You needed to know how Android works before making such observations.

Fully aware of Android’s workings. A big part of my day job revolves around Android. Google requires certain things to sell a device as Android certified (which is necessary to get access to the Play stor for example). Why can’t updates be one of those things? It’s one of the biggest things that Apple uses against Android every time they talk about iOS.

  • The swipe-up-from-the-bottom gesture used to bring up the dock, and then Control Center. Now it’ll bring up the app switcher, but you practically have to swipe from the bottom all the way to the top. Even then, it doesn’t seem to work consistently. Similarly, four-finger-swipexup to invoke the app switcher also doesn’t work consistently.
  • Photos now being an “app” in Messages, instead of right next to the camera is frustrating. It now takes more taps to send a photo to someone, if you’re not taking it from within Messages.

Swipe up until the dock shows, then swipe until the bottom of the current window is raised about half way up the dock and release. It should open the app switcher. For the multi finger gestures, this article may help: https://www.cultofmac.com/554433/new-ipad-gestures-ios-12/

For Photos in Messages, once you activate the App bar, it stays active so you can just tap Photos and select one.

I jumped the gun on the released day but didn't realise they took out group facetime video in it so I'm regretting it a little. The other thing I noticed as well is I'm having more trouble swiping up to go to the home screen / unlock my device after the update. It's not recognizing the swipe and it takes a longer time to unlock with faceid for some reason. really making the decision to jump the gun a regrettable one.

I upgraded my 6+ to iOS 12 from iOS 10. Internet based apps are loading faster and screen unlock using Touch ID is much faster.
Speedtest shows the same general speeds connecting to the internet through our Broadband or LTE.

I found one glitch using my lightning port connected OPPO HA-2 Amp/DAC and the Onkyo HF music player. Sound output from the iPhone was messed up when I disconnected the Amp/DAC and required a hard reset to fix.

Also, the landscape mode audio spectrum display under the EQ curve doesn't work when connected to the lightning port but displays correctly when disconnected from the lightning cable. It displays correctly when connected to audio out using the 3.5mm port or the iPhone speaker. I guess this is probably the Onkyo HF App having iOS 12 issues.

So far, I'm cautiously optimistic about iOS 12 on my 6+.

Was going to order an XR. Now I’m not, given the speed improvements iOS 12 brings to my iPhone 6. It just goes to show how bad iOS 11 was and why Apple had such an uphill battle challenging people’s beliefs that it was artificially slowing its products during the whole battery fiasco. So, with a relatively new battery in the 6 and a decently quick UI experience, the urge to upgrade has waned significantly. Thanks for saving me £800, Apple!

iOS 12 is the Snow Leopard of iOS. It is the best release since iOS 6.1.6. The most stable, the most feature packed and definitely the most refined. My 7 Plus feels just like it did on 10.3.3 if not better in some respects. The battery life is worse but my phone currently has about 84% capacity so it's due for a replacement.

It has brought my iPad Air 1 from the brink of the gadget graveyard. On 10.3.3 it was still pretty fast but 11.0 slowed everything down to a crawl. 11.4.1 improved things somewhat but iOS 12.0 has returned it to almost where it used to be. Booting is faster and everything is smooth. Apps take much longer to install but the A7 is much slower than A10-12. It's just a dual core chip with a sub 2 GHz clock speed. It's remarkable that it's still usable 5 years later which is more than can be said of most Android devices and even older iOS ones.

Apple has a Federal gov’t settlement offer - for $29 they will replacement the battery on your iPhone but that expires December 30th!

Updated iPad 4 to iOS 7. Didn't like the design, but the worst part was that performance was awful and crashes were ubiquitous, even after a full restore and set up as new.
Afterwards, I said goodbye to every single iOS update. Whichever the device, if it's mine, it will be in its original version. iPhone 5s, iOS 8 (bought late); 6s, iOS 9; Pro 9.7, iOS 9; iPod Touch 5G, iOS 6; 7+, iOS 10. Whichever device I buy from now on will never be updated. Regardless of Apple's performance promises and regardless of how many features Apple wants to throw at the updates.

Lol. Good luck with that.

What do you mean? I'm having no issues. Really happy with my decision.

