 resolution on a 0.5" screen?

Replaceable batteries == cheap batteries that either have a short battery life requiring you to carry a spare or batteries that have a short life span requiring you to buy a replacement often.

Companies will cheap out whenever they can if they have something that is replaceable. It's like the razor/blade model or the printer/ink cartridge model.

If you care about the environment, you should not be hoping for more devices with replaceable batteries. I hate devices that use AA batteries with a passion.

some of you have gripes about everything. I bet the current notification is bad for you folks that creep. You know what I mean.
"hey baby! Thanks for last night." LOL!

Shouldn't be the least of their concerns... The front facing camera has become the "show me" technology.

"Honey I am working late..." "show me!"

"Sorry boss I am home sick and not at the opening day of hometown baseball..." "show me"

and the always popular turn by turn... do that many people really have no idea where they are going? there is that much driving in strange cities going on? i gotta get out more.

Um yes, people still drive around. Many states now can issue you a ticket if they see a device in your hand, thanks to all the new texting while driving laws.

The Google Maps with GPS is ok if you do not miss a turn or they have the road blocked. With a turn by turn system, it will recalculate and tell you where to turn next. Never mind looking down at your iphone trying to figure out how to get back on route.

Also, my wife has a genetic disease that effects 1 in 1500 girls. Part of that disease messes with your sense of direction. She can tell you what turn to take in a city we only visit once a year, but have her take a detour on her normal driving route and she gets all messed up. Reading maps is hard, plus trying to google maps is tough for her. She needs a system that says "turn right at next exit"

Problem for us: Garmin and TomTom are expensive and you have to keep manually updating the maps. Plus try to justify the cost when you got google maps built in to a $300 iphone that is costing over $100 / month.

Isn't the real front page news story is that Apple might be introducing a revamped notification system in place, rather than the re-hiring of a former employee? I mean, the latter isn't exactly riveting news.

While I appreciate the work and contributions that developers are bringing to the iPhone. I'd have to point out to you that this is more of a basic need than "being able to edit videos on my iPhone" or "5x digital zoom". So whilst I appreciate all the APIs they've packed in there to "do your magic", I still feel this should have taken priority over other nifty, cool features (that I still appreciate...).

While I appreciate your viewpoint, I think apple can sell way more iPhone 4's by adding features like being able to edit videos on the phone, 5x digital zoom and the new apps that will appear thanks to all those new API's. I honestly have never really had too much of a problem with the notifications. Even if it was as big as deal as it sounds in this thread, I doubt the # of people holding off from getting an iPhone because of the notification system is larger than the amount of people waiting for new features. I know there are people out there that would compare phones solely on the megapixel count of the phone camera.

Some of us here forget that of the millions of iPhones out there, the average user is uninformed and easily impressed.

So ... after thinking about it in this thread... sure iPhone could use some notification improvements and I wouldn't be opposed to see it happen, I just don't think it should be the #1 priority.

Also, come to think of it, I think they are afraid to change how the OS works, because users have been using it a certain way for years... change can alienate them.

Just my 2 cents.

And you are right. But the fact that it is a more basic need, also means that it involves a LOT more work.

It has to integrate well into everything that Apple does with the iPhone, including, critically, 3rd party development. Which means it needs to be a robust API right from the beginning.

This is very similar to copy/paste. Copy/Paste was very basic, but not easy to implement.

The people developing Apple's application features (like video zoom, etc.) are very different from those implementing underlying API's. And its quite probable that a new notification system would fall in the latter camp.

Shocking!

For the life of me I can't imagine WHY someone would leave such a wonderful, technologically innovative institution responsible for such 21st century wonders as disposable inkjet printers & DMCA protected ink cartridges?

It truly boggles the brain.

iOS4 can slide whole apps around the screen (they slide up for the app switcher) so that opens up new ways to show notification details. Maybe a mini-notification in the corner (title bar), which when tapped makes the app slide down to show a fully-detailed notification history.

Games will always need to pause before anything intrudes on the screen of course—that probably won’t change. But now there can be a new 4th kind of notification—the default kind, hopefully—with the old popups being something you’d enable only for certain important kinds of things.

so a new improved notification system will come next year with iOS5 but apple will act like they were the first to come up with a useful way to handle notifications... kinda like how they think their multitasking is better than webOS... I just hope they have enough patents to pretty much steal the banner notifications from palm... Id hate to see it happen to palm but they are the best notification system ive used in any smartphone so why not just copy them...

If you want that kind of customization, you got the wrong company. Android is where you go if you're someone that likes to configure, tinker, or think for yourself.

This is fantastic. I hope this guy leads to appealing changes in iOS' notification system.

