Sorry off topic but about TV app Apple TV Software 7.3 beta! ? On the developer site apple has put this out its beta for Apple TV 3rd Gen has new TV app but it appears to be in US Only. Thought someone might like to know.

Like others have said, they need a way for different accounts to watch it, but also, they are so far behind it will be hard to catch up. Netflix and Hulu already allow different accounts under one (however Hulu's interface is awful) and Amazon has an incredible x-ray feature. If Apple truly wants to join this game, then they needed to introduce amazing new features, not just basic features. It's so unfortunate that they have been playing catch up for years, instead of leading...

The biggest issue is no multiuser experience. TV Apps up next feature is great, but when many different people use the same Apple TV is gets cluttered, unorganized, straight up wrong recommendations if my wife watches an episode before I do, and just plain useless.

I'm not sure multiuser will address all the issues. I have shows I watch, my wife has shows she watches, and we have shows we watch together. Is that 2 users? Or do we make a third "user" for us together? I think that gets cluttered and unorganized as well.

Ideally there would be some kind of FaceID/Connect type of sensor that can detect who is watching and keeps track of pairings, so it would know the difference between me alone, wife alone, and wife and i watching together. But that seems unlikely to happen.

MacRumors writers keep missing that the TV App is now called "Apple TV app". The app itself is called Apple TV. The box has been renamed Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. There's no "TV App" anymore. I've read several articles where they keep getting this wrong.

Apple is essentially moving Apple TV from hardware to software so that it can be distributed to third parties like TV manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG and Vizio and streaming boxes like Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

I mean, it says right there in the description:

Where this leaves tvOS and its App Store has yet to be determined but I think we might either see new hardware in a new form factor and a new name (tvPod?) that supports Apple TV (the app) and tvOS apps with an emphasis on games via Arcade. Or we'll see Apple abandon the tvOS App Store with perhaps better integration between iOS apps and AirPlay so that iOS apps on iPhones, iPads and even on HomePod can have their content displayed on nearby TVs through AirPlay. This makes the most sense when seen in the context of Apple working with every major TV manufacturer to make AirPlay ubiquitous.

In the meantime, I think it would be useful if MacRumors writers learned the updated names of things. All this is confusing enough without having tech writers using the wrong names.

I wouldn't hold my breath - they have deliberately ignored local iTunes content for years. Probably my biggest disappointment with the AppleTV experience.....

The “computers” app has gotten much better. Wasn’t even searchable when they first released this version of Apple TV. Works pretty well with my collection, which is pretty huge. Even smart playlists work again.

They'll add that to a future update I'm sure.

You can also build your own list by adding shows to it. Currently it just tracks what you've watched but there's no way to build your own list of shows.

Wow. Like my list at netflix?

Would be asm if you could explain. Is it a section for your shows? I am so missing this in the app i use todat

It's actually HBO GO the one I have with my Cable provider, will that work too?

Seems like my answer is NO.

  • HBO NOW® is only accessible in the U.S. and certain U.S. territories. Certain restrictions apply. ® and © 2019 Home Box Office, Inc. All rights reserved.

Yes It will.

There is in the current TV App. You can ask Siri to "Add The Office to my Up Next" or you can click "Add to Up Next"on any show's page in supported apps (i.e. iTunes, TV app). This functions as "your list" of shows and all of them can be seen so you can get an overview and edit the list if needed.

You're absolutely right.

The thing that baffles me about today's Apple software is that there are so many inefficiencies and issues that could very easily be identified by actually USING the software on a day to day basis like a real user would. Similarly, the solutions to those problems would also be much easier to identify if you use the software long enough. It's strange that after so many years of Apple software development there is very little fundamental innovation to radically improve the way we use our devices.

correct, but that's limited to watch next which is clunky and not quite the same thing as what the new TV app has.

Yeah, yeah, great stuff I'm sure. But what I really need is not more apps that become big holes that my time disappears into, but apps that help me get stuff done more efficiently. I'm neither young enough, nor old enough, that I can fritter away the entire day being entertained.

First off, there is no dark mode in iOS 12.3, so these screenshots are misleading.

Secondly, the app is a complete mess. No personalization and blobs and blobs of shows to scroll through. I don’t even see local channels. This app needs a hell of a lot of work.

Where can you see all your shows? I can only see the shows i have not finnished. When waiting on a new season its impossible to know if its on my list or not

What is the difference

Can someone confirm if you can add a channel you already have from your cable provider or as a stand alone?

For example if I already have HBO, can I add it? Or you have to cancel that and pay within this new app?
I’m using it with my Cinemax sub now tied to AT&T Watch. A few days ago it didn’t work. So that’s a bonus. For my DirecTV Now sub I’m signed into all the apps that use single user sign on. They all show up in my Watch Now alongside my Hulu, Prime

That's a good point. I guess shows get removed from Up Next after you've finished watching them and only re-appear when a new episode gets added.

How is this TV app going to work? I have to buy an HBO subscription from within the app, or do I get the subscription directly from HBO and then activate it within the app?

Yeah even Netflix gets this right with profiles. The least Apple could do is have some kind of profile feature.

Anyway it's hard to see what the difference is with this new version. It already pulls content from different apps on the ATV (except Netflix of course), so I guess the main difference is the content plays within Apple TV instead of taking you to the third-party app? Whoop-dee-doo.

Let's not forget this wasn't always the case. Netflix added this functionality in after they rolled it out. Here is hoping Apple does something similar.
