I think this is not only a smart move from multiple perspectives it's also something all the other phone makers will transition to within a year. The EU is also asking manufacturers to cut back on 'e-materials' and the drawer full of unused EarPods and chargers in my house speaks to that. The typical 'Apple is ripping us off' thing will be brought up, I already saw one post above. But I'm not sure that the charger and no 20 year old EarPods are really adding value to the $800 computer in your pocket.

In before they start selling iPhones without displays and you will have to pay a monthly sub to lease one.

Yep. My daughter does. She hates BT headphones.

They are also nice to have if your wireless loses power or “on the fritz”.
Tell your daughter to get on with the times. The writings are on the wall when Apple removed the 3.5mm headphone jack years ago. The lightning connector EarPod is only there to ease the transition towards wireless headphones.

Complaining about having to go wireless headphones is like complaining about the loss of CD drives in the past - people need to stop clinging onto outdated technology.

I wouldn’t even mind to have a plastic iPhone that’s more recyclable than metal and glass.

I don’t even think iPhones should come in boxes unless they’re being delivered. Just hand them out like cards at an Apple store for in person purchases. Include nothing, including paperwork

wireless have to be charged up and will run out of battery

I got my first iPhone this year so the lightning earbuds were nice to have. I had a power adapter from my iPad that works for it but now I have an extra to keep in the car. It’s not a waste for everyone, maybe make it optional

If you remove things, then lower the god damned price.
The problem is that depiste they would sell those things for around 60usd, it actually cost them like $3 so they rather keep the original price and increase their margin by $3 (+ the airpods you'll buy)

How is this reducing packaging and environmental waste if I have to order a power supply or headphones from someone else and they have to ship it to me in a separate box through a separate carrier as part of a separate transaction?

I'm so tired of this feel-good nonsense that doesn't actually have a net positive at all. In fact, it's a net negative. Well done Tim.
It reduces the packaging when thousands of current iPhone owners buy the new iPhone and skip the power supply purchase!

Regular 3.5 mm AirPods are something you can't really have enough of, like fingernail clippers. I'd love to have a pair lying around at this very moment to grab.

Lightning AirPods I think I probably used once. But that's because I use my laptop for most things and my phone for very little compared to the average person.

I'm not sure how much this will reduce pollution. I think it will probably drive people to buy more wireless headphones, which seem much more wasteful with the non-replaceable batteries. Plus it's another box and another shipment.

And it's not as if sound quality improvements in headphones merits frequent upgrading.
You mean earpods

While I see your point... the cost to include these cheap headphone is almost nothing for Apple. Same for the charger.

Who knows... maybe the cost to produce the A14 processor is just a tiny bit higher this year? Thus no change in the iPhone's retail price if headphones and charger are not included.

though I still see people on the trails where I mt bike with what looks like these earphones, all I can say is: FINALLY!
Used them with my 1st iPhone (3GS) but haven't in easily 5 years. They were uncomfortable and dealing with the tiny wires was just a mess ...

no one needs a 5w charging brick or EarPods. I'm glad Apple removed them so that they can spend some of the extra money saved in other areas of the product. people who think Apple is simply pocketing the extra money that was saved by not including these extra accessories are likely wrong.

So there'll be no price increase on the iPhone...?

Otherwise, yes, they're pocketing the money.

I’ve got plenty of 3.5mm ones, and a few adaptors to USB-C for them, so I guess I’ll undo the environmental savings and buy adaptors for this.
3 different ends for my devices. 3.5 for the MacBook, USB-C for the iPad Pro, and now Lightning for the iPhone (still on a 2016 SE). If they truly cared, we’d get a single port for all devices.

I’d buy AirPods if I could get more than 18-24 reliable months from them, and they could last a long haul flight.

It just works?

this, plus the cost for the 5G modem will be significantly higher ...

That is fine by me. I have Beats X, I have Apple In Ear Headphones With Mic, we have so many those earbuds lying around at the house that it is not necessary to buy more. Same with the charger - we either use iPad charger or Macbook charger (had to buy the cable separately though).

Anyone who thinks this is actually for environmental reasons is delusional.

About par for Apple folks.

Since this is all about the environment, I am sure Apple will allow you to add earpods and chargers for free when ordering it directly from them for those who need it
