iOS 9+ is supposed to handle this automatically by dropping off bad wifi more aggressively. They call the feature "LTE assist" or something, and if you've turned it off, that might be the reason.

Wifi-assist. Doesn’t really work. My iPhone sticks to my home wifi network till I’m at the end of my block. It’s crazy.

When I got home last night, 4 hours after I arrived, I noticed I was still not connected to a wifi network.

Really annoying.

Thanks, "wifi assist" was what I meant. Yeah, could be that they have a hard time determining how (subjectively) strong the wifi signal is. It almost always works well enough for me that I don't resort to manual toggles, but ymmv.

I personally think that wifi should be or could be geo based. I don't want my phone checking for wifi at every stop light. How about it only checks when I get to specific locations...like home or office..OR IF I ASK IT TO

this would save tons of battery or at least free up the processor....

Or only connect to <MyHomeWiFiSID> when I'm at home... or only connect to <hotelChainSID> what I'm physically at one of their hotels... or only connect to <StarBucksSID> when I'm at a StarBucks... or....

It's an amazing idea, and one that could add another layer of actually useful security. :)

And guess what the very lowest-power way to figure out your geolocation is?

That’s right. Wi-Fi.

It would not.

I understand what they’re trying to do, but I believe it’s unnecessary.

Off should be off, on should be on.

Keep it simple stupid.

What Apple is doing now will save me money almost every month.

Everyone has been so hung up on the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth indicators and maybe I missed it, but is NO ONE bothered by the proposed line under the right hand status indicators??!

I mean, speaking of dumbing things down; not to mention that tiny area is cluttered enough without adding an EXTRA indicator - even "just" a line.

What happened to the simple concept of symmetry? By Apple's proposed logic to have that extra line, why is there no line under the clock to show where the notifications pull down is?

Who's signing off on these UI design decisions?! Seriously.

Discussed in various 11.2 beta threads (that aren't specifically about the WiFi and Bluetooth Control Center controls, like this thread is).

And you can still do that with the iPhone.
Only til the next day, when your phone turns them back on automatically. Your phone does this.

Is it really yours at this point?

The News app full of adverts, the Podcast app sends my listening habits back to Apple without my ability to switch off , the iPod app/Music - the thing which made apple the success it is today - advertises to me daily to buy a subscription to their music service....

Is my phone really mine anymore. My iPhone 3g felt more my own possession. My current iPhone feels like a personal billboard. That I paid for.

I never get an answer in these threads. What problem are you trying to solve by turning off Wi-Fi?

Being tracked? Apple already anonymizes your MAC address.

Battery life? It has no noticeable effect. If anything, lack of Wi-Fi means the far battery-hungrier GPS will kick in more often.

Radiation? No scientific basis.
Simple: CRAPPY WiFi connections

It’s back on that and my 7, not on the IPhone X
Is that why the damn thing not working on my X?
Was about to ask the geniuses at the local apple store...

Maddeningly annoying "feature" - off button that don't actually turn anything off, and that keep turning on again under various random conditions. WTF Apple. Steve Jobs would never have... well who knows.

This pisses me off, it's not what I want, and it's also not in Apple's design playbook - off means off.

I'll make an app to actually turn them on / off and charge 1$ for it...
Waving my "Hamilton" here waiting for you to make the app!

You can disable WiFi and/or Bluetooth from settings for as long as you want, just like you always could (even before Control Center ever existed).

Do you work for Apple in any fashion? Or is it a coincidence that every single one of your responses has a shill undertone?
There’s a reason why even in cellphone user manuals they say to use Bluetooth devices to keep radiation to a minimum. If you want to talk “scientific basis” we can do that.

Maybe I want to turn off WiFi for the simple reason that I don’t like the pop-up in my face asking me which networks I want to connect to as I’m working on something?
Not everyone WANTS to be a participant in connecting to the “internet of things” everywhere, all the time.
There are countless reasons why someone would want to turn off Bluetooth and/or WiFi indefinitely.
Who are you to question someone’s personal preference on their own device?

WiFi assist?

WiFi assist is ok if the connection is really bad, but it doesn't work when you have a slow connection.
At home I have 20Mbps downlink and a measly 1Mbps uplink. It works, but it is slow. On my iPhone I have 30GB per month, so plenty of data to use. Sometimes my wife is watching a video and I prefer switching to LTE on my iPhone so I'm sure I'm not disturbing her, so I swipe up to control center and disable wi-fi. That's something I do almost every day, and even at work sometimes I switch off wi-fi if I'm reading an online newspaper or buying stuff on amazon, I don't want them to know I'm doing personal stuff even if it is allowed to use the web for personal reasons.

I'm fine with the way iOS 11 handles the switch, since I use airdrop quite often. I simply want to disconnect form wi-fi, and that's what the toggle in control center is for.
I'd rather not being annoyed every time with a popup when I use it, so I hope it will be something I can disable or that shows up only the first time I perform the action

You can turn that off.

I'm not doing that. Apple is. They always have. iOS is never going to be the most customizable operating system, just like macOS never was.

This level of complicated is totally asinine. Why not make use of 3D touch? One tap disconnects it temporarily, long press gives option to turn off and perhaps other menu options like connect to another device. They did move auto brightness to accessibility. Guess they really are not going for simple.

So you just like to push your viewpoint onto others for the fun of it? I’m sure people love you.

Why do you feel the need to explain functionality of Apple products I’ve already mentioned? It’s not rocket science, and causes you to speak in redundancies.
And I recant my previous question about you shilling for Apple. If you did you’d know that having WiFi/Bluetooth on while not connected to anything as you’re driving/walking causes your phone to constantly ping, looking for connections which is proven to drain battery. Which is the same mode of action when you don’t have a cell signal.
You don’t know as much as you think you do.

Not sure what bone you have to pick with me, but hope it's worth it?

I'm not pushing a viewpoint. I'm not shilling. I'm not claiming to be the end-all-be-all of knowledge on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

If you want to believe that Wi-Fi network scan is a significant battery drain on a 2017 iPhone, believe that.

The way I see it, turning Bluetooth off or on has its pros and cons. You get the benefits of turning Bluetooth off, you also get the drawbacks of turning Bluetooth off (disabling airdrop, for instance).

I guess the intent is precisely to second guess the reasons why people want to turn off Bluetooth and WiFi and give users that, while retaining the benefits. Sorta like a “best of both worlds” scenario.
