I did an alternative FaceID using my mask...works as well.
But this new feature works well - just installed on my 11 Pro Max.
I would have thought the variations in crinkles of a mask would break FaceID, so it’s interesting to read that it works.

Wonder what face id enthusiasts willl think about face id now...still on touch id

TouchID works with latex / nitrile gloves.

It doesn’t with these.

C'mom Apple...just let me get the home screen on my 11 PM without having to swipe. Let that be an settings option for FaceID to go straight to the home screen then problem solved.

uh... what about using less secure method such as Passcode in these situations. ? That's better than "Apple saves the day again" slogan..

That's what it's there for.

Awesome, although I'd rather have that under the screen fingerprint sensor. I hope this works with 3rd party apps like password managers as well.

I don't see why it wouldn't. Isn't apple's way of handling FaceID in that the secure enclave checks and if it passes then it tells the app in question "Yep the face matches" that way the app doesn't load.

If I recall correctly as well, Android doesn't do it that way which is why the Pixel 4's face unlock was such trash because every app that wanted to use it would have to be updated to look for the face instead of a fingerprint.

I'm getting occasional "UNSUPPORTED DEVICE" when plugged into my 2017 iMac ... a quick disconnect and reconnect ... the iPhone then charges w/o this message ... its an iApple cable as well (non-frayed)

I have noticed, after about 4 weeks of wearing a facemask now, FaceID has started to unlock while wearing it.
Wait, really? Then again, iOS does say that in addition to learning your appearance, you can also set it up to recognize an alternate appearance.

I second this!!! Kind of defeats the purpose of having face unlock in the first place if you still have to swipe to unlock! If Android phones that have face unlock can do this then why can't Apple's? I mean, with Touch ID, you don't have to do an additional step to unlock the phone, just press the home button with one of your registered fingers and then boom, you're in.

I kinda miss Touch ID now with the whole pandemic, but not the home button, i read some somewhere that they're working on a on-screen TouchID wouldn't that be nice. Can someone confirm or deny this rumors, they're giving me false hope 😅

A couple of years ago, I read about how easy it is for some devices to defeat Apple's iPhone login security if owners used short passcodes were used, so I went to a > 10 character passcode with the standard assortment of upper- and lower-case letters, digits, and "special" characters. Using the passcode does not feel like an improvement, as I stand there tapping in all those characters in the supermarket checkout line.... twice: once to unlock the phone, then to use Apple Pay.

Come on, clever Apple engineers, give us Face+Mask ID™.

Modern problems require modern solutions.

Ah, so maybe being old is my problem, lol what else is new.

Fortunately Face ID works for me most of the time but I can certainly empathize with medical caregivers (and mask wearers in general at present). I like Touch ID but not in winter when my hands get chapped over forgetting to wear gloves: I end up having to delete and re-enter thumb and a couple finger prints off and on, all during that season. I also suspect that dehydration can be more of an issue for the elderly and that does alter how a fingerprint scans.

My vote for Apple's work on this in the near future would be retain Face ID, work on its ability to hone recognition with partial obscurity of the face, but also keep Touch ID (perhaps under glass bc the hardware button can be wear-prone I guess, although I've not had issues with it).

FaceID does not allow you to set up an alternate appearance with a mask on. You get a an error saying “Face Obstructed”. I tried to bypass it by showing my face, then scanning with the mask in place and I cannot get it to unlock wearing a mask. This is my previous experience also.

pro tip, use Touch ID.
We need a phone that has both.

This is good, but what about fixing the horrible Bluetooth connection whether on their iPhone 11 or the iOS. I never had this problem with my iPhone 6. Even with their AirPods Pro The connection is terrible. Maybe getting a traffic ticket for not using handsfree. Almost ready for a Pixel phone. Get with it Apple.
