The slower adoption (compared to 10) could be due to the fact that 32 bit apps won't work with iOS 11.

Good point. That and slower iPhone 8 sales (because people are waiting for the X).

When users are using a iPhone 6 and wondering why their phones are slow and then they blame iOS when in reality their phone is outdated and should upgrade.
Or Apple could be honest and tell people how the latest OS updates will perform.
A phone doesn't get slower as time goes by unless the software updates affect performance.

It seems that more than likely the difference is due there being more devices out there that are still in use that don't support iOS 11.

I don't think so. I would have bought that with iOS 10 where they dropped the iPad 2,3, Mini 1, iPhone 4S and Touch 5, where the iPad 2 and Mini 1 had a very large installed base, but iOS 11 only drops the iPhone 5 and 5C (The iPhone 5 has always had a low installed base as it was only for sale for a year and the 5C was never a flagship) and the iPad 4.

I didn't update. iPhone 6, and iPad 2017, A8 and A9 processors. From what I read, A10 and A11 are what runs this well

None of the features intrigued me to risk it

Is there a way I can prevent the download? I know I can delete it after it's diwnloaded, but I want to prevent the download

Install tvOS beta on your devices and you'll forget what an update it

I wish I would have not updated, but had to as a company phone. But clearly iPhone 6 are suffering a lot in terms of performance.

Why would I knowingly install something tha slows down my phone and breaks the apps I use frequently?

If the iPhone 6 and 5S are too old like you say, Apple should be honest and simply exclude them from the list of supported iOS 11 devices. Some people are on budget, and believe it or not to this day iPhone 6 is still being sold by certain carriers. It is still a great phone even if it's running an older OS, and for some people that's all they need.

Why cripple it on purpose?

Don't Install! Massively slows your device down!
Did not slowed down my iPad 10.5, but there are glitches, most annoying for me: SpringBoard remains in portrait mode after portrait apps (iPad locked in portrait mode) & iPad hangs and I have to use power button to turn it off and on again.

iOS 11 destroyed my iPhone 6, which worked just fine before the update. Looks like Apple has decided for me that it's time to upgrade my iPhone next month when my contract is up. Love the new Control Center, but not worth the performance drop.

Downgrade.

I don't believe my stupidity I was caught out in the middle of the night and tapped the ok on the Apple Update nag, I thought it was message from my daughter. This morning most of my apps don't work and no way back to ios 10. My phone is unusably slow. If Apple think this is the way to keep a strong loyalty base they are in for a rude surprise. Their arrogance is astonishing - completely out of touch with their customers
20 years using Apple products, time to move on.

Yes there is, downgrade. If you backup to iTunes (not icloud) you have a version 10 backup you can restore to...

I have a 32-bit game that I miss. I’m sure other stuff have a few 32-bit apps here and there. But, “most”? How do you end up with most apps not updated? We’re talking more than four years.

it makes my ipad mini 4 go to lock screen at random while I'm using it. so I have to touch ID to get back to what I was doing. when it does this, sometimes the volume gets taken out and I have to restart the device. crap iOS

I have no idea why people are complaining. If anything iOS 11 sped up my iPhone 6S, theres a few bugs still but overall it's been great.
clearly there are more than a few bugs. cant you read all the issues people are having? smh

So you think Apple's developers should strip the OS of new features in order to squeeze it into a 5 year old phone? There comes a point when you have to leave old hardware behind. In the case of smartphones, 5 years is INCREDIBLY generous of Apple. To call it planned obsolescence is just plain silly, I'm sorry. Enjoy your Note 3 LMAO

My son enjoys his Note 3 greatly, thanks. I just got a Note8 and have ZERO iPhone envy.

No, Apple's developers should NOT strip the OS of new features.

Apple hardware designers should stop crippling their devices so that you have to buy new hardware in order for software to run. That's where the planned obsolescence happens, on the hardware side.

Maybe you were laughing too hard to grasp this. Apple definitely is laughing, all the way to the bank, with your money.

After seeing my iPhone 5c degrade significantly over the course of two years, from iOS 7 to iOS 9, I decided not to upgrade my new iPhone SE. It is still running iOS 9 it came with a year and a half ago, and is working great, apps still get updated.

The only app that simply refused to work without a software update is - and I kid you not - "Apple Store"

Just for the record, the SE runs 10 great - would probably be worth it to try and get its last version (not sure if its still getting signed for installations, they normally leave that working for a week or two extra after a .0 release). I'm holding off on 11 as well though. It sounds pretty rough from a performance / battery life perspective at this point - and frankly I don't like the idea that turning "off" blue-tooth or WiFi doesn't actually turn them off any more (that's annoying, however well intentioned, isn't doing what the switch tells the user it should do).

Software isn't magic or voodoo, despite what some people seem to think.

This idea that new software runs better on newer devices than older ones isn't remotely new, I really struggle to understand how people think it's surprising every year.

You can upgrade, or not upgrade, it's up to you. Maybe you want new features and are willing to take the performance hit.

More importantly, if they did that, they'd have to keep updating iOS 10 or no doubt face lots of claims of "forced obsolescence" even though it'd still be miles better in that regard than almost any Android phone.

Damned if they do, damned if they don‘t.
