What is the name of this new app? Translate? Is is “built-in” or do I have to download it? Found something in the App Store, tried it on the iPad, and it looks like it is only in vertical mode. What? When you write this kind of story, tell people where to go to get it, how to get it and what devices it works on. Poorly written.

It's possible it's not available on iPad. I'm not sure...
BUT, it's clearly visible on the iPhone after you upgrade to 14.

It took me 24 hour to figure out the unintuitive design of this app. I must be getting old.
You’re not alone. Simplistically unintuitive. That’s what it is.

Really? I opened the app, played with it for 10 seconds, pushed the two languages I wanted, pushed the button, said something and waited for the translation. Then you can push the speak button.

I found it highly intuitive. To be honest there is nothing to it at all. I find it difficult to understand how you could not get it to work... unless this is your first time using any type of translation software/app. But even then...

Oh, the other thing... It's really good. Far better than Google Translate for the language I was testing it on. How do I know? The missus verified it. She was impressed by how accurate it was. The only problem so far is slang. No good with slang... so far.

Speed of learning is not in the design language. What makes the engineers' happy is that you DID figure it out without calling for support or needing to read a ten page document.

Does anyone know how I can get this app back on my iPhone?
I took iOS14 and accidentally deleted it (not just sent it to app library).
I can't seem to find it in the App Store.

It's on the App Store. You can either do a search for "translate Apple" and it should be 4 or 5 down the list or so
OR
search for Apple. Then click on an apple app then click on the name "apple" under the name of the app. It will then show you all Apple's apps.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not speaking to my translation app, I type into it to look for everyday simple words and phrases while on the go - in the bus, train, walking - 99% of the time. Try that compared to Google Translate. I live in foreign country, so talk about using a translation app for the first time. Nonsense!

You're not the only person living in a foreign country, maaaaaate. So you want to type it? Okay, here you go -- You type the word in, press go and it translates it! If you're on the train, bus etc., you can throw headphones on and listen to the translation as well! I really don't understand your issue here. The app is dead easy to use.

I see it now. Thanks!

What does this mean? You do not wish to talk out loud on a train? Completely understandable. This is what it takes to translate on the app from English to Spanish on my iPhone.
  1. Tap Translate App
  2. Tap Enter Text ( just above and to the left of microphone )
  3. I type: "Monkey"
  4. Tap Go
  5. Scroll up just a bit for Spanish Translation: Mono
All of this can be done off network as well.
Tap one of the language buttons at the top, scroll down and tap the arrow to download a language for offline use.

I live in foreign country, so talk about using a translation app for the first time. Nonsense!
Not sure how to respond to that.
Pretty much every county you are NOT living in is a foreign country. How can you live in a foreign country? I mean, the country you are currently living in is not foreign, it is home.

EDIT:
Thank you for the thumbs down! You should be able to handle GUI for the translate app with no issues.

Wow. The interaction design for this app is surprisingly bad. Very junior designer work here. There’s a surprisingly long learning curve for simple tasks — and then after you figure it out, there’s still a lot of tapping required to do the simplest things. I was really hoping this app would have a lot less friction to it. :/

Are we talking about the same app? Long learning curve? There is nothing to learn... It's a bare bones translation app. You type or speak what you want translated and it translates it to the language you choose.

That's it. There is nothing more to it. As to the design. Yeah, agree, it's very simple. But it works fine. I'll sure they'll refine it and update it as it goes along.

I wonder. I'm using it on an XS Max. Perhaps it functions different on smaller screens? Because I simply can't believe we are talking about the same app.

EDIT: The app functions differently in Portrait and Landscape mode. Landscape mode is only for speech and is for conversations whereas portrait can input using both text and speech. Again, this is pretty simple and very easy to understand. mmm... odd.

Specify 'bad'. What part are you finding difficult to understand?

Very junior designer work here.
Please clarify. Vague statements are useless.

This post seems like a very generic bot post. A lot of vague 'this app' references with no specifics.

So far not too bad, with English – German – French. DeepL seems better though. But with its good usability (esp. for spoken word) it’s quite a nice and useful app. Does anybody know which engine/database they are using? Or is it something new of their own?

Sorry, to revive an old thread, but where can I find the Apple translator app? It’s not an app that’s on my iPhone and I’m using iOS 14. And it’s not in the App Store. Any advice is appreciated.

see my post above... #110 it should be. (iphone only, not ipad)

So THIS is what Apple comes out with to compete with Google Translate?? ELEVEN whole languages! Wow. Total Mickey Mouse POS. What a joke.

I'm afraid the answer may be obvious, but I've never been able to get the app to work. 100% of the time, I get "Translation Unavailable, Translation is unavailable at the moment. Try again at a later time." Help? (¿Ayúdeme?)

Did you find a solution?