Hi

I currently have an iPhone 7, and I normally update via my Mac (High Sierra) via iTunes. iTunes showed there was an update for the iPhone, but when I went to update, it didn't work. Had to do the update via App store on the iPhone which worked fine. My iTunes is up to date.

The iPhone seems to be working fine with iOS12 etc, but iTunes isn't recognising it at all after I try to sync to the iMac. 'Photos' recognises it straight away and imports photos ok. I presume it's an iTunes issue?

Sound to me that your copy of iTune is not the current version. Go to iTune and under Help menu, selection- check for updates!

No matter what Google does, they'll never match Apple when it comes to this. I don't know why they can't strong-arm OEM's. I mean Microsoft never let OEM's decide when Windows Updates are applied.

And that’s what happens when you give complete freedom of your OS...

I was beta testing iOS 12 and impressed by it. One iPhone updated to GM just after Apple event and other one was updated as soon as iOS 12 was publicly available. So far positive. People will upgrade once Apple will nag them to update.

I can’t even blame those who hesitate to upgrade. iOS 11 was a disaster for many months. iOS 12 seems to be quite the opposite though. At least my X doesn’t feel like I’m using a 5-year old device lol
I must be lucky then, I can not remember any cignificant problems on iOS 11' maybe it's the fact that zi don't game on my ipad

Well there's no new features in it unless you have an X or above so it's hardly surprising that people aren't rushing to upgrade. Besides, after what a buggy mess iOS11 was, it's not surprising people aren't rushing.

Except that there are certainly new things for essentially all devices, and iOS 12 had a specific focus to improve things that various people had issues with when it came to iOS 11. So it would actually be in the interest of those people who found iOS 11 to be bad for them to upgrade.

...

iOS 12 is an update that brings significant speed and performance improvements to older devices, so most customers installing the software should see notable speed improvements over iOS 11 after updating.

On the iPhone 6 Plus, for example, apps launch up to 40 percent faster, while the keyboard can appear up to 50 percent faster. Opening the camera on the Lock screen to take a photo can be done 70 percent faster.

Apple has made animations smoother and more responsive across the operating system, so accessing Control Center, scrolling in apps, or swiping up when multitasking feels more fluid.

iOS 12 also includes optimizations for when the operating system is under load. Apps launch up to twice as fast under a heavy load, as does the Share Sheet.

...

Would be nice if someone could post up in a follow up thread, some objective way to measure these performance claims.

I saw some initial posts of what might have been geekbench scores in one of the other threads...did a search on 40% faster, did not get any results for this thread, don't have time to read through all of it now?

I had the battery replaced for $29 @BESTBUY last week, was only down to 79% capacity after 4yrs daily use/charging every other day- via d/l app, and Apple's own testing app connected by BB associate via WiFi, showed same level, saying battery needed to be replaced, irrc. I still can't tell any difference, was throttling ever enabled then...ios 10.3.2.

So the performance claims for the ip6+ are ios 11.x.x vs ios 12? if so, would be nice if there is also an objective way to test difference btw orig ios on the 6 series, vs ios12, or others, like ios9.x.x.

My guess(will wait for a few incremental updates b4 going to ios 12) is that I will not much notice those speed increases. Shame Apple has such restrictive ios/Mac OSx d/l policies...must want every1 to buy those new, exceedingly expensive ip's that only the status symbol seekers can 'afford'. I sure don't want any cell phone in my pocket or on person that costs $1000...ppl get robbed/killed for much less.

Or maybe they were waiting until a weekend and are happy with iOS 11.
They had to suffer all through iOS 11 right till 11.4.1. So it makes sense that they rather don’t want to fix what isn’t broken. There is always a chance Apple might screw up even more.

There’s no way to prove that statement, only conjecture and maybe timing as well.
It’s undeniable that they were slowing down phones without consent.

But not everybody updates the second an update hits. Imo, Most people who aren’t on windows 10 don’t apply updates. So your hypothesis is driven because you disliked ios 11, which I ultimately thought was ok, my hypothesis is driven because I’ve seen people wait, just because.

Power management is not about consent.

I won't update until they release iOS 12.1

I had major issues after upgrading to iOS 11 as soon as it was released. I lost hundreds of photos and videos, phone would freeze, apps would just shutdown suddenly and more other issues.

I know most people have had a great experience with iOS 12 but I just don't fancy risking the repeat of the heartache I suffered last time.
