If iMessages sync gets released today their servers are going to be overwhelmed

I saved an archive of my message history (on my Mac) and wiped clean all conversations in Messages in preparation for this; I figure it's best to not have my devices trying to sync years and years worth of messages, that tends to bring out the bugs.

Yep, I bet it is full of bugs, but Cook did not want to have the address this ugly elephant at WWDC.

If you ask me, 6 days to go doesn't mean squat. If they bring it up that they did release it, that's pretty disingenuous. On a time scale of a year, 6 days apart is practically the same. The ugly elephant is that it took them a year to release it, not that it wouldn't have been released since the previous years WWDC announcement of the service.

I'm wondering if they are choosing not to mention it at release because of this. They could quietly include it in the update, and have Messages begin backing up slowly, say over a week or 2, so that it's more spread out across the millions and millions of devices. Then in a week or 2, they can say "iMessage in the cloud is now available via a server-side update" and viola, all your messages are already in the cloud and it works right away.

If they announced it being available immediately at 11.4's release, it could be pandemonium because everyone would be expecting it to work right away. Of course I'm just completely guessing over here.

I have questions about Messages in the cloud.

I keep all of my conversations on my iMac and delete them from my iPhone.

If I turn on Messages in the Cloud, is that going to bring back the Messages I deleted from my iPhone? Or will it just start syncing from now forward?

And if I delete a thread on my iPhone is it going to delete permanently from my iMac or just be “closed”?

Apple has announced that iOS 11.4 will be publicly released today with long-awaited support for AirPlay 2 and Messages in iCloud.

iOS 11.4 should be available over-the-air and through iTunes shortly after 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, likely alongside tvOS 11.4, macOS 10.13.5, and watchOS 4.3.1. HomePod is also getting a software update through the Home app today.

AirPlay 2 support will finally enable multi-room audio and stereo pairing on HomePods. When you add a HomePod to more than one room, the speakers will instantly communicate with each other, allowing the same music to be played everywhere or for different songs to be played in different rooms at once.

Messages in iCloud support in iOS 11.4 was specifically mentioned by The Verge.

More details to follow...

We’ll see. I do remember when photos in the cloud was released, iCloud sync in general was lagged. Change a contact and it would only reflect a couple of hours later on my other devices

IMO it should really only upload the most recent of messages and then from
Here on start sycing accordingly. I’ve gone through my messages and deleted most unwanted things. My sync would be over in 5
Minutes lol. Cant believe some friends of mine have messages from their iPhone 6 days that have just transferred over from
Backups

Let's hope that's the ugly elephant. A buggy release would be worse, and the timing does give one pause in that regard. But hopefully, Apple just needed nearly-but-not-quite-a-year to make this thing perfect.

The link provided mentions nothing about 11.4 dropping today. The only date mentioned in that article is June 18.

So where has Apple confirmed?
