Really. Nothing new for iPad on iOS 11, eh?

And how are the numbers and updates for Android devices?
What does the number of updates to Android have to do with the bugs in iOS 11? iOS 11 by and large appears to be the most bug laden iOS release to date. Maybe because iOS is now offered on the largest variety of Apple devices, who knows. I love Apple and their products, but iOS 11 has caused a lot of problems with what appears to be to a lot mor people’s devices than any prior iOS release.

You can upgrade, or not upgrade, it's up to you. Maybe you want new features and are willing to take the performance hit.

More importantly, if they did that, they'd have to keep updating iOS 10 or no doubt face lots of claims of "forced obsolescence" even though it'd still be miles better in that regard than almost any Android phone.

"miles better in that regard than almost any Android phone". Hilarious.

This would be easily solved if Apple allowed users to revert to the OS that runs best on their device. But Apple wants to keep claims that they're not "fragmented like Android is". It's this very thing what drove me away from iPhone forever.

The irony is that that fragmentation is not what cripples Apple phones, it's hardware. So them pushing and peddling the software that slows older devices to a crawl, and then cannot be reverted, is more than effective in driving the upgrade. You need to because the hardware can barely run on older devices; they're optimized for the OS they came with and only just.

Android phones do not suffer as a result of OS fragmentation, probably because they're usually loaded with powerful hardware specs that exceed the OS needs.

And Android functionality is ahead of iOS on the software side, so upgrading the OS to gain features becomes somewhat moot, unlike iPhone. I can live without iris scanning so long as I can split-screen multitask, have file-system access, run current apps, and customize the UI to MY liking. All features that Apple STILL doesn't have.

Yet iOS 11 breaks an iPad Pro. Ridiculous.

My son enjoys his Note 3 greatly, thanks. I just got a Note8 and have ZERO iPhone envy.

No, Apple's developers should NOT strip the OS of new features.

Apple hardware designers should stop crippling their devices so that you have to buy new hardware in order for software to run. That's where the planned obsolescence happens, on the hardware side.

Maybe you were laughing too hard to grasp this. Apple definitely is laughing, all the way to the bank, with your money.
No longer supporting a 5 year old phone with software updates isn’t “crippling hardware”. What an idiotic thing to say.

What does the number of updates to Android have to do with the bugs in iOS 11?

You’re often stuck with whatever you get. On low-end Android devices, you often get no updates at all. Not for security, not for bugs, not features.

iOS 11 by and large appears to be the most bug laden iOS release to date.

What’s your evidence for this? I don’t see this being significantly worse, better or otherwise notable a launch. The two wodely-reported bugs (Exchange and crackling) have been fixed within weeks.

Ridiculous indeed. iOS 11 is a massive boon to iPad Pro, and free at that.

Yeah I’m really not sure what bugs we’re talking about here. iOS 11 has been a solid release, I haven’t heard any complaints from my customers.

As a matter of fact, my friend who hates change and usually calls me to bitch and moan after every single software update actually texted me to tell me he thinks iOS 11 is a solid release and appreciates the new features.

I still have my Mini 4 and SE on 10.3.3. My 7 is has been on iOS 11 since the PB, but I'll probably wait until 11.1 to update the other two devices.

You still don't get it, yet call the concepts idiotic.

Let me dumb it down for you:

No, Apple should not support THEIR 5-year-old phone.

Why?

Because THEY crippled it 5 years ago.

They cripple ALL their devices so they run acceptably today. They don't want people to keep their devices. Apple is a hardware company first.

Get it yet?

Lemme dumb it down some more:

If you like iOS, upgrade your HARDWARE. Yearly.

If you cannot upgrade your hardware yearly, DON'T upgrade your software. It WILL frak up your device.

Really? I see plenty of iPad Pro users complaining about it. Which is not uncommon with Apple's .0 releases.

But ok, I'll take both their complaints and your assertions with a grain of salt and wait before upgrading my 2017 iPad Pro, if I upgrade it at all.

So many words, so little substance. 5 years in the smartphone universe is an eternity. You can expect a 5 year old device to support more complex and heavier operating system needs that have evolved over time. Even the apps themselves have grown in size and power requirements over that period of time. It came with iOS 6 on it originally. The phone is an antique and I’m actually amazed it even got iOS 10. Meanwhile both my parents are running a 6+ with iOS 11 and couldn’t be happier. There’s no “crippling” going on, but I hear that a lot from non-techie types who don’t fully understand how things work and expect their antique devices to be endlessly supported.

I am facepalming so hard. You need to read my last post again. Slowly.