Pushing notifications is not a bad method; how they are displayed in iOS is what's horrific. The blue popups are invasive at best and there's no way for them to be queued for review later. It's just sloppy.

Looking forward to seeing what Rich brings to the iOS table!

it totally annoys me when I'm using googla maps with the gps locator beacon and drive through acity that every minute a huge popup blocks the screen offering 10 wifi networks in range. then it takes 10 clicks to switch wifi of while I'm driving. then it takes 10 freaking clicks to activate wifi again.

whoever designed these blue popups should be fired and replaced by this guy.

the only thing that amazes me is how this guy can work for a direct competitor to palm/hp? don't they have non competition clauses in their contracts?

Pssst, some of us have left our parents' basement and are out in the real world like big boys and girls now. And sometimes we visit places we've never been! It's truly exciting!

It's funny, things the iPhone can't do that other phones do are deemed "unimportant" or frivolous, while other things it can do are deemed MAGICAL AND REVOLUTIONARY. Until Apple told me I needed excessive resolution on a tiny screen, I didn't know it. But hey, now when I blow up an icon 200 times its intended use, I'll barely see any pixels! That truly is useful and mind-blowing.

And widgets, and a free turn by turn option, a bigger screen, and a swappable battery. Instead we got iAds.....yay!

No we don't want a bigger screen or swappable battery, and widgets is pretty much useless anyway. And actually..we didn't really get iAds, the developers did.

fanboysayswhat??
I might not be able to not be called a fan boy... But I agree with Dusse for my own reasons, not just because it's how Apple is doing it.

A bigger screen? That means a bigger phone. I do not want to carry anything bigger than my current iPhone 3GS. In fact i find it too thick, I'm excited to see how the iPhone 4 feels in my pocket. It just might be the perfect size for me.

Swappable Battery? No, I do not want this. If only for the environmental reasons stated before, and the fact that I do not ever need to swap my battery. Sure, my phone has died before. Never in a place where I couldn't charge it.... and even if it wasn't, I'm not going to carry 2 batteries with my just in case. I like the fixed battery. They don't have to build the case to open up, the system to accept the battery, etc. etc.

Widgets? I have no need for this. Maybe you do. But I don't. Having my calendar, email etc available on my lock screen is not going to happen. I have alot of business information, that I do not want anyone to access. (hence my passcode).

iAds? Well I am developing an app for the app store, and this option provided me a different way to solve my pricing model. I know there will be more developers taking advantage of this, and if they can make money that way, there will be even more awesome apps in the store. So in the end, it adds to the end user.

Please formulate future replies with more of an argument than bringing the fanboi statement here. We are all members of a Mac Rumor forum, I think that kinda makes us more Fan Boi than the average person.

Thanks.

kind of interesting how this shuffle of talent works amongst the major tech companies. what about he rest of the apple engineers that left for palm? i never actually saw the palm os, but as a whole, how did the user interface compare with the iphone's?

True, iPhone should have turn by turn as a default and free app. I use google maps all the time and am frustrated that it can't keep up with a current route. If you go back to the first iPhone though, having google maps on the phone was VERY revolutionary.

I think one of the hindrances to Apple bringing turn -by -turn navigation to a native iPhone app, is the fact they do not want to step on the toes of some fairly big developers that have apps in this market already. I guess you can argue that the phone isn't missing that feature, you just have to buy it separate.

That being said, if the competitors offer it included, Apple should build a killer navigation app and include it with all iPhones.

As for the high res screen? Sure you can blow up an icon larger than intended and see the difference... But I think if your going to shoot video in HD, have a 5MP camera, you might as well be able to have a higher res screen in the device. In a year or two, this will be a requirement. If the iPhone 6 doesn't meet the same res as one of it's competitors there will be people on this board screaming about that.

Now we just have to wait a year until iOS 5. Was really hoping for new notifications on 4, but atleast they are most likely coming sooner than later.

Reading the comments here, its quite clear no one here really does any development.

Everyone thinks its just a matter of Apple realizing, "Oh, we need better notifications", and its done...

Features like this take time. Its a matter of priority. Obviously Apple thought developers were the priority this round. The ridiculous amount of new API's added to iOS is testament to this.

iOS4 appears to be the Snow Leopard of the iOSs.

I am confident iOS5 will be more focused on user features.

Huh? It's not a complicated feature. Other people manage to add features like this all the time. For example...

https://betalabs.nokia.com/blog/201...call-message-and-calendar-notifications-at-yo

Admittedly what Nokia are doing there is just re-introducing a feature they had in S60 3rd edition E-Series homescreen from 2004 but this time as a web based widget for their existing web based homescreen.

Perhaps Apple needs a web based front end too?
