Honestly, as unsuspecting as this new feature was for iOS 13, I think this has to be one of the most well received features that Apple added. I would take this feature even over the overly-glorified Dark mode.

Well, it depends. How often do you get deliveries or call Uber? Twice a week? How about spam calls? Twice a day? Then it would be worth using this feature. Also, I feel most ppl here in the US use text instead of calling, even Uber, DoorDash or any of that, so I feel it wouldn’t be a problem.

If this puts companies that should be (and in some areas are) illegal out of business because people aren't answering their phones then all the better

A lot of people seem concerned about spam voicemails, but while I get plenty of spam phone calls, they hardly ever leave a voicemail. When I do get an unsolicited voicemail its usually a wrong number confirming a doctor's appointment or something in a different language.

What I really want to happen is the phone function being changed to a notification banner, not something that takes over the entire screen if you happen to be reading an article or playing a game or something its really distracting to suddenly have the entire screen change.

I would rather it block the number and not got to voicemail at all. I’ve been getting “Unknown” call with no number to block and international incoming calls too as these need to be blocked as well.

OK, if you’re blocking the number, then it’s likely a scam call, which was likely using a spoofed number anyways, by blocking your the phone number really doesn’t do much in terms of stopping those types of calls today, unless it’s someone _specifically_ you’re blocking. That said, I would rather have a call go straight to voicemail, because I don’t want to be interrupted during my time, during my day having these uneducated morons trying to steal my information (Which will never happen, because I’m smarter than they are.).

In the Phone section of the Settings app in iOS 13, there's an interesting new toggle called "Silence Unknown Callers," which appears to do exactly what the name suggests. With this feature enabled, calls received by people not in your contacts list seem to be sent straight to voicemail.

We tested out the Silence Unknown Callers feature this week, and it worked well. When an iPhone with the option enabled received a call from a number that wasn't a known number in contacts, the phone never rang - the call was sent directly to voicemail.

While we haven't done extensive testing, we did try introducing an unknown number by referencing it in an email because iOS can recognize phone numbers that way, but even when the number had been previously sent to us, phone calls from that number were still muted.

Silence Unknown Callers seems to be an effective way to limit incoming calls to numbers that you already know, blocking out the rest from causing your phone to ring.

It's a simple, useful solution to the deluge of spam calls that many of us in the United States receive on a daily basis. It's not identifying spam calls or risky numbers specifically so it's not the most elegant solution available, but it works for cutting down on unwanted calls.

This isn't a setting that you're going to want to enable if you're worried about missing some legitimate calls from numbers that you don't know, but all calls do go to voicemail, so when a legitimate call does come in, you can just call the person back.

Silence Unknown Callers will be available to everyone this fall when iOS 13 launches alongside new iPhones.

[doublepost=1559855018][/doublepost]This just may be the most awesome new feature!

I've started answering them and immediately reporting them to the call blocking apps. The sooner the numbers get blocked, the fewer people they can scam, the less profit they make.

If you mean that callers that have their caller id blocked so that it shows, “unknown caller”- you are correct.
If you mean callers with numbers in your blocked list, you are incorrect.

Blocked callers get sent to vm only “per se”... they leave messages to the ether. You will NOT get any voicemail from callers on your blocked list.
I don't think you're correct. I believe blocked people CAN send you voicemail. Can someone confirm?

I wonder how many people wrote feature suggestions to apple. I know I wrote twice, and addressed a letter to Tim Cook email asking for a simple send calls to voicemails that aren’t in my address book, WITHOUT using do not disturb and muting my texts.

If this works the way I hope, I agree: HALLE-FRICKIN-LUJAH!!!!!

huh? big whoop, this is not new, lol,
I have already been doing this in iOS 12 using Do Not Disturb.
You just have Do Not Disturb turned on with Silence Always and Allow Calls From set to All Contacts.
That does the same thing!
So they added a toggle, but can you set that toggle to be off during certain times of the day? if not then it's actually less of a feature than what I'm doing. I leave a couple hours completely open after 9pm.

Not impressed.

Wow for me not usable at all. How do couriers contact you guys? In my country by phone. Also for example when an Uber calls you it will too send it to voice mail. ..food delivery? Same thing.
This is a good point. I live in FL and when I have Panera delivered to my job they end up calling from a number from Ohio or Iowa so I never answer. I’d save it but it’s a different number each time so having “Panera 1-17” in my phone isn’t elegant at all.

what I do now in iOS 12 using Do Not Disturb (silence, allow calls from contacts), is simply swipe down and and turn off Do Not Disturb temporarily if I just requested some service like Uber. I can just look when possible and temporarily add the number in my contacts, I've done that before.

Working great for me, blocked a spam call from the “social security admin” telling me that my number had been compromised ‍♂️

Would be nice to have a control center toggle for it, many times I do need to get calls from unknown numbers

Not sure this would be useful for me.

When my doctor's office calls me, the number always shows up as "unknown".

If I make a call to a business not in my contacts and I leave a message, I would want them to be able to reach me without playing a round of phone tag or having to add them to my contacts. Perhaps a useful addition could be to check the outgoing log as well in addition to the contacts when trying to determine whether the phone should ring.

Basically, if two people unknown to each other have this feature enabled, they will play phone tag forever.

Your think Apple would provide their own caller id solution. Almost like iMessage for calls. If a call comes in you can see other people's responses or after the call make a comment.
I'm searching Google all the time to see what other people say.
Apple could also provide a web search pop up while its ringing to see who it is or even a whitepages lookup.

unless you're doing this all the time, just turning the feature off when you're expecting a call doesn't seem all that irritating.

So this is what; an expansion on the DND allowing calls from Contacts only?

So if you use your phone for business of some kind it is likely of not much use.
just saying .... :(

Just to add ... I have had this feature on my Razer for ... as long as I have had the phone.
I don't use it as I get business calls on this line also.

I do the same. But DND silences calls and notifications, while this feature only applies to calls.

im hoping for a block for callers explicitly named 'unknown caller'

I don't think I'm ready to block everyone not in my contacts

I just want a way to block "No caller ID" calls. For me, they're 100% spam.

As a result of this, I've turned off voicemail, as the only people who leave voicemail are the spam/scam calls

Would this new feature work if I don't have voicemail enabled?

A ton of valuable features throughout all the releases this year. I don’t understand the mindset that Apple isn’t innovating or making their products better, I see it every day.