Apple builds both the hardware and software. They know exactly how to tune their iOS devices to their software. So they have no need to build more robust hardware than their current iOS software will allow to run acceptably. So yes, 5 years ago, iPhone ran like a champ. Now it sucks (if you updated it).

Conversely, I have a Note3... a NOTE3, in my family that STILL runs like a champ, with CURRENT apps. No, it's not as fast as a Note 8. But it's close. Why? Because third-party manufacturers HAVE TO care about specs, and build their devices with more horsepower than necessary, just like PCs (and for the moment, Macs).

Apple doesn't, and won't. It's that simple. And Apple has even convinced it's users that specs don't matter, and that old devices are SUPPOSED to run like crap. That you are SUPPOSED to upgrade.

You clearly bought it and will seemingly continue to. Fine by me.

You know, no one forced you to update your iPhone software. Should have kept iOS 6. Your iPhone 5 would be running just like out of the box since you can’t seem to understand that antique hardware can’t run modern software.

Dont update: Battery life sucks so much in comparison to iOS 10. I should have waited this time... buggy like every major Apple Software Release. My fault.

iOS 11 makes my Mini 4 go to lock screen at random and sometimes when it does that it mutes it and I have to restart the device. I will likely restore backup today

Right. People that take Apple at their word are just stupid and should know better:

Apple: "This software will run on your device".
User: Installs software. "It runs like crap....so let me go back."
Apple: "Sorry, you can't, but our new OS adoption rate is higher than Android's!! :p"
User: "Um, so what am I supposed to do?"
Apple: "Buy a new device"
User: "OK, thanks Apple for the quick response and GREAT Customer Service. My new device works great now!!!"

The only thing I couldn't seem to understand is that you can lead a Cheerleader to water but you can't force it to drink.

Got it now though, thanks.

Because Android is another device OS and I'm curious about its adoption rate and how buggy releases have been, to the extent there have been timely releases.

Speaking anecdotally, as most people are here, I've had zero issues with iOS 11.

M’kay. Well, enjoy your out of date, nonsecure, and unsupported antique communications device.

And android isn’t water, it’s kool aid and I don’t drink that cheap crap.

I own numerous iPad's and just a couple of Android devices but I always chuckle and this comment. You do realize that both Apple and Google support their devices roughly about the same? They just happen to go about it in different ways. Apple likes to tie their "core apps along with their security and feature updates" with a FW release. Google goes about it in a different way.

They support their devices by updating their core apps on the Google Play Store. I'm still getting core app updates for devices running Jelly Bean and Lollipop. So while the features and security patches are frozen those devices are still beyond usable with Play Store updates.

I would hope so. Most android phones are probably still running jelly bean and lollipop.

Yeah, you got it all backwards.

My antique device IS supported because it's NOT an iPhone, but you missed it probably because you're the one drinking the Apple Kool-Aid, thinking it's water. At least it ain't cheap, right?

Go ahead and have another one, on me. Wait, you don't like "cheap" so maybe you should pay for it. It's OK, you're used to overpaying.

Nope, currently the biggest slice of the pie is Android 6 aka Marshmallow. And their core app updates include security features as well.

because it actually speeds up operations of your phone and makes it faster?
At the cost of losing access to some critical old apps?
[doublepost=1507131002][/doublepost]iOS 11 is just a crappy release anyways.
Random freeze while watching YouTube video using app.
I can also blame that is google which is ignorant to their customers to not update their app for better iOS 11 support.

I've updated my iPhone 6S, but I won't be updating my iPads any time soon. We still have a lot of old 32bit apps on them that we still use.

Some of the apps we've had since my iPhone 3G. I do appreciate that technology has moved on a long way since then, but Apple really ought to be able to code something into iOS11 to enable them to still run.

If you want to disable the iOS update Reminders, you can do the following listed below:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to “General”
  2. Choose “Storage & iCloud Usage”
  3. Go to “Manage Storage”
  4. Locate the iOS software update that is nagging you and tap on it.
  5. Tap on “Delete Update” and confirm that you want to delete the update*

True, but then it just gets re-downloaded the second you get a wifi connection. :/ Is there no fix just to block automatic update downloads?

That's the problem, it keeps downloading itself on my devices. There is no way to turn off the automatic download of Apple updates. It's annoying, and wastes space of those of us happy with their devices as is.

Even freaking windows has a setting to completely turn off updates!

That android argument is getting really really old, My friend has a three year old android 6 marshmallow, his device is still working, getting operating system and app updates

I have no complaints about issues on the iPad Pro and it is a pretty epic upgrade for the iPads but both mine and my wife’s iPhone 7 Plus have had more issues than any other iPhones with iOS releases.
