My XR is a tad slower with iOS 14, but not much. Just increased hesitations. Facebook and their "Page" continues to be a pile of dung, and is worse under iOS 14, but I need it for my business.

Overall, iOS 14 is working well. Love some of the visual tweaks!

It doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t t send out notices about the update for quite some time as there are tens of millions of people updating each day in the first couple of weeks. They wouldn’t want everyone to update in the beginning.

nope, my wifes just auto updated along w/ her watch. 100% pushed auto update.

I’m probably not the only one who updated because the new Apple Watches require it.

Wish I hadn’t, but what are ya gonna do?

I'll install it after the next update fixes all the inevitable problems to an initial release.
Against all better judgment, I installed the iOS on day one and it's solid. Definitely fixed some minor UI issues I was having, and it also feels snappier in terms of how I use my phone. There was one small glitch, but I am definitely glad I upgraded.

I have an iPhone 7 with the same "user account" from my iPhone 3G, transferred, restored from backup, etc. so many times, FYI.

Auto updates doesn’t work on major OS versions, only .x updates

In one of the 13.x updates, all of the iPhones in my household were automatically changed to have auto update enabled. I didn't realize this until 14 came out, and I had a notice about 14 being available. I'm pretty sure the notice was something like, "the update has been downloaded, and your phone will update tonight." Which... is pretty "auto" if you ask me.

Very annoying that the auto updates on my phones were switched to enabled. And I think that would help explain the higher adoption.

How many people are using Android 11? Lmao

Can't find any numbers on Android 11 but 10months after the previous version (Android 10) released, a whopping 8.2% was on the latest version ;)

Probably a good percentage of the phones that it's been pushed out to. Most Android phones are cheap disposable phones or older units that are never going to see updates. That's why I don't buy those phones. It's part of the reason why I always choose the Pixel line.

Exactly what I was thinking. iWatch 6 requires iOS 14 on the device to pair, so you get a chunk of updates right here.

13 years have proven over and over and over (13 times) again that installing a .0 launch day version of iOS has ALWAYS been a bad idea. It's never finished software (i.e. still beta) and always has issues.

To be included in what amounts to be the stat of shame but somehow gets twisted into bragging rights, just goes to show that the  reality distortion field is still going strong

Perhaps for some, for many things are often just fine (even if there are some bugs here and there that for many don't really get in the way any more than bugs that are still there even on a .3 or .5 or .7 version).

I always found it a bit amusing that non-technical people would want to use a beta-test version of an operating system and whine 30 minutes after installing it that it wasn't perfect and ask how to revert.

I already downgraded my iPad to 13.7 due to insane battery drain. Will wait until 14.1 or 14.2 to install it.

Do not think so. Non-tech people just have auto update sure but the auto stuff never kicks in until two to three weeks after an update. My wife's iPhone for example, is never updated for the first couple of weeks after an update and she has auto update enabled.

i was the dumb one updated my iphone 7 plus. (now camera not working).
my 75 year old mom have autoupdate on her iphone 11 and it didn't kick in. So she's still running 13.7.

Given that the OS nags the **** out of you to update your device, this is a meaningless stat

Also auto updates, I bet some people didn’t even choose to install it

No nags yet. I think it only starts to nag you constantly after a month or more ... I held off forever updating to 13 and then 13.something and every time the phone woke up, I got the banner. Hopefully the new option to not download updates turns off the perma-nag for folks who don't want (or can't) update for whatever reason -- but of course, that runs contrary to Cupertino's mentality that they know best what you want or need.

I think we all will. It's not a high priority for Apple so don't expect a fix anytime soon.
Guess what?! My red badge went away!! I still have the automatic download toggle on but the one for automatically install is off. It didn’t download the update yet but the badge is gone for now!!!!

I’m guessing it may come back eventually and I’m afraid to go into the software update section because I know it will trigger it again but it must be timed to go away after awhile.

ah ha I lucked out and the downloaded the tvOS beta profile and now I will never have the badge!! There is hope!

In your opinion sure. Some people look forward to new functionality and enhanced features that a new version/update offers and somehow that is being twisted into bragging rights. All software always has issues, not acknowledging that is disingenuous.

There is no doubt that based on Apples release cycle, an IOS version is more polished toward the end of the it's life cycle, that doesn't mean the released version is not eminently usable.

There is a reality distortion field, but it may not apply to those who elect to download a .0 version.

iOS 14 might be beta-quality, but it’s NOT marketed as a beta. It’s promoted as a “final” release product that’s ready for end users.

I wasn't saying that it was but it certainly wasn't tested well.

I was just commenting that so many people were always eager to update, even though they weren't ready for the consequences--before public beta versions were available.

Right..
It's not like you have a whole lot of choice.
And let's not forget they stop signing older versions of iOS, so it's forced adoption.
Not entirely.

- There is a grace period for the roll-back to a previous release.
- A notification on the badge as the OP you quoted, does not mean it's a meaningless stat.
- There is no "forced adoption", you can set your phone up to update or not.
- An individual does have a choice especially after ios 13.6.
