As long as they reduce the phone price by the equivalent of not providing the earbuds and chargers I am all in. The problem is that Apple is greedy and following some CPG companies that reduce the size of their packages (less Oreos for the same price, less cereal for the same price, etc...) while charging the same.

Rumors have suggested that Apple's iPhone 12 models will not include power adapters or EarPods in the box, and a minor code tweak in iOS 14.2 seemingly confirms Apple's plan to sell the new devices without EarPods.

In iOS 14 and earlier versions of iOS, there's a mention of reducing exposure to RF energy by using the "supplied headphones," which is the same wording that Apple has used for years now.

In iOS 14.2, this wording has been tweaked to say just "headphones," removing the "supplied" part of this statement. The full code reads as follows:All prior mentions of headphones have included "supplied," and the deliberate elimination of the word in the new code strongly suggests Apple has no plans to "supply" headphones with the upcoming iPhone 12 models.

The mention of "supplied headphones" in iOS 14 is on the top, and the new wording without the word "supplied" is on the bottom

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in May that the iPhone 12 models will not come with EarPods in the box, with Apple instead planning to introduce some kind of AirPods promotion to encourage iPhone buyers to purchase AirPods as well.

There have also been rumors that Apple is eliminating the power adapter from the iPhone 12 box, which means customers will get an iPhone 12 and a USB-C to Lightning cable with nothing else.

The removal of the power adapter was all but confirmed when Apple released the Apple Watch Series 6 models without a power adapter, but until now, we've heard little else about the potential removal of the EarPods.

Apple has long offered EarPods with new iPhone models to give customers a way to listen to music, make calls, and more, but Apple has been aiming to transition to Bluetooth-only headphones since the launch of the AirPods and the removal of the headphone jack from the iPhone lineup.

Current iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models ship with EarPods that have a Lightning connector to plug into the Lightning port, but it appears the iPhone 11 devices will be the last to come with headphones in the box.

Apple is said to be removing the power adapter and the EarPods from the iPhone 12 box in order to cut costs, as the 5G chips in the new devices are expensive. The change will also allow Apple to slim down the size of the iPhone box, reducing packaging and environmental waste.

Well... stelletje krenten they are.

Honestly I still see a lot of people still using these wired Apple buds. I use mine on my 6s and MacBook all the time adjusting the volume on the bud works great. The wireless Airpods you can’t adjust volume on the fly quickly like you can on the wired buds. I just hope Apple doesn’t discontinue them.

I’ll take one of your usb-c ones, since I’ve been using iPhones since 2009 and have virtually none. Thanks in advance.
You do understand I was being sardonic. And while I don't have a "closetful", I literally have a shopping bag with about 5 lightning earpods and about 5 5w chargers and 5 ipad power bricks.

You're on your own with a 5w usb-c. Don't have any.

Personally I think this is bs! The earbuds aren’t necessarily a big deal except for the fact that the lightning port is proprietary and the only way to physically connect to the device. Now the power brick is another story if your like me and have been using apple exclusively for years, then You’ve had to buy in to their “apple only” shenanigans and now have 10-20 useless bricks and none that you will need (usb-c). why am I now paying (again) for their constant indecisiveness and money grabs? Add to that an extremely piss poor offering this year... the only things that got me excited about the new phones (oled screens, lidar) got nerfed. So what are you trying to offer me here apple? Outdated tech combined with a half updated port that you don’t even fully support? Me thinks your wise to keep hoarding all that money!

I use mine daily on my iPhone and iPad mainly for video watching or calls.

As Apple are painting this to be about saving the planet by not including unwanted items, why don’t they have an ‘opt in option’? If you don’t use them or want them then don’t have them included. If you do, tick a box when ordering.

I think this is more about maximising profit though personally.

For every person who needs an adaptor, I bet there are 5-10 who do not. We have now been through over well 10 years of smart phone ownership where many people trade in their old phone to Apple or their carrier when they upgrade. Most carriers don’t require the power adaptor at trade in. So, people keep accumulating adaptors. I believe the net effect is positive, even if the way Apple is going about it is lousy from a PR perspective. Apple could easily solve that problem by giving people who actually need an adaptor a voucher or discount if they buy at the same time as the phone.
... and in those 10 years how many apple products have shipped with a usb-c brick? Only the most recent and expensive iPads to my knowledge. An $800 iPad comes with one, why can’t an $800 phone? Even that’s not a good comparison because the iPad needs a 18w adapter and the phones won’t.

What point is that? That should I get the iphone 12 I won't need:
- power brick
- cable
- earpods?

But another person, who hasn't been in tech world ever and doesn't have a computer, USB accessories, spare power bricks or cables will have to buy one?

This assumes the connector on the iphone 12 is lightning, which I highly suspect it will be.

no one needs a 5w charging brick or EarPods. I'm glad Apple removed them so that they can spend some of the extra money saved in other areas of the product. people who think Apple is simply pocketing the extra money that was saved by not including these extra accessories are likely wrong.
Hahahahahaha!!!! Thanks for the laugh. I needed it.

How is this reducing packaging and environmental waste if I have to order a power supply or headphones from someone else and they have to ship it to me in a separate box through a separate carrier as part of a separate transaction?
Do you have to use a new, different power supply and pair of headphones with every single new device you get? The power supplies and headphones for my last several devices are still sitting in their boxes.

Yeah, I do.
I don't buy phones (or iPads or whatever) every year or even every 2 years.
I use my stuff until it falls apart or they no longer serve me well so by that time there is a good possibility that new peripherals are needed.

What's interesting is that because of the scale at which Apple operates, there's actually a significant cost and environmental savings that come just from reducing the weight of each iPhone. When you're shipping a 100 million of them a year, it adds up.

The standard 5W Apple charger weighs around 23 grams, and the EarPods are about 12 grams, which means that those two accessories together add about 35 grams by themselves, not even including any extra packaging that's required. 35 grams may not sound like a lot, but for 100 million iPhones? That's 3.5 billion grams, or about 4,000 tons in extra weight per year that Apple has to pay to move around the globe.

To put it in perspective, that's the weight of about ten Boeing 747's, or half the displacement of an Arleigh Burke class destroyer.

Most of this stuff is shipped on planes, cargo ships, and trucks, almost of which still burn at least some fossil fuels. Lighter and smaller packaging mean more iPhones can be moved around in a single shipment — what might have taken ten trucks might now only require seven, for example.

I do sort of wonder what Apple has discovered from recent customer surveys, but it wouldn't surprise me if it found that a significant number of iPhone buyers never even unpack their EarPods. Many simply don't like Apple's design and prefer to use another brand of headphones, while others opt for Bluetooth, but there are also a lot of people who use their iPhone primarily as a phone and really have no need to plug any kind of headphones into it at all.

Easy enough for Apple to have a site that new Apple device owners can go to to request the charger or earpods from, if their device supports them.

I have several never used chargers & have never used any of the earpods

The charging brick yes. I would say they should include a higher wattage charger as most normal people have no idea they can charge their phone faster. Definitely disagree on headphones. You’re on a macrumors forum vs. the real world where most people use earbuds and they wear out over time.

if it's something you use a lot, you shouldn't be relying on an average pair of earbuds. it's like finding the cheapest mattress to sleep on for the next 10-15 years.
