Would be cool if there was a haptic button on the lock screen to toggle between mask mode and no mask mode. While in mask mode it would instantly just ask for the passcode.

Most the people at the store don't even know how to follow a simple arrow on the floor, much less stand six feet apart, and much less wear a mask.

I had to go to a Walmart 30 minutes out into the country the other day to get meds that weren't in stock and I would say in the country, only 5% of people are wearing masks and making sure they're not crowding isles. It was barely any different than any other time I've been to Walmart. I was lucky to have an N99 mask with multiple replaceable inserts for my woodworking hobby I started last year because that place was a death trap!

Maybe we'll get touchID back. That'd be a compelling feature for an upgrade. 5G certainly isn't.
Got the SE 2020 to deal with the mask. Would still definitely want both. most things are better with face but I still like unlock a little better sometimes with touch and ApplePay I like better with touch so I can just hold my thumb on the home button as I move the phone to the reader DING DONE. Plus I like authenticating new apps with touch. Anything involving the double power tap is clunkier for me than touch.

Since the iPhone 12 is already cooked and done, we can't expect anything new with the biometric login method.
But it's likely that the CoV will be with us for several more years (if not to some degree forever) and face masks may be a part of human life in densely populated areas for a long time to come. Years.
If that's the case, it wouldn't surprise me if the iPhone 13 comes with a CoV pandemic friendly log in method. I see TouchID returning back to the iPhone.

Yeah, they could add that as an available option in control center. Could be useful for people who have to wear masks for jobs anyway so might as well keep it around. Just have it go straight to passcode. It would also be nice if they could add swipe for the keypad like the keyboard. I remember old Android phones had this to make it a little faster.

My passcode is complicated, as I prefer. I hope for a solution with faceID to mitigate this rather than default to the passcode. Have no idea how without comprising security though.

Some places just aren't roomy enough or they need more markers. Sheetz has the feet every six feet back from the registers, but people were standing right next to them waiting for food. They definitely need more sense, but Sheetz could also have spots marked away from the register line feet for people to wait for food. And yea some lady at this smaller market we went to kept going the wrong way.

This is why I'm still using an 8+. I wear a surgical mask for long periods of time. It's not just unlocking the phone, but all passwords & ApplePay. It's a pain when I use my iPadPro. Please release a combo FaceID / under-screen Fingerprint sensor, Apple.

I thought about getting 8+ but that was pretty old. TouchID is undone when trying to wear gloves, even having both won't do.

This really highlights how poor FaceID is at identifying people. It should continue to work with the mask on. If you look at a friend or family member, you can still identify them with a mask on. We should reasonably expect FaceID to do the same.

Would be cool if they could do some sort of enhanced simple pass code. You could keep a long alpha-numeric passcode for maximum security. And full exposed face FaceID would also unlock immediately. But if it senses a mask, it can ask for a shortened numeric passcode that will only work if some of my face characteristics are also correct (i.e., it has to see my eyes are correctly spaced AND I have to enter my 1234 passcode). If someone guesses the short passcode but the eyes aren’t right, it won’t open. That way the less secure passcode isn’t enough to unlock....it at least needs some visual confirmation that it’s you, even though it might not be enough to unlock the phone on its own.

Power tip: when you swipe up on current versions, press FaceID text in the center of the screen to avoid waiting for it to scan your face and fail, prompting the password after that.

Yup. I was at a funeral and saw someone do this when I first learned about it.

DO SOMETHING BETTER!

This is not nothing but not nearly enough anyways. I would appreciate it more if they really thought about the problem some more. Offer us either a temporary disabling of locking the phone or ID by watch just like with a Mac...
Simplifying the password is no option as it would allow somebody to glimpse it and then really go rogue on your device!

The iPhone 12 / iOS14 better have a better user experience when wearing masks or I'm seriously thinking of not purchasing another iPhone!
We can all expect to keep wearing masks for longer now...this is FaceIDs death in many ways. Either Apple stops acting like a child and finally include a TouchID sensor simply on the rear side or (for 100 times the research-money) under the screen, I don't care.

I was never a fan of FaceID over TouchID but during the pandamic, I can either choose to be hugely annoyed because having to enter my strong password every minute or so or not using my smartphone anymore!
Since I wear masks in the lab at work too, this annoyance is not new to me. What's new to me is to be annoyed during shopping or commuting as well now!

Seriously Apple, THINK! So many ways to improve this:
  • put the damn sensor on the rear of the phone if you can't get it to work under the screen!
  • offer an option for the Apple watch to unlock the phone when <20cm away
  • another option would be a software mode allowing the user to make certain apps available without unlocking! Like a shopping list, music app etc. etc.
  • offer sampling your current/altered Face including mask much quicker and temporarily by typing in the password ONES e.g. and temporarily accept this as your new face....

lol since when does apple release a x.5 update? Have a hard time recalling them doing anything.5
There was MacOS 10.4.11. Caught out some developers comparing version numbers alphabetically and thinking 10.4.11 came before 10.4.2.

In the U.K. they limit the number of people they let in the store. Once your inside, plenty of space. Outside, long long queues (super long because most people leave two meters between their shopping trolley and the next person).

The problem isn’t identifying people. One in a million people looks similar enough to you to unlock your phone. But one in thousand would match you enough with a face mask.
