I recommend this to anyone owning an iOS device: do *not* update past the major version your device came with.

My iPad 2 - great tablet when I bought it! - is now laying useless, and not because it broke physically.
i think one major update is fine, but the second is a bad idea.

That's not "perfectly serviceable". Are you kidding me? Your iPhone is 5 years old, the processor is slow as balls. iOS 11 lags on the iPhone 6, it wouldn't be usable on the iPhone 5. And don't even think about blaming Apple or claiming "planned obsolesce", I challenge you to find a phone that will receive updates for as many years as your iPhone 5 did.

My iPhone 5 is fine. I did turn off all Spotlight Search functionality when a previous update slowed down the device, but that was fixed quickly. Turning off Spotlight Search makes a big difference. All the iOS games I have developed still work at 60FPS on it, so I have no worries with using it.

And I'm not claiming "planned obsolesce", quite the opposite. My devices are well made and continue to function even if they cannot run the latest OS.

I'm still on iOS 10.

No need to speculate, I'll tell you why...

  1. I'm nervous that iOS 11 will degrade the performance of my phone.
  2. It is known to have shipped with QA flaws, issues and oversights.
  3. Apple killed the magic, they're just another CE maker now. I'm not as loyal of a follower/user as I used to be because of the price gouging and compromised hardware they keep putting out. They've lost a lot of goodwill on my end. And yeah, I may be just one person that won't affect the scales or volumes of their entire market, but you still can't erase a person out og existence so here I am, still on iOS 10.
tl;dr; - major trust issues

I figure I'll reconsider upgrading my 6S once 11.1 comes out.

I would add that people have recognized that Apple pushes out updates ready or not, in the best interest of users or not, with limited testing, and bugs. Come on, two updates in two weeks. Seriously, with the new Apple installing a new version is really, really risky, regardless of the many, many betas. I guess that is really your #2, but I believe it needs more emphasis because the Apple brand is being damaged in the name of Cook and his lack of understanding of technology.

Two weeks after being released to the public, iOS 11 is installed on 38.5 percent of iOS devices, according to data collected by analytics company Mixpanel.

Since last week, iOS 11 adoption has grown by just over 10 percentage points. At the 24 hour mark, iOS 11 was installed on 10 percent of devices, and at the one week mark, iOS 11 was installed on 25.28 percent of devices.

iOS 11 adoption rates have been slower than iOS 10 adoption rates during the same time period last year. Two weeks following the release of iOS 10 in September of 2016, the update installed on 48.16 percent of devices, putting iOS 11 about 10 percent behind.

It's not clear why iOS 11 adoption is lagging so far behind iOS 10 adoption, but it could be due to the fact that key features like peer-to-peer Apple Pay and iCloud storage for iMessages have been delayed until a later update.

Apple has already released two minor updates to iOS 11, iOS 11.0.1 and iOS 11.0.2, both addressing bugs in the operating system. The most recent iOS 11.0.2 update, for example, fixes an issue that caused some iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models to emit a crackling sound from the earpiece during phone calls.

As iOS 11 adoption grows, the number of users on iOS 10 has been decreasing. 54.82 percent of iOS users continue to run iOS 10, while 6.69 percent run an older version of iOS.

Lets not forget Androids latest version witch launched in march 2016 is still at 17%, And the new Oreo is at less than 0.5%.

I see comments from people who don't want to jump into ios11? Does that mean they won't get iphone 8 or x?

Ahh the old “this has been my experience on my one device out of several million therefore everyone else must have the same experience” thinking.
When users are using a iPhone 6 and wondering why their phones are slow and then they blame iOS when in reality their phone is outdated and should upgrade.

I've had a perplexing experience with iOS 11 so far. The public betas ran great on my 7+. Traded that in for an 8+ and it acts kind of jerky/sketchy from time to time. And the GPS seems to be wonky, especially with Pokemon Go, where my location doesn't get updated so I have to kill & relaunch the app. My wife updated her 7 from 10 to 11 and has suffered from extreme slowness and battery drain.

This is not stellar.
Exactly as expected. No idea why people always rush into a "beta testing" and then are surprised with such consequences.. So enjoy your early adoption.

Have been pretty unhappy with the performance of iOS 11 on my iPhone 8.

I would have downgraded to 10.3.3 if able, and then upgrade again when jailbreak releases months down the line.

Ehh, have to disagree with you there. Apple is starting to price these phones almost as high as a computer, in some cases higher. If their expectation is that everyone is on an annual upgrade cycle then they are miscalculating. Yes, an iPhone 6 is getting a little long in the tooth. But is it so old that it shouldn't work properly anymore? I say no.

Oh wow, an OS is installed on many devices after Apple spams the hell out of their users to install it. I wonder why that happens..

Especially when you generally can't go back.

Apple's disregard to the speed and responsiveness of their operating systems, as well as some of their nonsense design choices, has really made me step back from Apple.

I've updated an iPhone SE and an iPad Mini 4 and they're both working fine, no slower than before.

I must've done something wrong.:(

Maybe my screens are not big enough.

Well I've got 11.0.2 installed on my 5S tonight and its just as smooth and useable as it was on 11.0.0 public beta, so I've no idea why newer devices are having issues. My iPad Mini 4 is also running pretty slick.

The 1 gb of ram was too low from the start

People don't even bother installing an update that slows down their device without adding any new feature or functionality. Possibly the worst iOS release to date.

Really. Nothing new for iPad on iOS 11, eh?

And how are the numbers and updates for Android devices?

No one is holding off upgrading to ios 11 because of "peer-to-peer Apple Pay and iCloud storage for iMessages".

I realize the authors here are extremely pro-Apple, but that's just absurd. The average person doesn't even know what either of those features mean let alone that they are missing.

At least come up with something plausible - like the fact that the iPhone X is delaying the hardware updates that automatically come with a software update. THAT makes sense and is still pro-apple. :D And honestly until the X ships, one can't definitively say how much of the difference is the delayed launch or the -uh- 'courageous' software. ;)

The 1 gb of ram was too low from the start

Of course it was, but at the time everyone went on about how "why would you ever need more RAM than that?", and "Apple's memory management doesn't need any more RAM".

They still do it today about the current lineups, which will be RAM starved in no time, if they aren't already.

Doubt I'll ever update my iPad Air 2, sadly... the features look great, but I have about 40 32-bit and iCade games that I've paid for that will never work again, and I'm not having that.
I updated mine and so far I’m really regretting it.

I am having lag and battery issues. I wish I could go back to 10 but the last backup I have is like 4 months ago so I think I’ll loose a bunch of stuff if I do it. Isn’t that correct?

Been loving it on all of my devices. No slow downs, no issues and great battery. No sure what all the fuss is about

Who knows. Some people are good with it...

Depends on what you mean by stuff -- emails will restore from the server, photo library probably restore from apple servers, messages will be lost.

Battery drains 50% faster since iOS 11 is installed on my 6s. Super annoying of course. I'm starting to think updating in general is not such a great idea, it's not the first time an update totally messes up an iphone, the same happened on my 4s years ago.
Then they wonder why adoption rates are not that great...

I'd be more inclined to update if it wasn't planned obsolescence; I suspect other consumers have grown wise to Apple's ways as well.

You have got to be kidding me. You do realize progress means leaving the old behind right ? And how come nobody accuses Google of doing this when they support their devices even less time than Apple ? Go away already.
