I don't think it's a problem if the price reflects the reduction in accessories. In 2020, who doesn't have many headphones, earphones or chargers?
Do you realize how short a lifespan headphones & cords have? My EarPods last me about 2 years on average before I have to go to the store and buy a replacement. I'll take a new pair when I spent $1000 on a new phone, thank you very much.

I don't care as I never use them, however there has to be some benefit to the consumer. This is going to save Apple millions... so how will that translate to our pockets? It won't,
It will benefit the consumer in the form of same or lower prices. Your assuming it won't, but the opposite assumption is equally valid as the price hasn't been revealed.
it'll just mean we have to fork out extra for a charger and earphones ourselves, which you could argue we do already since Apple pack crap ones with the Phone.
True those who don't like the airpods will buy another pair, either from Apple or from another manufacturer.

What would be nice is to put AirPods in the box instead.... but it won't happen. I've given up on Apple though, I sold my iMac, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, AirPort Extreme and MacBook, they're dated now and I have no use for any of them. However I haven't upgraded because other people offer better solutions now, [/quote]
To those others that offer better solutions, it's entirely subjective and based on your individual use case.
Apple are charging increasingly more and more at a time when they're falling behind. I used to be able to justify paying twice as much for a MacBook because they had the build quality and still had an Nvidia GPU in them. However now everyone is producing equally as well built Laptops, only with a far greater warranty and they\re repairable too. I paid £600 for my Lenovo and it has specs better than a MacBook that is 4 times as much..
Mac is still a niche player for Apple and I don't think Apple really cares.
I'm still using my iPhone, but Apple blocking Game Pass and other services really makes me think go switching to Android. If Android had a phone like the SE with as good specs I would switch, however it cost me £350 and Apple has their market on their own right now.
Based on one's use case it would determine which phone and which model is best for them.
I'm still using a 2018 Mac Mini, which I bought because I needed something since I sold my Mac and iMac. However I got it on sale for £299, I'm not giving Apple £2500 for a new Mac any more. It is only my bedtime surfing the web PC, it isn't my main work PC any more as I've gone back to Windows.... which is a shame because Windows has a lot wrong with it.
The decison about wanting a charger and earpods with the iphone 12 should be made at the point of sale by the customer. If the customer is already an iphone owner and they are wanting to upgrade to the latest model then depending on the model of the iphone they already own, it should be determined if the charger and earpods they already own are compatible with the latest model and if they are, all that needs to be purchased is the iphone and no extras. But if the customer has never owned an iphone before then a charger and earpods should be supplied as standard at no extra cost to the customer.
I suggested something along these lines a while back. Don't know how difficult it is to implement something like this, or even if Apple wants to do this. Seems like, in my anecdotal limited world, a minority of people have absolutely no BT headphones, wired headphones or charging brick. Frankly with the iphone 12 pro max as was suggested above the 20w usb-c charger should be included in the box. But who knows?

To be honest I use my iPhone for everything other than talking on the phone through the earpiece on the device. That RARELY happens. RARELY. 😄

Honestly speaking, do people still even use these nowadays?

I've not used any supplied buds since my first Android over 10 years ago.

i haven’t used supplied buds in about as long, but I know several people who do. I actually give mine to a friend whose earbuds tend to break after a year or so, but he only upgrades his phone maybe every three or four years.

He’s in his 30s, and doesn’t really care about tech. My stepmom (in her 70s) also uses her supplied buds, as do several others I know.

I think most of us on this site wouldn’t feel the sting of this, but we aren’t a good sample. I think this is a BS move by Apple.

if it's something you use a lot, you shouldn't be relying on an average pair of earbuds. it's like finding the cheapest mattress to sleep on for the next 10-15 years.
It does the job, so what? My experience is that even way more expensive headphones from the usual brands tend to have really bad, noisy microphones attached to them. I don't know what Apple is doing right, but the microphones that come with the earbuds are actually pretty solid and I see a lot of people using them for video calls because they are so reliable and offer decent sound.

I'm saying if something matters so much to you, you'd be investing at least some $ into what you need. If you think EarPods is worth $29, then buy it. For the majority of users, listening is probably the primary use case of EarPods but EarPods don't provide the audio quality of other earbuds or the ease of use of AirPods. Finally, judging by the sales of AirPods, tens of millions of customers are throwing their EarPods away when they upgrade to a new iPhone but we're all paying for that in the iPhone purchase price.

I rather have Apple allocate the extra budget saved from not including EarPods (and charging brick) into software or hardware (of course Apple will pocket some of that, but at least there's extra budget for other areas).

Yeah, among my non-techie friends, almost everybody who uses earphones just uses the included EarPods since they’re good enough. However, I’d also say I know at least as many people who don’t use headphones with their iPhone at all, simply because they use it more as a phone or for non-audio focused things like messaging and social media.

Here is an idea. Let them choose whether they want earpod, charger, cable or not. If they just want the phone, give them discounts. This way, people with a lot of chargers/BT headphones at home can save some money. It’s a simple problem.

They’re going to just sell the box at to this point. Wasn’t there an article on here stating how elegant the box will be?
Next year to save the environment and be carbon neutral, Apple will not even ship anything to you. You are buying just for the thought of buying a new iPhone.

How is this reducing packaging and environmental waste if I have to order a power supply or headphones from someone else and they have to ship it to me in a separate box through a separate carrier as part of a separate transaction?

I'm so tired of this feel-good nonsense that doesn't actually have a net positive at all. In fact, it's a net negative. Well done Tim.
You are probably the only person left who does not have a drawer full of USB chargers, why would you ‘have to’ order another one?!

Well, not everyone needs to order a power adapter and headphones, most people already have them at home. (I bet no more than 20% of people does not have power brick and headphones)
Moreover, they can reduce the size of the iPhone box itself to 1/3. Which means they can ship 3 times more boxes per flight, reduce carbon footprint.

Are you sure you have plenty of USB-C chargers? The rumor indicates that Apple will ship lightning to USB-C cable, not the old USB-A type.

I would put the lightning to usb-c cable in a draw and use one of the ten usb-a to lightning cables with one of the 5 iPad power bricks.
So you assume any regular iPhone 12 buyers would be just like you, and would’ve already had 5 iPads. Or that iPhone 12 buyers must be existing multiple iDevice users...

I guess people already have their strange logic fixed in. I guess kudos to Tim Cook for being able to continue Jobs reality distortion field.

Correct. I believe that many people (as apple probably believes) that those that have excess chargers and cables and EarPods outnumber those that don’t.

Those who do not have access to any usb charging device or EarPods are probably in the minority. ( which is why Samsung is rumored to follow this umor)

It’s not for me to judge the distortion field over the hard facts that apple probably has regarding this rumored change.

This has nothing to do with paper packaging. This has to do with millions of AirPods that get thrown into the trash before their lifespan is complete because we get a shiny new set every year we replace our phones. How much energy and how much waste (toxic or otherwise) on this planet is created when a set of AirPods are created for every phone created. Im sure there's a pretty large percentage of people that don't even use the AirPods and year after year improperly dispose of them. It is not always about money. Apple works harder than most to reduce their damage to the planet.
