On a big scale, most people don't need them so in that regards, there will be tons of savings so it actually makes sense.

How many iPhones you had in your lifetime so far? How many charging boxes do you have and how many headphones have you collected? Its not needed (especially the charging boxes).

You may be tired but there are people that aren't and its for good. We don't have sales numbers but do you really think that out of all those millions of iPhones sold EACH YEAR the majority need charging box or headphones? If you truly think the answer is yes then I agree with you - its tiring.

I feel that people are so 'stuck' in their own bubble that most fail to see the overall picture.

In fact, lets use your analogy here so YOU can understand why its positive change.
So, no charging box, no headphones => the iPhone box can probably be half the size now. Ok? So, half the size of a box filled Airplane => double the amount of iPhones shipped => less planes needed to transfer the same amount of iPhone => less emission and THIS is only from transportation point of view. The other savings from plastic etc. from the boxes and headphones is not even accounted here.

So, next time you say what you say PLEASE think about it twice and PLEASE consider the ALL implications. Small changes matter on a big scale.

How is this reducing packaging and environmental waste if I have to order a power supply or headphones from someone else and they have to ship it to me in a separate box through a separate carrier as part of a separate transaction?

I'm so tired of this feel-good nonsense that doesn't actually have a net positive at all. In fact, it's a net negative. Well done Tim.

it makes a lot of sense. obviously it costs extra then if you need that stuff.

I think the headphones are find to exclude. You can get equal or better quality for almost nothing anywhere. I think the charger is inexcusable really. I'm not buying this argument that people have a ton lying around. Some do, sure. But not everybody. But in a few years everyone will accept this as the norm and stop complaining. The same thing most did when they removed the headphone jack. I also think wireless charging helps the transition. Once you go that route it's hard to go back.

Tell your daughter to get on with the times. The writings are on the wall when Apple removed the 3.5mm headphone jack years ago. The lightning connector EarPod is only there to ease the transition towards wireless headphones.

Complaining about having to go wireless headphones is like complaining about the loss of CD drives in the past - people need to stop clinging onto outdated technology.

Perhaps you could be nicer with your Bluetooth evangelism and send @decypher44 a brand new AirPods Pro pair 🤩 to help their daughter “get on with the times“.

I wouldn’t even mind to have a plastic iPhone that’s more recyclable than metal and glass.

I don’t even think iPhones should come in boxes unless they’re being delivered. Just hand them out like cards at an Apple store for in person purchases. Include nothing, including paperwork
My first iPhone was the 3G and even though it was plastic it was a great device. Felt awesome in the hand too.

Anyone who thinks this is actually for environmental reasons is delusional.

About par for Apple folks.

Same goes for those who think it’s entirely about the money as well.

Of course there are cost savings to be had from this move, but there are other benefits to be had as well. In addition to cutting down on a huge amount of waste and pollution, Apple will also set the standard for many other phone OEMs to do the same (not ship charging bricks or wired headphones).

It’s also an excellent opportunity for Apple to rethink their product packaging. Personally, I quite like that slim box that a repaired / refurbished iPhone comes in. Pretty slim and sleek and I really have little use for the other accessories that come bundled with it.

Is it not possible that people have the opinion that there are environmental gains to be made here without folk like you calling them Tim Cook sock puppet accounts?
Dear Sir, one have to be naive to think that Apple are actually reinvesting the 2 and a half dollar spared in the phone.
The environmental argument is a joke, they just aim to sell more airpods (that are more harming to the environment with their non-replaceable batteries)

It says that EU law require manufacturers of phones that they add a device that can allow users heads not to be exposed to radio waves, that's interresting
Yep. Some places actually measure and publish emf radiation levels of devices.

I know some make fun of the environmental impact but with over 40 million phones sold each year it’s huge.

Apple can sell 40 million iPhones in a single quarter... and that's a low quarter. Launch quarters are closer to 80 million.

Over the last few years Apple has sold between 180 million and 200 million iPhones per year.

And yes... that's a lot of (mostly unused) EarPods... :p

You're seriously trying to convince us that you don't own a single USB charger? Not a single charger? Or is your story that you need to have one unique special charger for each device, and none of your devices can share chargers.

1) Not sir. You always go around assuming that everyone is male?
2) Like it or not, not including earpods as standard IS an environmental win. True they'll save money as well, but it's an absolute fact that if you don't make something than you're not contributing to damage to the environment.
3) Wired Earbuds are 10 a penny these days and very very few people need them now.

Dear Madam/non gendered/.../ (pick one), I'm just highlightning that they are probably not doing this for the environment in mind at first, but they want to look like they'll save the world
