It’s really frustrating that there isn’t an iPad version of this app. I would use it all the time on the larger screen in meetings and stuff. Typical.
No, the two languages are far too different for a beta product. Maybe after they release support for Japanese>English the technology will be capable enough.

Pretty sure those are screenshots by the MR team, Apple always use the time 9:41 (macOS,iOS) or 10:09 (watchOS)
The Spanish translations are absolutely abysmal. I don't know what crack they were smoking when they did Spanish.
I'm not sure why they released an app that is basically Google Translate but with weaker translations.

It uses a Google translator as the core functionality but acts as a notebook to save pages (when I work through my textbook) and comes with grammar references so I actually learn the fundamentals of what I'm writing. Spanish, as in Mexican Spanish or Spanish Spanish? I bet the app would not speak or write habéis…
There is also no Greek dictionary. Very frustrating. Although there is a Greek TTS voice.

有区别吗？The only difference is with characters, and the simplified set is the more universal of the two.
AI translations will always be limited and rudimentary. There is no way such algorithms can account for the myriad variations and complexity of human language.

Let me re-phrase.
Why pick one over the other to start with, instead of launching both?
It shows Apple's bias in favor of one over the other.
I appreciate the cat examples. This will be very useful for all the times I see cats while travelling internationally.
A number of comments highlight the poor quality of the translations in the screenshots shown in the article. Maybe it is a reflection of the value Apple places on knowing or learning a second language. Why do I think so? Because of the comparison its CEO made on a trip to France in fall 2017: “If I were a French student and I were 10 years old, I think it would be more important for me to learn coding than English. I'm not telling people not to learn English in some form — but I think you understand what I am saying is that this is a language that you can [use to] express yourself to 7 billion people in the world...” .

It's a fair point that I wouldn't have said it that way if I was speaking Spanish, but Google can still translate it properly without randomly adding the have in there, and I think most English speakers would probably say it that way. That said, I'm going to swap out the screenshots for this...

The languages most spoken are supported, that’s how you pick. Greek is definitely not one of them.
As someone who worked in software development for multi-language software, if you don't have Madrid's Spanish and Latin American Spanish, at least, you aren't handling much.
We struggled to find words common between us for our applications. Our first customer was from Chile, but we had a few Puerto Ricans, a Cuban, a Honduran, and Venezuelans, plus me.
Portuguese is split, as well, plus two written forms of Chinese, plus multiple dialects.
Google's app is finally decent.
Amazing! Now let's get it on iPad OS so that educators can use it to assist in teaching.
That seems like a flawed thought process. Every programming language is based in the English language. So if you wanna learn coding, learning English (to some extent) first would definitely be more beneficial.
